Ranking the 5 Worst Defenses of 2022

The article does make a pretty good argument. Our offense will hinder our defense. We have elite talent and an elite play caller, but our offense is so inept it directly clashes into the productivity of the defense given the time of possession and where the opposing offenses drives start from. Hekker should help with some of that, but turnovers and field position must be improved.

Eh, not really. We were a top unit giving up yardage. It wasn’t the offenses fault that we gave up 2 TDs for every three times opponents got in the red zone. As the article said, we were only better than two teams at that.

On the flip side the defense also makes the offense one dimensional when they give up TDs so easily. Kind of like how in weeks 1-3, the offense got hot starts and allowed our D to pin their ears back against first time QBs and Winston without coaches. Week 4 started the crash and burn but wouldn’t you say Darnold did enough against Dallas leading us to 28 points? After that the entire team folded badly except against Colt McCoy.

You are saying the O stunk because of the defense? mmmK

After week 3, we were pro-rated to be within 5 total points of Jax for 30th. We had a hot start against 3 easy opponents. We weren’t a good D after that. The only other 2 really good D games were Colt McCoy and Atlanta, who sucked. We gave up 58 points to Miami and the Giants. Even Atlanta scored 29 against us in Atlanta. We scored 21 which was enough to win 10 of the 16 games (1 tie) they played. We scored 21 with Cam against WFT but the D couldn’t stop Heinecke and Gibson. Heinecke was almost flawless and we gave up 190 on the ground.

Our offense and defense both were bottom of the barrel. We had an aberration of 3 weeks but in the 2-12 run we looked like poo and it was an all around poo show.

By the  standard measurements of defense, we were 21st in points  allowed and 2nd in yards, so we're probably somewhere in the middle.    Those 3 games you refer to didn't allow 0 yards and 0 points to offset the other 14 games in the average.    Many other teams played those 3 teams as well, should we devalue their stats?

You ignore the offensive performance in the games you cited.  For example, we scored THREE points against the Giants.     For 10 of the Giants points they had to go less than 20 yards.  2 of the points the O gave away in a safety after the Giants turned over on downs  after goal line stand--4 downs on the 1.  The Giants couldn't get a yard.  The  O follows that up by  surrendering 2 points and giving the ball back without gaining a yard.

Take 5 mins watch the highlights on youtube: link

Put your avatar where your mouth is.  I bet you we are top half of the league in points AND yards this year.

The telling thing for me was against Minnesota, the one time Sam actually made a play all year and led that 99 yard drive to tie the game. The defense turned right back around and gave up a drive where the Vikings missed a FG that would have won the game and then the OT touchdown on the first possession. Thats when I knew they were trash. They had all the momentum on their side and couldn’t stop anyone. The only thing they were good at was stopping teams on the opening drive. After that they just got pushed around the rest of the game.

The NFL is an interesting game.  Last year, the Saints defense destroyed Green Bay.  The Panthers defense destroyed the Saints.

I am not sure the defense is a problem.

You must of missed the second saints panthers game. lol
