Cut Darnold... Sign Vet QB to be a Mentor... Start Corral from Day 1

I love Fitz, I really do. Great guy, cool guy, family guy but no.

I really don't get all of the QB mentor stuff anyway to be honest. Very few QBs mentor anyone. It's the QB coach's job to mentor QBs and maybe a little an OC or HC but not a QBs job. We have a well respected QB coach. Let him do his job and mentor him.

There is a difference in mentoring the player on the field itself and mentoring the player in the locker room and outside the facility.

The coach is there to do it on the field and in the film room, everywhere else, it's on the other players on the roster to show them the ropes.  It's just about how you handle yourself everyday as the starting QB of an NFL team, those aren't the things these kids learn from their coaches, it's their teammates.

For me personally. Unless you have Mahomes, Allen, Herbert, or one of the other elite QB’s then you take Young or Stroud and let them battle it out with Corral.

It’s not like we invested a ton of draft capital in Corral so if he happens to flash a little bit and then you end up with a chance to draft Young or Stroud then you do it.

One way or another you just created a great trade piece.

I also think mentorship at the NFL level is way over exaggerated. These guys need to know how to be adults and take care of their finances, something that their inner circle will help them with. Football wise, the coaching staff is paid to get them ready.

Maybe Cam could be that for Corrall. It would be nice. I just wish we didn't have Sammy and that contract. It just really fugs stuff up for us. 

I absolutely LOVE Cam, was all about him coming back last year, and up until last night, I was very on board with bringing him back this year.

But now that we drafted Corral, I no longer want it.  Love the guy, he's a Panther legend and will always be so to me, but we need someone to teach Corral how to handle the mental side of being an NFL QB, particularly off the field... that's not Cam lol.

I don't value the idea of a mentor enough to devote 18 million plus to it

If we're in the position to draft them, that means we gave up about the 65th pick in the draft next year for Corral, that absolutely is a decent investment in him.

And in reality, it would mean we gave up this year's 2nd and 4th, next year's 3rd, and next year's 1st (and possibly more if we needed to trade up) to solve the QB position.  

I'm all about solving the position, but without all the other picks, we're not able to properly build around them.

In the end what it comes down to for me is that we're not winning the SB this year, we'll be lucky to just contend for the playoffs under the best case scenario.  So I have one and only one goal for this season right now, and that's to find out if Corral can be our QB of the future, until we figure that out, we're in QB purgatory.

But that's not devoting 18 million to it, it would be 3-4 million for the backup to replace Darnold.

That 18 million is gone no matter what choice we have... it then comes down to is it worth an additional 3-4 million to get a better mentor for Carrol, I strongly think it is.

well the QB room does need to change when you draft a young QB. 

you need a Derek Anderson type.  Someone who has seen the highs and lows and everything inbetween both on and off the field.   You need more than a coaching staff IMO.  

Sam and PJ are just trying to make it.   No real difference to Corral.  They just been at it longer and we know the answers on them already.

I’m gonna be honest, I’ve had a couple drinks but I don’t follow your math at all… we gave up a third and fourth for Corral. If we have a chance to draft Young or Stroud next year then you do it and flip Corral for a fourth or something similar… or hell let them battle it out and flip whichever one loses out. So all in all you lose a third round pick (the one traded to New England) but you found your franchise QB.
 

Corral very well could be a franchise QB but why kill him early trying to find out…. I’d say we aren’t particularly a well run organization but we don’t need to be taking pages out of the Jets playbook.

You can consider it whatever you want. They don't give the cap space back.

And that's too much cap space to devote to something like that.

    • Then again, if you get into a situation where you need assisted living you're going to chew through a million way faster than you'd think. As long as you can live on your own you can make money go a long way living modestly but assisted living is out-fuging-rageous.
