Stroud vs Michigan Tape (QB School)

Even in his “worst” game he was great, just that flip int was even partially his fault. Otherwise even if Young might be better at those scrambling schoolyard plays, he also can’t make those ridiculous throws you see Stroud make routinely. His throwing ability is just insane.

Agreed, I like Young a lot, but I think Stroud's throwing ability is on another level. I sort of like how he didnt run a ton in college but clearly can do it as needed, that shows to me another level he can reach in the league.

You're hoping.

JT even says he doesn't see Stroud demonstrating the playmaking ability you look for. He's shown he can do it, but it doesn't come naturally to him like it does Young.

There's some projection there for sure, but if he's that good of a thrower of the ball, I don't him to scramble around like Justin Fields and rush for 100 yards a game, the passing game looks effortless to him.

I think my biggest question mark with him is he seems laidback, which can be good, sort of worries me if he has that fire and drive. But the same stuff was said about Herbert coming out, so it might just be his personality.

Stroud is accurate no doubt. And has a touch I wished Cam had tried to develop because it ain’t always about the fastball.

However Stroud doesn’t seem to have top velocity but maybe that is just me not recognizing it on streaming video. You sometimes have to have that fastball. I’d love to have a passing artist to watch. Touch, accuracy, velocity/arm strength if you need it.

Are there measurements for his ball speed? Those NFL corners, fast.

Yes, anything in the mid to upper 50's/low 60s is above average to elite. Not that this is a very important stat teams look at, but to specifically answer your question.

I’ve seen him compared to Herbert with the style of play as well.

Yeah I think Stroud has a good enough arm. And that isn’t an insult. Sure it isn’t a Favre arm, but Strouds arm is such that you don’t have to worry about arm strength limiting things.

Once you have enough arm strength, I look more for touch and ball location. He has that too.

I only have two concerns, which can only be answered in the pros.

1. He absolutely won’t have the same clean pocket consistently in the NFL. (One thing I loved with Corral was the way he would handle free rushers with his mobility)

2. He won’t have a surrounding talent advantage every game.

That’s basically the “he went to Ohio St.” argument, but not how it’s normally used.

But being an Ohio St. quarterback doesn’t mean he will suck, it just means that it’s easier for guys who aren’t NFL caliber to look better than they are.

…I think Strouds ball placement makes him the exception to other OSU quarterbacks though, and I think he has a lot of potential.

Yeah, Id agree there, I think I would be more worried about the surrounding talent, and throwing to good receivers who are open if he wasnt placing the ball so well. Even if those guys are covered, the ball would still be where it needs to be.

I think the GA game showed alot in terms of handling a pass rush, that D-Line is filled with future NFL caliber players. I really feel like theres alot of similarities between both Stroud and Herbert's last college game, they showed off that they can move good enough, not Justin Fields/Murray speed, but good enough.

    • It was both literally and figuratively a parade of horribles. 1)  Glut of coaching “talent” with designs that didn’t match the personnel and didn’t mesh with each other. 2) An o-line  I’ll-fitted for the scheme on the interior. Injuries compounded this critical weakness. Penetration on runs completely negated whatever zone dominance we tried to establish.  3) Lack of separation by the WR’s. A lack of speed and separation and filling the right roles led to some pretty embarrassing looks. We couldn’t win on multiple levels and it repeatedly trickled down. Also look to (2) because interior pass rush often limited the time for routes to develop. 4) Rookie qb with an average arm but degenerative mechanics. Those railing about arm strength are off. He can sling it with a solid base, and the time of release is plus. 5) as the season wore on, we saw more bailing on the pocket, more dancing, more tip toes . Which isn’t that weird given (1)-(3).    Finally, CJ had one of the best seasons ever for a rookie qb and we missed the pick. It has no bearing whatsoever on whether Bryce Young can be a successful NFL QB. I’ll say this: if the kid does rebound and proves himself, that’s the gamer you want leading your team.
