My Thoughts on the 2022 Draft (Matthias Rant)

I see a lot of jubilation going on in this forum.  I feel like I got to be the one now to bring this thing back down to reality.  Haha!  I feel like I got to be Denzel Washington up in this bih!

Now with that said, I'm not going to totally crap on our draft because overall, I love the first pick.  We had all three of our top tackle choices available, which no one could have imagined.  We took the guy that was the most touted.  Considering we want to be a majority rush team, he was the best of the three.  Ekwonu may go on to be Hall of Fame worthy.  I'm so glad we didn't do the stupid thing and pick a QB at that spot.  With all the "experts" mocking Pickett and Willis to us at 6, it had me sweating bullets.  Yet cooler heads prevailed there.  Other picks I liked include Cade Mays, and possibly Brandon Smith.  The other guys I'm kind of meh on.  Which brings me to the guy everyone is all the rage about. Matt "Mother Trucking" Corral!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Panthers' Scott Fitterer, Matt Rhule present for Matt Corral's pro day

Listen, there's nothing wrong with being excited to see what cats will do and having positive expectations.  However, y'all are going over the top with it.  Can we please temper (or Tepper) our expectations?  Now for personal feelings about this dude, and really about this QB class, I wouldn't bet my future on him.  I'm a patient gun.  I was fully reserved in getting our franchise guy in the following draft with cats like Anthony Richardson and Will Levis showing up.  Yet you know, our sorry coaching staff said they wanted to draft a QB, and that is what it is.  I wasn't against it, but I hate they traded up for one, especially a freaking third!  These guys were falling off the edge of a cliff. (I think Howell went in the early 4th round)  So of course as we saw, we picked Corral.  Now I'm looking at this dude, and I see nothing special, at all.  Nothing from his highlights screamed to me, "Oh, this guy is going to light things up!"  This guy will have to add weight to his frame (fat, and not necessarily muscle), he will have to learn how to adjust to a pro level scheme, and just everything about him screams he's not going to be a decent guy anytime soon.

I'm honestly wondering why the hype?  What are folks seeing from his highlights and games, that says he can be a franchise guy?  People say he got a quick release.  Meh.  I'm not giddy about his sidewinding pitches.  Especially at his height.  Fools will be knocking his stuff down at the line like swatting flies.  When people say "Quick release" "Quick release", I'm thinking is this guy Dan Marino?  Nope!   I don't see what the buzz is about.  The truth of the matter is, Corral will not be ready to play this year.  If Darnold absolutely sucks, expect the Panthers to have a bad year, putting us back in the top ten.  If/when that happens, whatever coaching staff or front office we have at that time, we sure as heck better not say to ourselves, "We'll get Matt Corral some help".  Boy, I'm going to freaking explode if we pass on the top QBs next year in favor of sticking it out and developing Corral!  I'm flipping off every mother trucker who try to make an argument for dude in that day, you non delaying gratification bastards!😆

I will say about this year, it's hard to see us having a bad season with the upgrades we made on the O-line and adding D'onta Foreman to the mix.  Darnold will have to really suck all over the field for us to get another top 10 or even top 5 pick.  If we do end up missing the playoffs and have a mid 1st next year, I would trade that and a couple of more 1sts for a guy like Anthony Richardson.  That's just me.  I wouldn't waste any time playing around with Matt Corral, and that's certainly the case if we are top 5.

Thirds can easily be recouped. Sometimes you get several thirds with compensatory picks.

Basically, when you're in our position, you have to take swings. Corral has the arm talent and mobility to be an exceptional QB. The real question is whether playing in Kiffin's system has somehow obscured obstacles that will impede Corral from being successful, and, within that same vein from a fan's perspectives, whether Kiffin's system has somehow done a Jedi mind trick on some fairly experienced football guys (especially the OC). I don't think so. Corral's talent justified a higher pick from my perspective. If that talent is realized, then a third is a small price to pay. You have to take the swing. It's a good gamble.

I really haven't seen where anyone is christening Corral our franchise QB.  You're countering very limited overreactions to him being selected.  Most of what I see are people hopeful given his traits but aware of his weaknesses, not banking on him being franchise saving.

I think we'd all love to see Stroud, Levis, Young, Richardson, etc. come next year if he doesn't jump out enough.

If we do have a bad year, the third will be like a late 2nd.  Every year guys fall to that spot.  I hate giving that up.  Of course I'm never confident we get lucky with compensatory picks.

