With 5 spots basically already locked unless we go with 7 (which we just might if the coaching staff is mindful off the past), that final spot is basically between:

Damiere Byrd, Shi Smith.

I think CJ Saunders, Josh Vann and Marquez Stevenson are damn near already on PS.

As far as Marshall, just give the man his snaps and he'll work. Tbh, I'm expecting Derek Brown-ish last season type ascension.

With teams more than likely keeping 3 qb's on the 53 after that new emergency qb rule i really don't see room for 7 Wr's. We need to keep extra cb's and O-line if anything considering current injuries.

Carolina Panthers WR group

BY CAT CRAVE

Wide receiver is probably the position that will be most discussed for this Carolina Panthers team aside from quarterback and for a good reason. The team traded away one of the league's best and most consistent young pass catchers D.J. Moore with hopes of getting their quarterback of the future, but that may come back to haunt them.

Free agent signing Adam Thielen may seem like a steal on the surface given the veteran wideout's previous production. But there is a reason the player was made available.

Thielen is squarely in the post-prime of his career and is no longer that No. 1 target that can be relied upon to take over a game. Even with having some of the surest hands in the league by far. Something that should mitigate the failings of Shi Smith in that category a season ago.

D.J. Chark is also a nice addition on the outside, giving Carolina some much-needed reliable speed to spread out the defense. However, this seems like a team trying to replace a Swiss army knife with two or three players that only do part of what Moore did so well.

Unless pieces like Terrace Marshall Jr. and Laviska Shenault Jr. show flashes of greatness, there isn't that one player for anyone to worry about. And that is a concern.

IMO, the importance of having a star/#1 is overrated.  Most of the SB winners from the last ten years or so didn't have a star/#1.  Would rather have a group of 3-4 good receivers.

I agree.  Game changing wide outs are a luxury, not a requirement in the NFL.

Moss, TO, Fitzgerald, Calvin J, Steve Smith, Julio Jones - This is way too talented of a list of players at a single position to not have a ring.  There's obviously tons of great players at every position to never win a ring, I just don't think it compares to the level of talent these wideouts possessed.

Yeah you could argue that teams use that wr1 as a crutch. 2015 we had jags on the field and a rb rotation. Obviously we had Olsen at TE but a combo of Thielen and Hurst gives you that check down/red zone safety net. It's also arguably harder for teams to game plan against a team that spreads the ball out vs knowing Either DJ or CMC is getting the ball every snap

I hope you're right I would love to be proven wrong. I just feel we have to prove it. These young WR"s have not accomplished anything yet. And the 2 vets Adam/Chark are #2 WR's at best.

I mean, that's not really true.

Thielen and Chark, when healthy, have more than proved they're at worst WR 2's with Chark having low end 1 upside.  TMJ was looking like a legitimate WR2 in his own right late last year with garbage coaching and QB play, no reason he shouldn't improve this year and early reports are that he is.

Sure, Mingo is the question mark, but even if you look at Laviska as the 4th, he's a weapon who can be used in a variety of ways and has shown big play potential for us.  And I don't think Mingo is going to have any trouble making an impact this year.

The point is even if you're upset we don't have a true #1, you have to be able to look at what we do have and realize it's not a bottom 5 group.

Just because I have us as a bottom 5 WR core doesn't mean I don't think we can win games.

Im one of the few who have gone on record saying we will win the NFC South this year. Im just saying if we added a legit WR like Hopkins this offense could really be something special.

What's wrong with saying that?

Elijah Moore was traded to the Browns for a second round pick. I highly doubt he’s in any sort of risk of not making the team. Use an accurate example next time buddy.

Ok buddy. I wasn’t aware that the Jets traded him but my point stands that obviously the Jets had no room for him with Wilson and all their additions like Lazard.

Moss, TO, Fitzgerald, Smith and Julio all played in the Super Bowl. Would we have been better off as a team with Dilfer instead of Cam? Football is a team sport and all of these guys were literally a play away from being SB winners. That one play doesn’t mean star WRs are worse than a group of good WRs. Calvin is the only one who didn’t get close but Detroit was horrifically bad overall his career.

The last 4 SBs had AJ Brown, D. Smith, Higgins, Chase, Kupp, Godwin, Evans, Hill and Deebo. That’s a lot of star WRs. Out of the last 8 SB teams, only KC with Mahomes and Kelce didn’t have a stud WR. The other 7 teams had 1 or 2 stud WRs.

He fetched the 2nd round pick that essentially got them Rodgers. Jets fans will tell you that Moore is talented, he’s been stuck with shitty QBs and got into it with the coaching staff last year. Reports are that he has been excellent in OTAs for Cleveland.

I hope so.  I think this group is probably better overall than the 2015 crowd. Olsen was a beast so I certainly don’t want to slight him but aside from him there wasn’t much there.

This group may be similar to the 2015/group, never can tell. I remember the NFL Championship game against the Cardinals. Greg Olsen had 113 yards receiving as did Corey Brown. (Corey who?) Ted Ginn had 53 yards receiving. I will take one of those years. Someone will emerge.

I just looked up the trade and let’s clarify a bit. The Jets didn’t really get a 2nd for Moore. They turned their 3rd into a 2nd for Moore. Also, that 2nd was one part of a package for Rodgers including a likely 2024 1st rounder and moving up a couple picks in the 1st.

Again, Moore was low man on the totem pole for the Jets. They added Lazard, Hardman and Cobb to Wilson and Davis. That’s 5 WRs ahead of him. Moore was disposable and they did a good job getting value for him.

I think my point stands that the “best” route runners minimum targets were set a bit low. If Moore was the 6th best WR on his team before the trade, it’s hard to take it seriously calling him an NFL best.

What's wrong with saying that?

We always overvalue our players in here. I was poo poo’d last year saying we had a bottom tier WR corps, dropping off hugely after DJ who also isn’t in the top tier elite guys. We lost DJ and now we have a stud WR group? I really hope Mingo is stud in waiting.

The 2015 season is a great example of Cam spreading it around, but we lost in part when Cotchery couldn’t just make the catch without needing replay and when Ginn tipped a ball for an interception. We lost the 2017 playoff game because we had no WRs and haven’t been back since. I don’t know why we have this thing for not wanting stud WRs because of 2015 when Smith is such a beloved ex-player and our WR weaknesses have showed up to help end our last two playoff games.

    • Am I reading this right? We've had awful QB play for over half a decade...and we'd pass on Dak because he has no "clutch gene" or can't get it done in the playoffs--something we haven't sniffed and have no reason to believe we will for years to come?!? Sorry, but this sounds like a starving man turning down a box of crackers because they're Great Value instead of Ritz. If a Great Value QB is available when you have none, there is no deliberation needed.
