Article:

The Panthers were planning to interview former Saints head coach Sean Payton for the vacant position in Carolina. For now, that meeting is on hold.

Via Joe Person of TheAthletic.com, the interview has been postponed following the death of Charlotte FC soccer player Anton Walkes in a boating accident.

Owner David Tepper, his wife Nicole, and other teams officials returned to Charlotte from New York following the incident.

Payton has drawn interest from the Panthers, Broncos, Texans, and Cardinals.

This has to put us as a long shot to get Payton now. Seems like all the signs are pointing somewhere else.

I don't see how this impacts the Payton decision. They will reschedule and still interview him, just like the other 2 candidates we were meeting with this weekend. It's the human thing to do.

I agree, it's the appropriate thing to do, in light of the situation. I'm glad Tepper is doing it. I'm just saying it seems like the "Payton to Carolina" thing is losing steam, and it's only gonna lose more with this interview being delayed. Of course, things could change. No one knows how it'll go down.

Oh yeah, it's losing steam - but, assuming he doesn't accept a job over the weekend and works with us to reschedule - that bodes well for our chances.

    • I'm looking at the schedule and I see a 10+win season easy.  I think Carolina goes undefeated in the division.  I also believe that the Bears, Bengals, Lions, Browns, Steelers are very winnable.  Revenge game with phillips and the eagles could be a win.  Honestly only 2 games I see as chalking up a L to off the bat is the Seahawks and Broncos.
    • I guess so. Don't think I was involved with previous discussions.  Tepper is one of the newest owners in the NFL. Dan is going into his 3rd season as a GM - ever. Dave is going into his 3rd season as a HC - ever. Before becoming a HC, he was an OC/playcaller for one season total. Idzik is about to go into his 1st year as a play caller - ever. WRs are rookies, sophomores and 3rd year guys - though the experienced 3rd year guys are XL and Coker (who has missed a ton of games). TEs are guys going into their 2nd and 3rd seasons, and Tommy Tremble - though Sanders has missed a ton of games. QB has played 3 years. Chuba is an experienced RB, but Brooks and Etienne have taken very little snaps at the position. O-line is more experienced vets with some talent - which is HUGE. Need them to stay healthy. I mean the offense is very young in every aspect except O-line. You see it differently?
