This gives 2015 going into 16 panthers off-season vibes cutting J-No.   I feel like this is start of a collapse for the 49ers.

Hard for that to happen with the player talent.

They are still absolutely stacked.

Wilks is overrated on this board. He is alright but his defenses sure seem to get exposed a lot and he can't seem to adjust at all.

Overrated?

Bro look at the comments in these threads. People are legit happy he was fired. For whatever reason he is the most hated HC.

It was weird people placed all the blame on him after the game ended. I thought Shanahan was the best offensive mind in football?

I'm guessing he told Shanahan to fug off.

They kind of clash IMO.  Wilks seems like an old school more conservative defensive coach while Kyle is analytical new school offensive coach.  If Kyle is looking for the next DeMeco Ryans he may never find it.

Wilks talent as a DC doesn’t compare to Norman.
Losing Wilks will do nothing. They are too talented a unit.

He had a top 3 defense lmao

This guy is held to the highest of standards it seems. At this point someone should hire him as HC and tell him SB or bust. I wouldn't doubt he comes close to that SB.

Taking a top defense and adding a premier player like Chase Young midseason and having them drop to 3 isn't that great of a task.  I get replacing DeMeco might be impossible, but lets not act like Wilks crushed it as DC in SF...

In Wilks' lone season with the Niners, the defense had its share of ups and downs. A unit that led the NFL in multiple categories in 2022 under DeMeco Ryans -- including fewest points per game allowed (16.3) and defensive expected points added (89.58) -- took a step back in 2023.

San Francisco still finished third in points allowed (17.5) this season, but the 49ers were ninth in defensive EPA (41.48) and sprung significant leaks against the run in the playoffs, allowing the Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs to average 5.1 yards per carry and 149.3 yards per game in the postseason.

Right, he took a talented defense, It got more talented and still was worse. Then you have the offensive head coach having to step in to change defensive game plans. VS Seattle and the Bengals this year they had to change his game plan up. I think in Seattle it was him leaving Ward on one side of the field only. Seattle obviously saw it and kept giving Metcalf opportunities on the other side of the field. Shannahan had to step in and have Ward start shadowing Metcalf. Its the same poo we saw with Ron Rivera, Defenses just giving the game away with head scratching concepts ( as mentioned here Mike Evans or not giving Greenlaws back up more help with Kelce etc... ) Bend but don't break, vanilla 4 man rushes and 4th quarter defense that lets teams back into the game. Wilks got dealt a fair hand both here and in SF and didn't live up to it.

Shanahan has came up short so many times in the SB.

At what point is he the problem?

Dann Quinn got a HC job and his defense got ram rocked in the playoffs by the Packers.

Wilks defense makes it to the SB goes to OT vs the greatest QB since Brady and he gets fired.

And people wonder why people say minorities coaches are struggling to get HC jobs. This type of stuff has been happening for decades. I choose not to ignore it.

Wilks is just another victim of the system sadly. Maybe he should go to college and just stay out of the NFL.

I’m not a fan of Quinn. Did he inherit that defense or create it though? Seriously if Quinn was our HC I would be happy about it.

Wilks was in college as DC for Missouri it was similar.

In his lone season in charge of the defense, the Tigers struggled greatly in Wilks’ 4-2-5 defensive system, particularly against the run. Of Missouri’s 13 opponents, seven of them rushed for over 200 yards. In-state opponent Southeast Missouri State even racked up 294 yards on the ground.

Although I don't think Wilks was the greatest HC, I think he's a decent DC.  Pat  Mahomes and the Chiefs put up 12 points against the defense, and needed overtime to do it. That's about as good as one can hope for, in a championship game no less (without your excellent safety and in a game in which Greenlaw got injured). Firing him at this point looks extremely sketchy.

I smell a rat, and it's not Wilks. I will now never ever root for Shanahan or the 49ers ever again (regardless if CMC is there or not). They're on the root-against-list along with the Cowboys.
