Not sure what you mean about flexibility.  We can still resign him under the tag.

The tag for 2024 is around 20 million.   Not sure for 2025

Which years we absorb certain amounts. We can manipulate all of that more in a longer term contract.

we wouldnt need to at those numbers.  I suspect we tag him, try to trade and/or get a deal done, make him play on the tag if nothing is worked out and then trade him to a contender during the year.  I doubt we push this for 2 years but I guess its possible

But the bigger point is this franchise completely bungled this situation, basically a text book lesson in what not to do

$20 million this year limits us to a degree. I agree with the franchise bungling comment though.

The Rams made an offer that Carolina couldn't refuse, and yet they somehow did. It was all downhill from there.

....I'm more into seeing how Danny boy handles his first big player decision... I say tag for 20m... try and get something... but I suspect this bum will walk with no compensation because the window has passed to get something... it was botched from the beginning...Fuging Fitt didn't know the value of a dollar.

Imagine the capital we could have had with three simple plays we didn't make:

1- Take the reported offers for 1-8 in 2021 - could've still landed Slater, Parsons or Darrisaw and gained a 1st or 2nd

2- Played hardball for CMC and got more for him.  I mean, (2) 2nds and a 3rd should've been the minimum target.  Or at the least, you know, get a known asset packaged with in return for the best dual threat in the league.

3- (2) 1sts for Burns

This crap operation could have had 2 firsts in 2022, 5 in the top-60 in 2023, AND 2 firsts this year EASILY if they played their cards right, never traded DJ Moore, and would probably be looking for a QB in the this draft.

How we managed to screw up our drafts this much was simply incompetence on monumental level.

I just don't want to mess with it.

Tag and trade sounds like a good idea ...but what if you can't get a trade partner then you're stuck.

I mean it's not like it would be as hard as letting pep go because he was such a part of our identity.

Burns ain't no pep. Just cut bait. Not worth the cost or risk of cost.

It kept feeling stranger every year.  The Horn pick felt so unneeded at the time.  It wasn't on many/to any radars until DB rumors came in about him and Surtain within the final few weeks leading into that draft.

It was even more notably obvious when we were all looking at that 2022 class ahead of the draft and saw this massive 131-pick gap between pick #6 (Cross dammit) and the next.

Then we trade up again losing a crap ton of capital for Bryce - when we could've sat and probably got Richardson at 9.

We had so much to gain yet bled through all that we had like monopoly money.  Dan better do a lot damn better.

Burns ain't half a pep.  Tagging him would put him in a reasonable contract for next season and some edge needy team would (or should) give us something of value for him to have him around $20M and have the rights to negotiate with him.....let him be their headache.

He should have put up the numbers this past season, instead he had one really good game and then played it safe.  He is not worth $30M until he actually shows he is, which I don't think he can.  Hell, Hassan Reddick is a much better player than Burns and can't get into the $20Ms.
