Again no one says we shouldn't draft a qb but the question is whether Darnold at say 15 million is a better value for example than Carr at 30 mil. And whether he can start until a younger guy can take over.. Should be interesting what they decide with Carr on Monday after seeing and interviewing the draft class.

Neither of those options are a good value.

Reich needs to have a winning season given Wilks went 6-6 with a revolving door of qbs and didn't get to pick his players or coaches like Reich did. So the days of starting a rookie and going 4-13 aren't going to cut it. We need a qb who can win now and allow any rookie to develop over time as has been traditionally the case. Mahomes benefitted greatly from sitting a year and watching Alex Smith for example. What vet is a better value??

So what happens if we do end up re-signing Darnold? Hell, we’re already reportedly having preliminary talks with him which should already set off alarms for you. Is this new highly touted coaching staff with universal league-wide respect, just a bunch of blind delusional buffoons or what? That’s the problem with taking these arrogant hard-line positions on how “obvious” it is that a player is trash - it becomes pretty awkward when a respected non-Rhule coaching staff ends up signing him.

I would assume it would mean we simply couldn’t get a good option at a good price.  And therefore signed a bad option to be a pointless warm body.

Those people are wrong. If Darnold starts next year this team will not make the playoffs and Darnold will be the reason why. You can not win consistently with the way Wilks ran the offense last year.
You just can’t and that is the only way you can limit Darnold making mistakes.
He isn’t a QB you can rely on if the running game goes to pop.

We can pay a lot less for poor QB play than 15 mil. I don't really care about the money though, I care about winning.

Win now and Darnold should never be used in the same sentence. lol

It is one that has historically been used to compare qbs so it has legitimacy and long standing. You don't ignore it just because it doesn't fit your agenda.

Taysom Hill and Blaine Gabbert had the best QB ratings in the NFL last year

you generally won't find them or Sam Darnold listed and tracked on most sites because he and they didn't play enough.  And when you barely play, the results get skewed significantly vs the field.   So they exclude them from even showing because of that.

You don't ignore it.  You also can't take a number like that a face value.

David Newton has reported that the Panthers have already had "preliminary discussions" with Sam Darnold.

Define "Preliminary discussions".

What does that even mean?

Is it like "Say, Sam....You want to come back?"   Sam's like "Sure."  and that's that?

Or is it "Uh Sam...so if you want to come back, you'll have to be a backup or a Bridge QB 'cause we're drafting one."  Sam's like "uhh....." ????

I doubt he would even know that as well.

Chemistry doesn’t mean anything. He will still turnover the ball like crazy.

You're just continuously throwing a tantrum here at anyone even remotely suggesting he return.

Relax, man.

When all is said and done, two things will have happened :

1.) We sign a different Vet to backup whomever we draft

or

2.) We re-sign Sam to backup whomever we draft.

But here's the rub with #2 as there's no guarantee Sam would entertain being a backup at just age 25(going on 26) so the chances of him moving on are even higher right now.

    • He is a really good WR and they have a rookie QB so they can afford it. Look at what they have been wasting on Cousins for years? That's where this cap came from lol. Now the guaranteed money is high but Minny had to keep him while taking a shot on a rookie QB.
    • Johnson is very smart IMO. He will get paid either way but avoiding a terrible spot can save your career too. He looks to be working the system and good for him. I always thought hiring interviews go both ways and have been disappointed watching people not realize this. He handled DC roughly but it was also funny because he did see them as what they are which is a new ownership group, even with Petters, he would be likely be destined for failure there while they figure out the normal learning curve of the NFL.  It's not lying it's just 'your great but I can't say what your not because that is taboo'. Sometimes lies are expected if the truth isn't what they want.  I agree generally. Ron was doing great work as a DC where he put in 6 years as DC at 2 teams vs Canales 1 year as OC before becoming a HC. Ron is such a known quantity by now, he earned his 2nd shot as a HC and it went as expected given his proclivities. Offense is just safer in this NFL vs Defense so any one that can score will get a look. Ryans is a beast but how do you think he fairs without Slowick? Which HCs were in the SB? Offensive guys. It's a thing and makes laughing about TB, Atlanta and NO all having beatable defensive coaches the Panthers still can't beat LOL. It's a dump. If your building a career the Panthers are a long shot. If you are taking a shot, getting paid and/or ready to grow from this failure then this is a great option. I think the jobs are extremely valuable on many levels but there is always a turd in the punchbowl with Tepper. Hurney, Rhule, Friterer, now Caldwell and maybe Morgan. Tepper always leaves some dookie around to contaminate the next batch...they literally help him fug up the next time. It's Tepper's MO, spend lots of money and lean on past failures into new failures. There has not been a truly fresh start under Tepper yet which explains why he keeps failing.
    • yeah lol never say it can't get any worse with David Tepper in charge
