If you want a bridge guy, there are ample amounts of Teddy Bridgewater's, Jimmy G's, Jacoby Brissett's, Taylor Heinickie's, Geno Smith's, Tyrod Taylor's, Andy Dalton's, etc, etc that can fill that game managing veteran role for us. There is quite literally no reason to keep players that have time and time again, unquestionably proven that they are not NFL caliber players.

No matter what direction we go in this offseason, one part of it is going to have to be a decent veteran QB. Even if just as a backup.

There is a huge difference between 24 and 29, but what bothered me about Baker--in Cleveland, he had a good OL, good D, good rbs and good WRs.  He strived to be average.

With Darnold, I see the tools--his issue is between his ears--different coaches, systems, no OL, etc. everywhere he has been--so I get it, but you have to evaluate the situation as much as the individual player.  This is about the system of support and consistency.   Driving on the highway in good weather is not akin to having to off road in a monsoon. 

I get you--I really do--in deep down inside, I know the odds are against Darnold.  But I am an educator who has written books about people who are traumatized and what it takes to save them--you remove the trauma and provide a system of support--it takes time.  Maybe that is not effective in the NFL, but if the tools are there and the "demons and ghosts" are exorcised, maybe there is something there.  Not that we should leave Darnold as the only option, but your opinion of his driving is when he is late (behind), offroad (blitzed), and confused (lack of consistency and support).  For a 24 year old kid in a job that is characterized by vicious attacks and instant gratification expectations, age does matter in my opinion.  Just a perspective--I see your points and fear they are accurate.

The problem is there is basically no precedent for that kind of turnaround for a first round bust QB. There are dozens of failures of his type and I cannot recall a single one that ever rallied to have much more than a middling career.

I get trying to see that some people can be salvaged but that is also ignoring that, well.....most people can't be. It just is what it is.

Sam Darnold is about the clearest and most obvious example of this I can recall in recent memory.

The NFL is not a good learning place for somebody beyond their third or fourth year in the league.  By the time they get to year five, teams would much rather try and teach somebody in year one.  They are generally much cheaper and much less tainted by their previous experiences.

Steelers are improving I wouldn’t pencil that win in just yet

      It is.  Even the mid to late round guys are super appealing and would have been ahead of Trevin in his drafft.  Deontae Lawson - just look his stuff up, lot's to like Jimmy Rolder - absolute force.  Limited sample size but the sample is pretty dope.  (one of my favorite sleepers) Keyshaun Elliott - stud run defender, great size/length, is always wrapping plays up, high IQ.  Even this dude Owen Heinecke is an interesting guy.  Not some dog in the middle but will absolutely be an asset for particular teams (I.E. Minny would be an awesome fit)

      It's not explicitly saying it, it's suggesting that we draft a certain position, regardless if the receiver has the higher grade.  We would never had made the playoffs without T-mac. Morgan did the absolutely right thing, and that's what I hope he continues to do in the draft, which is follow the board and draft impact players. He used free agency to set up the draft for just that purpose. For anyone that thinks last season was anything but an improvement, I don't know what to tell 'em.  The goal is to keep the momentum going, and I'd say that addressing our three biggest needs with arguably the best players at their respective positions this free agency, and legit quality players to boot, goes along way toward building the foundation of long term success. Before free agency, no one was picking us to win the division, now more than a few analysts are, and that's before the draft. Pull your bootstraps up where you are and get to work. We aren't as good as we need to be, but the needle is moving in the right direction.

      The Bengals absolutely fuged up paying Higgins elite WR money. You can't have your QB and two WRs eating up your whole cap or you end up with... well, the Bengals. Your QB is getting killed because your OL is trash and you can't stop anybody because your D is trash because you can't afford a balanced roster. Unless you're smacking it out of the park in the draft you're gonna be hard pressed to put a good team on the field despite an elite QB and WRs.
