when our qb options sit on 11/7/22 are Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold and PJ Walker I can safely say not drafting Fields was a mistake, I dont need the rest of the season to make that declaration.

Not if he doesn't pan out. Drafting a QB in the top 10 that doesn't become a top 10 QB sets you back just as bad if not worse because you might miss the better QB in the next 3 drafts because you are trying to be supportive of your dud.

I remember being a little upset but not surprised when passed on Fields, definitely thought he was the best at the time just because in my mind he was a "baller". Then through last year I was relieved we did not draft him, fast forward to this season and now I'm wishing my team had him. Conclusion? Evaluating/drafting a QB is incredibly difficult and a QB's progression is NEVER linear, that applies to other positions too.

My "baller" award for the 2023 QB class? It's Bryce freaking Young and I've been singing CJ Stroud's praises all season. That's changed as the year has gone along.

yep people need to learn a lesson and admit they are wrong

But we as fans arent the evaluators. We can want who we want, it wont change a thing. I wanted Fields too but still dont matter. That 61 yard run didnt do a damn thing for the Panthers. So I dont know why its in the Panthers forum.

it’s not about the nfl

its about how wrong people here are about their QB evaluations

including the bears lmao

Nobody was wrong abt Fields. He's a guy who stood in the pocket and wanted to take deepshots but was an electric runner. He's upside and work ethic were reported by a lot of people, but he's been exactly what everyone thought he would be so far.

Surprise! When he started running he found more success, and nobody is surprised by that at all.  That doesn't take away his flaws. There's literally nothing to indicate he's matured as a passer yet -- and yes I know the bears supporting cast and coaching staff is abysmal but counterpoint so are ours lol -- but I'll happily eat crow if he does so. I rly liked Fields' arm talent coming out of college and I liked him more than Zach "Jake Locker" Wilson.

I really don't get why be mad abt Fields but it's not abt that u just wanna be smug and right when we all know evaluating QB success is impossible in the nfl.

I think it’s because a lot of the “he’s a bust” and “he’ll never succeed in the nfl” folks were total asses to folks who thought he was going to be fine.

mouthbreathers will say we need to draft will anderson and to wait for a qb to come out of college that throws for 800 yards every game with no interceptions

So basically, if you don't believe the QBs in this draft are worthy of a 1st round pick they are mouthbreathers?  What makes you the expert on QBs?

That's like saying we should have gone QB over Ickey in last years draft. Just because we need a QB doesn't mean you reach for one because there was a narrative 8 months ago that this QB class was better than last year. The tank crowd can't even decide on which QB is the #1 sure thing because they are all flawed

i mean normally i'd disagree but Will Anderson isn't a Chase Young/Myles Garett type prospect.

And sure, you can say that abt the QBs at the top of this draft but with our need for someone, literally anyone to throw the football competently and the fact that Will Anderson isn't that type of prospect.

Yea you roll with QB at the top of that draft. If you're wrong at QB its still the right pick.

You don't waste a top 5 pick on a QB that MIGHT be the answer.  You have to be 100% sure that he is going to be the answer.  We already have a QB that might be the answer on the roster.

Rhule kind of screwed us by not giving Corral Reps with the 1st string offense during camp, so now we are stuck with an unknown.

I'd rather take another position of need than to reach.  Stroud doesn't impress me.  He looked terrible against a team they should have blown out.  I know the wind was a factor, but he wasn't good at all.  IMO.

Young, is a very intriguing prospect but he also has major issue that he will face in the NFL.

It's going to come down to Fitterer and our staff as to whether any of them have a much greater upside than Corral.  If we pass on a QB in round 1 they may be able to wait until the early 2nd and still get a QB that has skills to play in the NFL.

I don't think it is a bad idea to trade down, get 2 first for our pick.  One in 23 and one in 24 and if Corral doesn't pan out, we can package those to picks to get a better QB prospect in 2024.

I, nor anyone here, is a professional scout and can say one way or the other how good a QB is in this draft. I have my opinion but that's just my opinion.   If we end up choosing a QB (Stroud, Young or any of these QBs) I will be onboard with that decision.  I just believe going into the 1st round with our only focus on a QB only is a mistake. We shouldn't draft one just because we need one when their skillset might not translate to the NFL.

We'll see.

    • Sometimes you get very valuable information from fantasy football sites. I found an analysis that you may want to read from The Fantasy Footballers. Perhaps you'll gain an insight as to why we moved up and got him. As always, here are a few snippets: "As expected, he dominated in the 2023 season. He averaged an impressive 2.03 Scrimmage Yards per Team Play, which ranks in the 86th percentile among all junior seasons since 2013." "Naturally, after initially playing behind two NFL-caliber running backs, Brooks’ career numbers do not jump off the page. However, his 2023 campaign gave us a glimpse of just how massive his upside could be at the next level. In fact, Brooks is one of only TWO running backs in this class to exceed 2.00 Scrimmage Yards per Team Play within their first three seasons in college."  "If you watch Jonathon Brooks’ film, you will find multiple plays in which he created yardage with his quick feet and lateral agility. He is elusive in open spaces and has an impressive ability to stack multiple cuts to avoid contact. Combined with his impressive burst and acceleration, Brooks can be a matchup nightmare in the second and third levels of the defense." "While Brooks is not the most physical running back, he does have a knack for absorbing contact and bouncing off defenders. You see this time and time again in his film." "He showcased a willingness to initiate contact with the pass rusher, the strength to maintain blocks, and the quickness to adjust to the defender’s moves. In addition, per PFF, Brooks was a top-three running back in the 2024 class in pass-blocking grade last season. He was also one of only two running backs in the class to average a 0% pass block pressure rate, highlighting just how effective he was as a blocker." "In short, Brooks has tremendous upside as a prospect. Even with his ACL injury, I would still be comfortable drafting him in the early second round of rookie drafts. In fact, I would not be shocked if he finished his career as the most productive running back in this class. However, we just need to temper our expectations for his rookie year as he slowly ramps up to full health." Marvin Elequin provides more here (including video clips): https://www.thefantasyfootballers.com/dynasty/2024-rookie-profile-rb-jonathon-brooks-fantasy-football/   Basically, Brooks has the potential to be a beast, and was well worth the 46th pick (and most mocks had him going mid second round anyway). He's not JAG. Someone had to make the move and take him, and we were the ones to do it. He's elusive, has good speed and acceleration, exceptional contact balance, and is an outstanding blocker. Just like any nice RB transitioning to the league, he will need to get used to taking what the defense gives him, while also showing discriminating patience, but he has demonstrated some ability on that front in college. Brooks' only real knock is the ACL. But ACLs aren't career ending anymore, or even skill ending as evidenced by Dalvin Cook, Todd Gurley and others. We'll just need to temper our expectations during his rookie campaign while he gets back to form. Once he does, we'll finally have the talented three-down back that has eluded us since Stew retired.

Took the Rams trade but stayed put at 52 and at the top of the 3rd.
