Talk to me about the scouting department

There weren't a whole lot of changes in the scouting department from last year to this year that I know of. My general read is that we're a little less experienced in that area than some other teams but they're hoping to change that.

The things that I do know of:

- The team promoted BLESTO scout Lee McNeil to Pro Scout
- They also parted ways with Pro Personnel Director Matt Allen
- Jeff Morrow previously changed titles from Director of Player Personnel to Senior Personnel Executive and is still on board with that title

Allen and Morrow are the most interesting stories.

Morrow's title change was basically something of a demotion. He used to run the college scouting department but now that's under Cole Spencer. It's a similar move to what Dave Gettleman did when he was preparing to retire (before getting the Panthers GM job). Morrow may also be looking to retire...or may have just lost some favor within the organization.

As far as Allen, although he was Jerry Richardson's grandson, the general take was that he legitimately earned his job and was well thought of within the team offices. The sudden news of his departure was kind of a surprise. If any more information has come to light about that, I haven't seen it.

Word is they'll look for Allen's replacement sometime later in the offseason, probably after the draft. I wouldn't be too surprised to see other changes happen then too. That's generally the season for it.

FYI: If you want to know more about the scouting department, your best option is to look up the Panthers media guide (pretty easily found online). It'll be last year's information, but the team doesn't list scout bios on their website so that's generally the best you can get.

As long as Rhule has final say does it really matter?

I don't know that Rhule holds a lot of sway in the personnel department right now outside of him being old friends with Pat Stewart.

He gave Evan Cooper some goofball title having to do with personnel evaluation but I'm not sure he has any actual influence on scouting.

I think he does. I've seen nothing that indicates he doesn't have final say.

Wait until Pickett is a Panther.

He has final say over the roster, but I've never seen it firmly established that he has hiring and firing power in the personnel department.

That's my point. As long as he has final say over the roster I don't think the scouting department really matters all that much. Dumbass gonna dumbass.

    • I see Bryce's development this way: He improved when his supporting cast improved.  TMac and Dowdle saved his arse last year, but in fairness, most good QBs have good WRs and good RBs--and good OLs.   The 2025 OL underperformed, actually. They were above average, but they should have been elite if you consider the salary cap.   As soon as we signed Lewis and Hunt, I started thinking, "That's not sustainable.  With Ickey about to get paid a LT salary, Moton and Hunt grabbling $50m per season combined, and Lewis around $17m--that would be nearly $100m and the Center just walked.  Yikes.  What does that mean?  Rico walks, Mays walks, and we do not have a top 5 WR on a second contract.  We do not have an elite TE, and only 1 is on a modest second contract. And now Bryce will demand $50m for his incremental rise to mediocrity?   So when we sign Bryce, we will get weaker at other positions.  Hunt, Moton, maybe Ickey and Lewis, will all be casualties--that is the right move regardless (not sure yet about Ickey, but he was not elite) Bryce is one lucky, entitled camper.  No competition since being drafted, and he lost his job for a while to the aging clipboard holder.  Now we are bringing in UDFAs and busts to compete with him.
    • Probably not.  If we are taking a QB, it would be a prospect to replace Bryce and not a flyer type player.  I can't say for sure, but I doubt he would have cracked the top 3-4 QBs even if he were to play this coming season.
    • The Giants, Cardinals  and Dolphins should have moved on, but they didn't and ended up cutting their QB early into a monster second contract and had to eat a TON of dead cap money.
