What sort of offense are we running?

I seriously doubt that's true. I've seen Baker miss wide open receivers.

Both are true, honestly.

More than one analyst has pointed out that our receivers (Moore particularly) aren't getting open that well.

At the same time though, Mayfield has been missing some of the guys who do.

“The Ben McAdoo offense with the Giants was one of the more easily-adjusted to systems in the last decade once opposing defensive coordinators got film on it because it relied so heavily on 11 personnel (three wide receivers, one tight end, one back) and the slants/flats concept in the passing game,” Dan Schneier of CBS Sports and Big Blue Banter told The Riot Report. “If you had a WR who could win a one-on-one, it looked great — as we saw at times with Odell Beckham Jr. If you didn’t? Well, then it made the Jason Garrett Giants offense (ranked 31st in the NFL each of the past two seasons) look passable.”

We don't have a WR who can win one-on-one and idk if the thought was that Moore would be able to do it, but route running and separation have never been hallmarks of his game.

Granted, and one of the things you typically see in a Coryell for example is a fair amount of variance in formation, motion, etc.

So again, I'm not sure what McAdoo is McAdoing 😕

Not much insight from me, Scot but it looks like typical Panthers’ square peg-round hole stuff. Are we a WCO offense (which our skill players would excel) or a power running offense (which is what we’re still trying to do with McCaffrey running between the tackles)? Makes it hard to create an identity or define ourselves that way.

This ^ DJ’s game is more break tackles, YAC type receiving. Anderson is supposed to be our deep threat but he’s not strong enough to get past physical DBs to get open or fast enough to blow by anyone consistently. We have make that a priority next offseason.

It is no secret that no LB or safety can guard CMC in coverage and most corners can't guard him either.  I can't figure out why McAdoo cannot scheme plays that force a LB to cover CMC and previous inept OCs could at least do this.  Or is Mayfield too short and these are the passes that keep getting batted down?

Kind of the same thing we're running into on the other side with a DC who prefers man paired with a DB coach who favors zone.

You definitely get the impression they didn't take these things into account.

McAdoo was a coaching consultant with the Cowboys last season.  Maybe he's trying to incorporate some of Kellen Moore's "anti-system"?

It’s odd because winning one-on-one balls was a specialty of TMJ in college. We need to get him more involved.

This player is certainly triggering to some, but if we are this shitty passing the ball, we would be better off with Cam back there.

If you accept the premise that his arm is done, he still would improve our 3rd down and redzone effectiveness, and his running threat would probably open up receivers more.

Alright…well now I’m going to go cry and abuse substances. Have a great day.

    • It was both literally and figuratively a parade of horribles. 1)  Glut of coaching “talent” with designs that didn’t match the personnel and didn’t mesh with each other. 2) An o-line  I’ll-fitted for the scheme on the interior. Injuries compounded this critical weakness. Penetration on runs completely negated whatever zone dominance we tried to establish.  3) Lack of separation by the WR’s. A lack of speed and separation and filling the right roles led to some pretty embarrassing looks. We couldn’t win on multiple levels and it repeatedly trickled down. Also look to (2) because interior pass rush often limited the time for routes to develop. 4) Rookie qb with an average arm but degenerative mechanics. Those railing about arm strength are off. He can sling it with a solid base, and the time of release is plus. 5) as the season wore on, we saw more bailing on the pocket, more dancing, more tip toes . Which isn’t that weird given (1)-(3).    Finally, CJ had one of the best seasons ever for a rookie qb and we missed the pick. It has no bearing whatsoever on whether Bryce Young can be a successful NFL QB. I’ll say this: if the kid does rebound and proves himself, that’s the gamer you want leading your team.
