NFL insider: Brian Burns' extension could be close to Myles Garrett's deal

Article:

There’s no question that Brian Burns is about to get paid, and the Carolina Panthers certainly seem intent on starting up those new checks pretty soon. But what are the numbers on those checks going to look like?

According to NFL insider Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, Burns’ expected extension should surpass what the Miami Dolphins gave fellow pass rusher Bradley Chubb last year. Heck, it could even approach what star Myles Garrett has from the Cleveland Browns.

Meirov writes:

Brian Burns is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and the Carolina Panthers have made it abundantly clear he’s a big part of their future.

The Rams offered two first-round picks and a second-round pick for Burns before last year’s trade deadline, only for Carolina to decline. The Bears then wanted Burns in offers for the No. 1 overall pick, but Carolina made it clear he’s off-limits.

The former first-round pick out of Florida State led the Panthers in sacks last season with 12.5 and has totaled 38 sacks during the first four years of his career. The team has big plans for him as it transitions from a 4-3 base defense to a 3-4 under new defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.

An extension for Burns should surpass the five-year, $110 million deal Bradley Chubb signed after he was traded to Miami, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if it hovers around Myles Garrett’s $25 million AAV.

That $25 million annual value currently ranks as the third-highest average amongst all edge defenders. Only Pittsburgh’s T.J. Watt ($28 million) and Los Angeles’ Joey Bosa ($27 million) are raking in more cash per year.

Now, yes, Burn’s production and overall game may not yet be on the same level as that of a Watt, Bosa or Garrett. But if you’re doing good business, sometimes you’re paying for what you’ll get—not for what you’ve already gotten.

And if the Panthers have already gotten a two-time Pro Bowler in Burns, they could be getting a whole lot more out of the 25-year-old and his ascending stock.

I like Burns as a pass rusher, but we have been talking about what he is going to develop into since his rookie year and he is still basically the same player.

I dont agree with giving a pass rush specialist complete DE money, but it is too late now, our only choice is to sign him.

A perfect example that nobody disrespects Panther players more than Panther fans.

Just for giggles. What would you pay Burns?

Nobody is going to say Burns is on the same level as Garrett, Bosa, or Watt. Ok maybe Panthers homers will....

I already said they have to pay him and the rate will be 25m per year, I dont see him getting less....No way we can let him walk for nothing.

So all of this is because Brian isn't the Bestest Edge in football? What is that? Reverse Homerism?

All of what? I like Burns, I already said that. Im sorry i dont hype our guys up to be something they arent?

He could still develop though, he has been playing under the big top for the past few years...Now he will have a chance to show what he can do in a actual NFL scheme. The OLB role should suit him better in theory.

The upside is he should be in his prime for the entirety of this next contract.

Let him Play this year and see if he becomes a more complete player with proper coaching in his new role.  If so, tag him (currently 20M) then make him prove it for a second year.  Then sign long term if he shows he can be a 3 down player effectively

First you downplay his ability. Then you throw out excuses for what you call less than stellar play. Then finish off with a maybe a change of position will make him a better player.

Well, it seems as though we are in for a long season if one of our best players isn't really all that good. Dang, and here I was getting all excited for the year to start.

    • I personally think you are trying to talk yourself into circles here... It's ok to say Bryce played incredible the last 5 weeks... I know there are plenty of people on this board who desperately need the doom-and-gloom narrative, but I genuinely question how much NFL QB play some of these people really have watched when they still question him being the unquestioned starter for next year...  Again, that being said, no one is crowning him at all. I think Bryce is one of the best stories going into 2025 bc his season last year was so outlandishly unprecedented. It's totally fair to personally not believe in Bryce. Plenty of sports "journalists" need to write stories, and that's an easy narrative path... But I think that actual people in the know rank Bryce much higher. That's the fun thing about sports... we shall see!
    • Regardless of how we got here, any rational fan should be excited by how well Bryce played down the stretch. Anyone not happy about that level of play either doesn't know what they're looking at, or they're still trying to drive tired narratives. Obviously, Cam had an all-time rookie season, and I'm not putting the two in the same basket yet, but as someone who has watched every snap of Panthers football since the start of the new millennium (Im old), Bryce was playing at a higher level at the end of 2024 than Cam was at the end of 2012 (his 2nd season). Cam continued to develop into MVP form, something Bryce has to prove, but as someone who watched both (and will stan for Cam always), Bryce was playing at a higher level to end year 2 than Cam did.  Go watch the film if you dont believe me. None of that means anything for the future. But the people who said BY9 couldnt play in this league are wrong.   That being said, the only thing that matters is this year. #20 is perfectly fair IMO going into the season. I mean think about it, how would you rank him??!  His in-season turnaround is one of the wildest things I've ever seen... how do you rank a guy who looked like a massive bust in September and by January was consistently playing at a top 10 level? My excitement level is pretty damn high heading into this season. There were throws from the Chiefs game onward where Bryce had Drew Brees levels of anticipation. Im excited to see what he can do with a full deck on offense, something we really never gave Cam. Really hope and expect Bryce to move up this list this season.
    • Not really, the only QB's (other than Anthony Richardson) ranked below him are new to their teams as a placeholder starter or drafted in 2024 or 2025, not a lot of gymnastics to get there. It's not about how many that is, if it's 20, 12, or 2... It means there isn't a QB who's team has committed to them for the long term right now that they have ranked below Bryce. That's not a great thing.
