Canales on evaluating roster: "I have the benefit of not having an emotional connection"

i'm thinking/hoping/praying that 2 things happen.

1) after evaluating the roster they get rid of the bums and then replace as many as they can with the type player "dawg" they are looking for and then fill out the rest of the roster with FAs that fit that mold

we should have a core, of sorts, to work with and build around and from that they should be able to

2) build a scheme based on who we have on the roster. one that takes advantage of whatever strengths they can find and takes into consideration their limitations.

part of me just wants to scrap the whole roster and start over, but that's just the emotional part of me. i understand that most of this team we saw last year will be most of who we have next year. hopefully with a few subtractions and a few additions we'll have something to build on that isn't miserable to watch.

i think that's what my ceiling is set at...just don't make it miserable to watch.

I'm with you on that. I just think if we're going to transition into a more modern offense, now is the time to go through the growing pains. A lot of the dilemma is whether or not Tepper has the patience to allow any kind of transition.

I mean, that is no doubt the hope.  No way to know for sure, I just find it doubtful Morgan disagreed with all the bad moves.  Got to think he was like minded to some extent.

yeah it just wouldn't make sense to disagree with someone for the most part & continue to call them a close friend.if so, that's a strange relationship.

to a degree i think it will be modern, but it will be relying on the run setting up the pass.

one of these interviews he did he talked about his commitment to the run and how if you want to have a team that goes deep into the playoffs you have to have a team that can run the ball well and that can even depend on it because every round you go in the playoffs, the pass D gets quite a bit tougher. you've got to be able to compensate for that.

i think that fits also with what i think we all know, most of the season your passing game is going to carry you. as the season wears on, though, you've got to be relying more on the run or at least you've got to be able to depend on it. running games get harder to stop as the season wears on and defenses get tired.

it could be one of those moments in life where you go along for a ride that you think is a good idea at the time, but then you wreck and think, "maybe that wasn't such a good idea. maybe i should do something different next time."

the best growth comes from learning from bad decisions.

Canales literally just said yesterday that he's not an offensive guru, and went on and on about being stubborn about the run game. I think we'll see the same sub 200 passing yard numbers again this year unless he finds another cmc to inflate the numbers with yac

Or any WR than can get YAC. I swear ours fell over half the time they actually caught the ball.

well, not really that.  But it's hard to imagine Morgan surviving in Tepperland if he was voice consistently going in a different direction.   Because Tepper reportedly has targeted those types.   So you go to think Morgan was part of some of at least some of these bad ideas.  Who knows exactly which ones.  But if him and Fitt were in sync....that's probably not great.

Canales had THE worst run game in all the NFL.  They had the least yards.  The worst yards per carry.

like I said there were a lot of red flags in this hiring

Yeah, he could very well be Matt Rhule with a porn addiction. When you add in the Morgan hire, (ie. promoting someone from within the worst front office in franchise history) the more this seems like more of the same from Tepp. When he said, "I'm in the background now" all he meant by that is, "I'm not doing press anymore. The FO and coaching staff can take the public beat down for my decisions."

Don't get me wrong, I like Dan and Canales and I hope they succeed. What choice do I have? But I wouldn't bet on it.

They were picked by a separate Sportsology Firm. Tepper does a lot of things wrong, but to his credit he tries a different approach each time. Or at least he has so far. Hiring a 3rd party to help with interviews and hiring was the right call. The next step is for him to actually stay in the background and let the football minds that were hired handle their business. Maybe it will work? Maybe it won’t?

I don't buy that.  I mean, Tepper hired them to have their own input....but Tepper also had a team working on the hires.  They were just a voice.  So was Dave, Nicole, Jim FREAKING Caldwell which I still can't get over....

But there is no way I believe an outside firm searched the world over and said we found the guy Mr. Tepper you need to hire.  He was right here in house and part of your team that was making all these bad moves that lead to you being he worst professional team in all of sports....and they went with that and that alone.  That was Dave, Nicole and Jim Caldwell hiring the GM.

    • He wouldn’t have done either. He would have signed Kerry Collins or Matt Hasselbeck in Free Agency and then drafted somebody else tbh.    It was clear that Cam was better than the other two but everyone was scared to bet on him because Jamarcus Russell was still fresh on everyone’s mind.    Guarantee he would have brought back Matt Moore or and signed some vet.
    • I mean it works the other way too. Look at the people who skipped over Smith, Jenkins, Muhammad, Gamble, Kalil, etc. We have had more misses than hits but I promise other teams do the same thing.
