I do not see the Browns game as a huge benchmark of anything, unless it is a rout one way or another.  My reasoning has nothing to do with reps, Rhule's playing checkers on the chess board, the phase of the moon, or much of anything else that has been discussed here.

Increasingly over the years, the quality of play in the NFL is rough in September.  The first four weeks of the season are about like two boxers "feeling each other out" in the opening rounds.  There are teams that have been notoriously good in September and then flew south and became what everybody expected later.  Likewise, there have been teams that have struggled in September, then found their legs and charged on.

Our problem is that for the second consecutive year, we have three (or four if you count Arizona who has mailed it in against the Panthers since that infamous playoff game following the 2008 season) games that are easier potential wins than the bulk of our schedule.  It does not bode well if we don't collect those wins, but in terms of "style points," I don't expect a lot from us or anybody else, nor do they mean much at that stage of the season.

I see your point, but when discussing (whining about) the split of reps in preseason, there is some thought of “this player will not be prepared.”

Well, what would show that they were prepared and the repetitions in camp were appropriate? I don’t think you can use performance in November as proof that reps in preseason weren’t divided up well.

Maybe not have local and national writers saying Baker looks out of sync with the first team.  That would be a start

Are you saying that it has been reported that Baker looks out of sync with the offense? Or saying that if they has reported that.. then that’s gonna be an issue?

I know that Mondays practice had some tweets about his accuracy. However, it sounded like he moved the ball well against the patriots day 2 of practice and CO’s Ellis has been praising baker daily when he attends practice (outside of Monday)

The benchmark for that is units looking like they are in sync (no gaffes about assignments that leave people unblocked) and just how rusty they look.  Other than obvious screw-ups, if the OL picks up blitz assignments well (other than maybe the occasional delayed blitz), that is probably a decent indication.

I keep pointing at the OL because that is where repetition as a unit is most obvious.  But it can also be the back 7 on the defense.  For whatever reason, I read an account of the Rams adjustments on the field for the final play of their Super Bowl win against the Titans eons ago, and it makes one appreciate the reads and communications on the field (in that case, adjustments called by the MLB and S).  That stuff won't be perfect in September, but what we are looking for is groups that are familiar with what each other will do.

A lot of this does not appear in the highlights or stats.  It is underlying things that have to be seen by eye, and often after the fact.  In short, "are they ready as units?"  It does not quantify well.  So, the debate will likely continue unless they are very polished or just horrible.

I'm guessing this is for our "starting" slot WR spot not outside opposite DJ, although from what I've seen he is making a real push to start across from DJ over Robbie in 2 wideout sets. He's been really good this offseason.

DJ, Robbie, Shi, & Higgins is a solid core. A lot of others pushing for those last 2 (or 3) spots.

I mean, if you wanna use week one as a benchmark, then the game against the Vikings would have counted as the benchmark for the 2001 season.

Kinda didn't go so well after that, though 😕

I think you touched on some things that you can watch for to determine preparation.

Will BC work well with Ekwonu from LG? Will they handle stunts and handoffs well? If they give up sacks/TFL due to poor chemistry & communication, then I’d support those who say BC didn’t get enough reps with the first team at LG.

Will Baker have a good September being on the same page with the receivers? Will he throw a back shoulder when RA keeps running? Will their timing be in sync? The stats will show it, if so. If not, I’d support those who say Baker should have had more 1st team reps.

Until I see that, I’m believing we’ll be ready while others are not. I’ll admit if I was wrong. But if we start strong and look cohesive, those whining now will likely move on and find something else to whine about.

Yeah, that might be as good of a 4 deep at WR as we have had in a few seasons.

I don't anticipate the WR corps to be viewed as a reason for offensive struggles.

It's been talked about adnauseum over the years each time of the year around now that the first team offense and especially the offensive line needs reps together as much as possible to get the kinks out. Add in a new OC and a starting quarterback who has been here for only a few months and yes even a blind homer should be able to admit we shouldn't have wasted reps on Sam. If we look sluggish expect the folks acting like this is no big deal to disappear or act deaf dumb and blind about their past remarks.

As a benchmark for splitting repetitions in the preseason and how well that was handled. Not as a benchmark for the entire season.

Don't forget Elflein calling out blocking assignments. Having a competent center has a cascade effect on the entire line. Especially with as many new parts as ours.

We need to keep an eye on how cohesive that group is early in the season.

I don't use week one as much of a benchmark for anything, honestly.

But if you want to use it as a benchmark for how training camp went, that might be a bit of a risk. Most teams go into week one looking kind of sloppy on offense, especially given the training camp and practice rules that were imposed by the most recent CBA.

    • First, apologies @MHS831, I know you began this about tackles, and it was good. But... Frank, your post is just another Bryce sucks post. You obviously believe, like your buddy, that if we draft a WR it's all about evaluating Bryce Young or coddling Bryce Young. In short, it would be about improving the damned team. If anything, if Bryce is as destined to fail (or is already a failure right now... irredeemable), then another playmaker at WR would just seal the envelope and send him on his way. In my world, that's a good thing.  If some of you think that Bryce is a lame duck, then why wouldn't you want to set the offense up for the next QB to come in and be dropped into the offense to have success? Or, maybe you think it's all a moot point anyway because Tepper sucks, Dan Morgan sucks, Canales sucks, Ejiro sucks, Brandt Tilis sucks---everybidy sucks! If that's the case, then why does anyone care who or what we draft? Obviously some of you have all the answers and can run a gotdamn franchise better than the FO does now.
    • Yeah man, idk. I’m not super big on looking at the position group overall and damning the group. I’ll do the same with less words for WR. I think Proctor is the ultimate fit because he could be your future left or right tackle or left or right guard. Guys a starter, how much Zavala, Christensen, Curhan, and Corbett did we see last year again? Mauigoa will not be there when we pick, but you take him for the same reason you take Proctor minus maybe the LT. Freeling *could* be an upgrade at LT for the future. You don’t take Miller or Iheanahor because the position flexibility isn’t there, likely RT only guys. Those Utah guys are light in the ass, don’t want. Now I do WR. All extremely unproductive when compared to previous Round 1 WR. Tate- Gone Lemon- Complete player, not a burner, would take at 19 Tyson- Made of glass, Colorado washout  Cooper- Not the best hands. Like 300 of his yards were lucky ass stumble blooper looking poo. Bernard gives you similar but better in the 2nd. KC- Slaps then catches the ball. Lightning fast for about 20 yards. Good return man. poo QBs probably more to unlock. Would take at 19 if Proctor, Freeling, Lemon were gone. Washington guy- Lumbers, the smoothness Canales hyped for TMac, not there with him. We need a different style player.
    • Logically yes. Boston has the right balance though. Jalen Brown is #2 in the paint and their best shooters are 17th and 19th. While our best shooters are #1 and #2 and we have one player in the top 50 for points in the paint. And my understanding looking at the information I just referenced is we were basically at the exact same paint percentage last year in Charles Lee's offense. At the end of the day we either want to compete for a playoff series winner and the finals or we just want to stumble our way to another play in. We've already done that with James Borrego.
