That's actually a more appropriate metaphor for what you're advocating.

I'm left with tangible proof of success in my scenario. Lombardis are forever. Who remembers that 2015 Panthers season besides Carolina fans? 15-1 and a SB appearance and yet it was all for naught.

There's a difference between intentionally going all in to win, and intentionally sabotaging a franchise.  Some posters here are implying he's sto working with the saints to fug us - seems crazy to me, and LPs quite doesn't imply that IMO.

Yeah, that's not what that means.

She's basically saying he would come in and get what he could out of it, future be damned.

And the notion that he could leave us in a worse place than we were when he got here isn't exactly farfetched.

Understood, I misunderstood LP's intent. I probably read it too fast.

Apologies @ladypanther

Thank you.  That is correct.  We would not be the 1st team to do that across all kinds of pro sports.  Looks like the Tams did it to themselves last year.  Tampa is going to be terrible next year.

Worked for LA and they will be in purgatory for awhile, but they did win the trophy. We are all used to mediocre but it would be bearable if we had won in 15.

A lot of truth to this. Mike Martz was an offensive wunderkind... until he wasn't.

Unfair to compare Payton to Martz IMO.  Payton found offensive success with several different moving parts.  Even the early 200s Giants teams he coordinated were solid on offense and he helped get the Giants to the Super Bowl with Kerry Collins.  Hell Winston still ain't good but Payton took a notorious turnover-machine who had an incredibly bad 4.4 INT% in his 2 years before New Orleans and in 2021 Payton had him looking pretty solid (1.4 INT%).  They went 5-2.  Also got the best out of Teddy too.

Martz scheme was so talent-dependent.  He tanked every offense he coached after that once the talent went away.  Asked far too much of the OL because every pass was a 7-step drop or had to wait for the play to develop downfield.  But they had Orlando Pace and three crazy good route-runners in Faulk, Bruce, and Holt (lord what a team) as well as a QB with a great release and elite accuracy.  His scheme also completely neglected the tight end position and that just wasn't going to fly as the years went on and went.

Maybe Payton suddenly isn't a good offensive mind anymore.  That would surprise me and really there is no reason to think that - this is a guy who was still winning game with Taysom Hill at QB.  But Martz was a whole different case.  He was a flash-in-the-pan who took advantage of supreme talent and the fact defenses weren't build to stop an offense that was sending 4 WRs out onto the field on 1st down.  Sean Payton has 15+ years of proven success.  Martz had like 5 with the greatest offensive talent we have ever seen and probably will never see again.

One thing about Payton is that alot of people like to call him a playoff choker, but if we're being completely honest, he should honestly have 2-3 rings.

The obvious one is against the Rams, that was a legit missed BS call and if that doesn't happen, I think the Saints put up more than 13 points against NE and win that second ring.

The other one is against the Vikings, the "Minneapolis miracle" as it was called. I'm not sure if they go and beat Philly after that, but if the miracle never happens, and they take care of business against Nick Foles, then I could again see them beating NE.

So while people may go "Haha playoff choker" they refuse to admit that, at the very least, Payton should have atleast 1 more ring, if not two.

Jimmy Johnson was a proven commodity when he went to the Dolphins too.

Likewise,, Gruden to the Raiders, Parcells to the Cowboys, etc.

Jimmy Johnson took over a team with 35 year old Dan Marino in a time where you couldn't make moves like you can now (or well, you could, but teams didn't because free agency was still in its infancy) and they made the playoffs 3 out of 4 years.

Gruden was out of coaching for 10 years.  And I think people forget that he was rightfully fired from Tampa Bay.

Parcells was out of coaching for 3 years and they made the playoffs 2 out of 4 seasons and finished with a winning record 3 times.

Also I didn't know this until I looked it up but apparently Marino and Jimmy HATED each other.  And they were still able to have some success.

Yeah, Saints have legitimately had terrible playoff luck.  I think they absolutely beat Philly, although the Eagles were magical that postseason.

Definitely should have beat the Rams

They also lost in OT in 2019 to the Vikings after never getting a chance to touch the ball.

Pretty sure Bucs fans are ok with it, seeing as how they have won the SB twice. Rams fans as well, as they too have seen their team go all the way. I think what you want is to be the Patriots. A dynasty. Well ... we don't have a Belichick, and don't have a Brady. I mean, Belichick came from the Browns and is 70. Just as much as you feel Sean would just jet, he could just as easily start a dynasty ... if we got the QB.

Kafka and Steichen could do it too, but they don't have the experience that Payton does. Sean is the better gamble to win now AND build a dynasty. Hell, Steichen and Kafka could be total busts as HC. We know Payton can go all the way ... because he has. The best thing ever would be to bring a Steichen or a Kafka INTO a dynasty ... but lol, we can't even get back to back winning seasons. Sean will at least do that.

    • Jake in his prime was a gutsy QB. But just like with even someone like Cam. Father time is undefeated. It's very unfortunate we have a guy who is only 24 years old that has an equivalent arm to that. Absolutely blows my mind that our brain trust lacked the basic common sense to value arm talent when making a massive trade with ramifications for years to come. Unforgivable incompetence.
    • Jake, to me, will always hold a special place in my heart.  I really feel like for his era, he deserved way more love than he got, and should’ve had more than his one Pro Bowl.  He was a gamer with an underrated rocket arm. but let me tell you, after his Tommy John surgery, when he came back, I can’t remember who it was against, but it think it was a division game, he threw a ball that was supposed to be a throw away, as I think he was under pressure, and that poo floated forever and died right at the boundary where a defender ran over and picked it off.  One of the worst throws I ever saw.  His arm just wasn’t the same after the injury and surgery.  All that to say, that’s what almost every Bryce throw to the sidelines looks like to me.
    • And again, when watching him in college he had one distinct trait that I feel makes a franchise QB - on those plays when everything breaks down around him, he creates one on his own.  He doesn’t rely on or need everyone else.  That play last night on the final drive where he was getting sacked and threw it to Diggs before his knee hit the ground?  He does similar things all the time.  Mahomes, Allen, Lamar, etc., they all do it.  It’s what made Cam so special. but we picked a guy that’s the opposite of that.  He desperately needs someone else to make a play for him because he can’t.  Even that play yesterday on 4th down to Horn.  That wasn’t a great pass.  The defender was late and came down to make a play in the ball and Bryce threw it high and outside where Horn had to leave his feet and really use strong hands to catch it.  We relied on a 5’9” rookie playing in his first pro game to make THAT catch at THAT time bc of the early turnovers and a not great throw.  Crazy.
