Former Panthers QB: “No doubt in my mind” they pick Bryce Young

I like you but you are letting your fandom get the best of you with this Bryce Young infatuation. Now I know why you are so mad about the pro Stroud threads and wanting us to draft Levis for the laughs. Damn ya'll are taking dickriding to an extreme.

The post was in reply to Razor's request to name a good QB that was small and had nothing to do with Young. Razor didn't say the QB had to be in the modern era either and had just said name one like it hadn't ever happened before. He would have had a point if there never had been small players at QB before, but history shows there has been though it has been rare. And yeah, players have gotten bigger over the years, but that's true for people in general.

And I want Ahlers at 1 for the laughs but will settle for Richardson, Hooker, or Levis. Come to think about it, Bennett who is another smaller guy at 1 would work too.

name one good ohio state quarterback. i'll wait.

I don’t understand this argument. I’ve seen it a lot and I don’t understand how a college QB history as any meaningful effect on how good a guy is now.

Just off the top of my head, Joe Montanas went to Notre Dame therefore Jimmy Clausen should be awesome right? Right?

edit: I went to University of Miami so I hate OSU. No dick riding that school here.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to be cautious about hinging the hopes of your franchise and someone who will be touching the football more than anyone else when his most favorable comps are Wilson and Murray. But alas Stroud Richardson and yes Young are the only options in my eyes. Levis is Darnold. Do not want.

This is a bad argument, the better one would be "no QB's have come from X system".

How many great QB's has Purdue or Miami of Ohio produced?

I agree about being cautious with the pick. It's only possibly their jobs if they're wrong unlike fans. That's why they need to do all the research on the choices as they can and make the best educated guess they can on which one will succeed in the NFL.

I don't worry about size because one bad angle while being hit or even delivering a hit is all it takes for any player's career and possibly life to end. Being injury prone? Totally depends on luck and might not have anything to do with contact especially with guys tripping on turf.

What I'm concerned with is if a guy can face down the pressure/rush and not let it affect his decision making. Once he gets hit, does he shrug off the hit and go right back to making plays or does he let it make him frantic and take a while to calm down again? Can he scramble in the pocket and backfield to extend plays when things break down or does he force a pass or take off running or stand there and take a sack? Is the guy consistent? Can he make throws in tight windows?

On to Stroud, Richardson, Levis, and Young specifically.

Young's biggest issue is his size. Can he hold up to an NFL schedule for years? Personally, I think he can. But we won't find out until he actually plays in the NFL. As has been said a lot, if Young had Stroud's size, people would be saying he was the sure fire can't miss QB ala Manning, Luck, etc.

Stroud's biggest issue to me is how he plays when pressured/rushed. He stepped up against Georgia and played the best game of his career. But all season he reacted badly to pressure. Stroud just wasn't used to it since his Oline kept his jersey clean most games. He's not going to have an elite Oline here or on most teams to be honest. Carolina's Oline is a little above average at best right now. Hopefully that will continue to improve, but back to Stroud. Was the Georgia game the single best game of Stroud's life or was it him turning the corner and the start of something great? As with Young, we won't know until he actually plays in the NFL.

Richardson's biggest issues are consistency and if he can be molded into more than a physical specimen. By the end of last season Richardson was playing with guys that won't ever play beyond college and were probably lucky to be playing at all. Richardson did let his footwork get away from him at times even as he showed decent decision making as the season went. But his receivers didn't do him any favors. If Richardson lands in the right situation, he really could end up special.

Levis does give off strong Darnold vibes and I don't want him to be a Panther either. We've seen that show once and it wasn't good. I say pass on the remake.

Stroud is the “safer” pick for sure, I just have this vision of us passing on Young and he turns into a superstar by year three.

Young is mini Mahomes. Change my mind. If they pass on him they may regret it. His only flaw is his size.

I agree, Young has that magic.

I'm with you on pretty much everything here. But keep in mind that knock on Stroud relating to pressure will apply to any rookie we draft. I've been trying to tell folks to be cautiously optimistic about our oline. It remains a work in progress and depth is still a concern.

You obviously haven't kept your finger on the pulse of the Huddle, but that's OK. To be sure, I haven't seen too many people who will be mad if we draft Stroud. I have seen more than a few who will be mad if we draft the small-framed Young. But you have the right to believe what you want.

The thing about the knock on Stroud is that it was against lesser competition in a non SEC conference in most cases. Georgia and Michigan were the only two teams he played that were on par with OSU.

I agree about the Oline. The starters are pretty good or getting better, but the line is one key injury away from sucking again until they add proper depth. I highly doubt they do it, but I'd like to see the Panthers spend the mid round picks on nothing but Oline depth.

A little about Richardson. If he doesn't end up in the right situation where he has a good QB coach and the team can give him some time, he'll probably bust hard. As has been said before, he's the definition of a boom or bust player. I don't know if the Panthers are the right situation for him. On paper the coaches are excellent, but McCown has never coached beyond high school before. It remains to be seen how good a coach he'll actually be. One last thing is just how much time Reich and Caldwell could give Richardson if McCown doesn't prove to be a good coach?

So one player you aren't in favor of is deemed injury prone after a single game but a guy who is even smaller will never face that problem? You guys can't even be consistent within one thread.

You guys? What is with the constant uneducated takes here?

Matt Corral was injury prone in college, and couldn’t even last a preseason game in the NFL before a major injury.

Bryce was not. And will not.

Yeah I'm not worried about that with Stroud or Young any of these QB's could bust we could argue all day long about the level of competition they faced. There are other QB's who have feasted on lesser teams who have gone on to do big things in the NFL and there are QB's who have beaten great college teams and went on to become busts. It's a crapshoot like the saying goes. Richardson is a huge gamble for whichever team takes him but if he is committed to working on his game I could see him doing some Lamar Jackson like things.

    • Just trying to make talk, draft is over and still 5 months till the season.
    • Lol I checked again and they had removed that part, but it’s still on the page they linked. Walter Football gave them an A- grade and also threw a heavy dig at them for passing on Stroud hahaha
