Straight up legit competition? I’m still not sure Sam can actually beat PJ.

I don’t want the rookie to start week one and us ruin him.   But QB wise I fully expect he can make more plays than Sam by mid season.   Game speed will take awhile.   And he will make mistakes.  Probably on par with Sam in that department.  But I think he has instant offensive upside compared to Sam.

Alright your opinion and basis is showing  .

Sam's a bad QB mentally but physical abilities a different story.. And no QB in this draft is going to have a heads up on the mental stuff based on just the transition from college to pros.. So if Matt beats him out it means he got the mental game faster then expected and physical can match a top 3 prospect talent..

Win win in my book..

But their still needs to be a competition and by all reports I've heard.. I don't have a doubt it will be a fair 1..

I do think he's physically talented and think he deserves a shot to compete for the starting job

See, this is the problem, because yes, Darnold is absolutely physically talented, extremely so, actually.

So in camp with a better line in front of him and knowing the defense can't hit him, he's going to look like a stud out there, but come regular season games, he doesn't process things fast enough, he just doesn't have the mental side of it and makes mistakes.

That's why I don't want him around at all, because even if Corral plays, he's going to have the pressure on him after every little mistake because he'll have a physically talented Darnold behind him and making good plays in practice.

I think having Darnold over Corral's shoulder, will be a hinderance to him, and that's why I'd rather just cut him and bring in a cheap vet to help mentor Corral this year.

Are you going to call his detractors racist?

Since you want to open this can and attack someone else with it. If Sam Darnold looked and carried himself like Cam Newton you would not be this forgiving of his horrible performance and you know it. Cut the sh*t.

You have lost me on a tangent here.

I have very few problems with Cam Newtons actions. A few times he had Ill advised timing on celebrating and lost at least one game for us due to celebrating so that's a valid criticism.

But the racist thing had nothing to do with Sam and was about Matt.

The conversation initiated over the celebrations. Why even bring it up with Matt? If our starter is the worst in the league in back to back seasons criticism will be warranted regardless. Sam is getting a pass from some people despite data showing no other QB has been worse in the last several years and it is either because they are delusional or they have bias.

Yes his performance was less than ideal but I don't think anyone would have done much better last year.

I also wanted Strong. I would have loved a 3 way competition.

I don't cate who starts as long as they legitimately earn the job.

I mean, it’s my opinion lol.   So yeah, my opinion is showing.

I didn’t trash Sam’s physical tools.  There isn’t a post of mine that has ever done that.

And I only said by mid season I thought Matt could offer upside offensively vs Sam.  Because Matt is a better pure QB coming out and a gamer. Yet still acknowledged Matt would probably bring a comparable number of negative plays because of the jump up.

it’s a pretty tame statement IMO

Sam’s always been an athlete that played QB.  He stinks at QB though.  The mental aspect and understanding.  Lot of kids straight out of college have edges on aspects of Sam’s flawed QB game.    And not just the Herbert’s of the world.  Mills and QBs drafted further down do.  Sam is just physical tools.  Not much else.

What’s my bias? That I believe Sam is and has been the worst QB in the NFL over the last 4 seasons? That he isn’t good?   That he has been given more opportunity than comparable QBs and the experiment should be over? That rookies have even proven to grasp things better than him?  Well, I guess I can handle that bias.

Yes, plenty of people could of done better than Sam.  We’re they on our roster? Maybe not.

I hear what your saying but I think it will be an actual open competition. Fitt came from Seattle with Wilson, so he has seen what happens when you open it up.

That said I think the tie goes to Sam. If at the end of camp Sam and Corral look equal I think they roll with Sam. That said the leash would be VERY short.

I have no doubt this is a open Competition and Sam will probably win it.. But best of both worlds is Corral sits and when Sam fails he has the proper time to prove if he is or if he isn't a starting QB..

Yeah I think the leash is short. Even if Sam is playing well but we fall behind in the playoff push I can see them throwing Corral out there to finish the season - to see what we have.

Honestly if I were to bet on it, I see Sam starting the season and Corral finishing it.

We all have to be hopeful for Sam now.  Its possible Corral just dominates in camp, but at this point, it looks like Sam starts day 1.

I absolutely LOVE Cam, was all about him coming back last year, and up until last night, I was very on board with bringing him back this year.

But now that we drafted Corral, I no longer want it.  Love the guy, he's a Panther legend and will always be so to me, but we need someone to teach Corral how to handle the mental side of being an NFL QB, particularly off the field... that's not Cam lol.

What the fug is this?

    • Give me Mitchell Evans over T Sanders in this run heavy offense any day of the week.
    • What's up gents, the OGs remember me, the guy who single-handedly gave the Panthers the greatest uniform in history moniker. Not too long after that I got involved with Pro Football Focus (pre-Collinsworth acquisition) and ended up taking backseat here to preserve some objectivity. But from a distance I noticed a lot. After the end of the Cam era this place devolved into the most un-fun, petty, negative cesspool of whining and bitching that has ever graced the internet. The worst part of it all is that the level of discussion turned into the most ill-informed, hot-take, unnuanced crap, rife with people talking out of their posteriors as if they have any clue about what they are watching. Once you get into the professional side of the sport and actual film rooms, you start to understand there's an absurd number of moving parts to pretty much every snap and the details you are privy to are truly only half the picture. The absolute most important thing I learned from being part of professional level football analysis is that quarterbacking is literally the most intricate and difficult position in all of professional sports, and that the NFL itself is struggling to develop any workable model that allows them to understand what makes one succeed vs what makes one fail. Because of this paradox it has also made the quarterback position itself grossly overvalued from a fan and media standpoint, creating an absurd fixation on the results delivered by a single player who has to rely on the contributions of everyone around them. This also drives the dreaded inflation of QB salaries that inevitably cause even elite teams to lose key talent all to pour cash into the one player supposed to be able to single-handedly elevate the entire team (and defense and special teams and coaching and ownership by some mysterious proxy), yet without those same players even talented teams can wander the wilderness searching for the right guy to take advantage of their talent window. The discussions the last few years around Bryce has personified this insanity, as this board has devolved into some sort of electronic civil war between the hyperbolic Young supporters and the vitriolic Bryce haters. The reality, like practically everything in this world, is somewhere in the middle. He has traits that can absolutely elevate a team with creativity, play recognition, off-arm angle throws, mental toughness, etc. He's also physically limited, with mostly "good-enough" qualities for most situations that a professional quarterback is asked to do, and will never be an overpowering physical force like pre-injury Cam. But "good-enough" physicality represents a large majority of championship-winning quarterbacks, even in the modern era. There's a reason the corpse of Peyton Manning took the chip from elite physical specimen Cam, because the team surrounding him was talented enough to get him there, while we all know Cam was the driving force of that 2015 team. That's no knock on him, that's just how the game of football tends to work: the more complete team usually wins. The summary is this: if this team lives or dies solely on the performance of its quarterback, then it is absolutely a paper tiger even if he plays brilliantly week in and out. There are no superheroes in this sport, there are only conduits that proxy the collective efforts of much of the team around them. And no one alive can tell you how the position is played perfectly, it's all a confluence of circumstance and what unique collection of traits each player brings to the position, which can never be truly recreated season after season, even for the same player on the same team. If this place remains a raging hellscape of idiotic hot takes I will happily remove myself again and do something more productive for yet another decade, but maybe's there hope that we can all get back to the old adage, and keep pounding.
