Cam Newton on Bryce

From top to bottom, it’s not set up for him to be successful.

a person like Bryce could be scarred, just like any other QB could, if thrown to the wolves too early

Cam also gives his side on the great preseason debate about his cast vs Bryce’s.   Not even close.

So he thinks sitting a rookie QB ala Mahommes/Smith in KC is a good idea

Talks about rookies playing that were in a good position to play as rookies.  Gives Russell Wilson as an example.  Setup for early success.  Situation was good.

it’s the whole good position, bad position narrative.  You can ruin hurt guys by putting them in bad spots.  We are presently not a great situation for Bryce to be successful and grow.   It’s about what they put around him.  What they ask of him as a QB.

I remember Reich in one of his pressers over minicamp or possibly during training camp literally bragging about how much he was putting on Bryce's plate and it kind of took me by surprise.

It doesn't appear that he was exaggerating that statement.

Yeah, Cam doesn't elaborate on this part but KC was already a playoff caliber team when they got Mahomes and still sat him. I think Wilson did legit win his qb competition in Seattle where after like 2 training camp practices Reich said Bryce was the guy

crazy to think cam only lasted in the league for 9 years.... great times but man it went by too quick! I still think he could play a taysom hill roll if he wanted.

I'd rather not see him play ever again, if he has to imitate Taysom Hill to get on the field.

    • I could use less of Steve Smith's opinion in my life.
    • It probably would be. Given that most 6th and 7th rounders aren't NFL game day material except on the Panthers, the pick might improve us slightly with a drafted player, but I'd like to see us actually be able to open up the field. I do think some of our offensive problem stem from defenses aren't afraid of Bryce's arm. They cover a short field and that makes life a lot easier for them.  If it doesn't work though, unless we get rid of the scouting department and whatever drafting algorithm Dave is making us use, it won't really matter anyway.
    • I think the Baker/Darnold thing has been overblown. QBs that struggle with the team that drafts them and go on to find success elsewhere often do end up going to multiple new teams before they figure it out and/or find the right situation. It just so happened that we traded for both guys in back-to-back years and neither player had quite figured it out yet. Baker, I think, needed more time and a better supporting cast. Darnold, I think, benefitted from a year on the bench in San Francisco a ton. I don't really have any ill will towards either of them. I think they both came here with the best intentions after coming from difficult circumstances; unfortunately the Panthers were - and still are, it seems - also in the process of figuring things out.
