For real. People need to rewatch the plays and try and point to a better option/decision than the one BRyce makes.

99% of the time you won't be able to. All the receivers are covered or the line has allowed pressure before he can get through his reads, sometimes both on the same play.

He can't will his receivers open nor can he use fire to make his line block better.

The scheme and personnel is the problem. I honestly don't know what more people want Bryce to do. You wish he had a stronger arm? OK, point to the plays we have run where arm strength would have helped him complete that 5 yard hitch where the receiver is completely covered the entire time. We aren't running any deep/intermediate routes because the line can't block long enough to make it happen.

Bryce has proven he can be a winner. Literally everyone else on the team has not. Im finally ok with firing all the coaching staff and the GM and rebuilding this thing around Bryce... like we have a choice anyway..

we don't at this point. Dance with the one that brang ya. We have all of next year to truly evaluate bryce. I'm willing to give a young first time HC more leash than I am reich and this staff. With their experience we shouldn't be looking anywhere near this bad.

Eh, i'm not on the Bryce train at all but that's pretty tpyical learning curve for a rookie. May not fit the 'super processor' narrative but Bryce himself probably doesn't have anything to do with that.

From an objective perspective though, and being the lover of defense that I am, that play was fantastic. The Bears did exactly what you describe and it damn near worked to perfection to ice the game. As a general football fan you love to see it.

The issue is that the "super processor" narrative got pushed for a reason. Everyone with working vision who wasn't wildly biased could see that his physical toolset was marginal. He HAS to be mentally superior to have a chance.

It should be a real wakeup call for the holdouts to watch a rookie UDFA QB coming out of D2 college football outplay him last night. Not just in terms of results but just in terms of passing the eye test and looking the part. Honest to god, if you didn't know anything about the two guys and who was who if you tuned into that game and I told you one guy was the #1 overall pick that a team traded a haul to get and the other guy was a UDFA D2 QB, 10 out of 10 football fans would've said that the Bears' QB was the #1 overall pick and Bryce was the UDFA D2 guy. That's the sad state of reality that we find ourselves in.

But Bryce can't be the typical rookie because he doesn't have the typical rookie physical traits upside.

Agreed on the defensive trap. It was beautiful.

this has been far and away his biggest issue.

the most consistent mistake he makes is coming off reads too early. He works his way through his progressions so fast that he’ll give up on guys right before they come open. Then he starts buying time and holding onto the ball, hoping things break down downfield

i mean I get it. The line’s garbage and our receivers are the worst in the league at separation. Even the guys that come open don’t tend to stay that way. All that messes with your internal clock. But he does need to hit that back foot, give it that extra heart beat from time to time, and throw it.

Tepp and company put all his chips in on Young...to be fair you should give him another year but from what I've seen he doesn't have it...so why waste that. Rookies have bad 1st years but you usually see something that says...Hey now. But haven't  seen a flicker of anything really....slow, short, weak armed every game is the same.... but its not all his fault. For him to come anywhere close to succeeding every other position will have to be way above talent level... and thats not reality, especially with Fitts terrible talent evaluations.... Its a perfect storm and a mess on many levels... hope it gets better in a couple years but you can't turn a cruise ship on a dime...

It doesn't matter how high your football IQ is if you don't have the physical tools to deliver on it.

I'm honestly not sure he's nearly as cerebral on the field as folks want to believe. Last night during the game thread on our final drive I pointed out that that Bryce was throwing to the same basic area every play and that if the Bears were smart they'd just camp a defender there. Well, they actually did one better. They had a LB give a blitz look pre-snap on 3rd down and then drop back into a robber position right there in the middle of the field 6-8 yards deep where Bryce had been throwing the ball every play. Bryce threw it right to him and he dropped it. The Bears 100% sprung a trap on Bryce and he never saw it coming. I thought they were being dumb letting us have that play over and over several times but they were actually playing chess against checkers. They were setting Bryce up to expect that to be open and to bait him into throwing a pick. He stumbled right into the trap and the defender just botched it. That's not high level cerebral stuff from your super processor QB.

The QBs job is to read the defense as it’s being shown, not to predict the future. The LB kept showing blitz even when the ball was snapped. He ran up, engaged with a lineman and then backed out last second. Bryce threw the ball to the part of the field that the blitz was coming from, as he should have.

edit: Also Bryce is 21 years old and seeing new looks every week. He needs time to learn.

This is a hilariously bad take. The QB's job is to effectively execute the play, period. If you're getting consistently fooled by pre-snap defensive disguises you're not gonna make it long in the NFL.

Sure but he missed a wide open TMJ on a crossing route who had 3-5 yards of separation, with the potential to house it.

He was gun shy last night too. I saw plenty of open receivers, and he either just hesitated and didn’t pull the trigger, or he didn’t progress to them in time (or by design he wasn’t supposed to look their way).

Every position group has regressed. This a complete failure from top to bottom.

Including Young. He’s a rookie so he gets the least blame to me, but he ain’t showing anything right now. Hell he may be broken at this point. And I don’t see anything that validates “#1 pick”. Again, not his fault. But damn this is depressing poo and this is a low point in franchise history.

Possibly. I'd have to go back to look and confirm, but I think part of the reason Dalton had more success is because he was more willing to throw it up to a receiver who was "covered" and let them go "make a play". I think Bryce looks for them to either be open or anticipate for them to be open. Sometimes neither will present itself and the best you got is a receiver one on one with a defender... sometimes you have to toss it up.

Granted with our receivers most of the time that 50/50 ball wont be caught, but taking those shots are still important for an offense.

    • We get it, Bryce sucks and is unlikely to get better. Mopium is just the opposite form of copium from hopium. At this point, this is another mopium thread. This dead horse has been flogged enough. End the torture.