Fitt has said in the past he will continue to bring in a new QB every year ideally.

No reason to think we won’t draft one almost every year (hopefully with later and later draft picks).

Would’ve been nice to have not given up any future pics, but nice to have 1, 2, 4 and 5 next year and yet still have addressed top two needs this year with guys some thought could both be first rounders.

I see many of us are hyping him up.  His talent, from what I've seen in his highlights, is not better than what we saw from guys like Will Grier.

OP Im sure you knew you were going to get crapped on for this post..

That said I dont disagree with your logic. Corral is and was not drafted to be the savior. I think people want him to be - because hes not Sam but chances are that he is not.

BUT when you dont have a franchise QB you HAVE to take shots. A 3rd round pick regardless of position is not guaranteed to be a starter. So its not wasting a pick on Corral. Its throwing the dice and taking chances. Its a worth while bet.

This is 100% accurate. Low risk, high reward.

    • Many Panthers fans are already excited about second-round selection Nic Scourton for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: the Panthers needed to recharge the position group, Scourton had a late first-round grade according to many (including the Panthers), and he fit this season's modus operandi of stopping the run now and forever. However, Scourton was seen early on as one of the top-3 EDGE guys in this class but fell due to not having quite the season at Texas A&M as he did prior at Purdue (his sophomore season). It's been revealed since then a few different things that speak to that dip in production... Texas A&M, for one, requires each player on their line to be able to hold two gaps. This also explains why we saw low production across the board from the other two TA&M prospects but were still being heavily touted. Scourton was also said to have bulked up to 280lbs in order to fulfill this role and noticeably suffered from it. He's expected to play this season with Carolina at 255 - 260 which is very different from most situations. In most situations, teams are wanting players to gain 15 - 30. Since Scourton is going to be playing at his Purdue weight, I thought it would make sense to dive more into that tape. Y'all... we might have gotten something special... Let's take a quick peek at the stats before we start drooling over some highlights. First, a summary of the last two seasons for Scourton: Second, the game splits: The first thing that pops up for me is how Scourton's sack numbers were cut in half his senior year. We've already pointed out issues with scheme that impacted the TA&M linemen from racking up numbers, but seeing the game splits it's clear that Scourton didn't exactly feast on inferior competition while at Purdue. He had two two-sack games (vs. Michigan (2023 - 2024 champs), Indiana) and a 10-tackle game (vs. Nebraska). I also see the 2024 games where he went up against two top-10 tackles (Will Campbell from LSU + Armand Membou from Missouri) that I watched leading up to the draft.  For those who just want a summary: Scourton looked elite at Purdue and is going to be rotating in often during his rookie campaign. I originally had him penciled in as the second-string, strong-side edge defender behind Clowney but I wouldn't be surprised to see the team have him and Pat Jones II moving around when they rotate in in order to find where Nic looks best. Here's a highlight reel to replace that Cialias you lost in your recliner tonight:   For those that like to use their own eyes: Below I'll be linking the linking the five games I've mentioned above. If you plan to watch all of them, I highly recommend going in the order listed as that will allow you to see him vs. Campbell and then Membou while dealing with the aforementioned things he dealt with at Texas A&M before seeing him look unstoppable in 2023 when he was allowed to play both at a comfortable weight and in a scheme that didn't require him two cover two gaps nearly every play. vs. Will Campbell (2024) vs. Armand Membou (2024) vs. Nebraska (2023) vs. Michigan (2023)   vs. Indiana (2023)
    • Yea, i honestly think he had almost as much say as Dan.  One of the main reasons I think that is Eager has said before he was ever with the Panthers, that you trade away picks for a qb and for any other position you do pick swaps, and that's exactly what we did.
    • For a LB that is a long career.  They take a beating.  Shoulders and head.  My favorite LB of All Time--Junior Seau--had a 20-year career--the average career for a STARTING MLB is 5.6 years.  I really think Shaq is done, but if he can play, it does not mean that he should.   Think about Morgan's career--7 seasons.  Luke's career--8 seasons.  Beason played only 93 games over 10 years--only 5 seasons where he played 15 games or more.  The other 5 seasons?  No more than 5 games per.  So basically, the average starting MLB plays 90 games in his career.  Shaq has played 123 games and was pretty injury free until the last 2 seasons (6 games total).
