Justin Fields traded for bag of chips, why couldn’t we get Gerber competition?

For whatever you think of fields, young did not show enough his rookie year to just hand over the Reigns for a second season

smart move by the Steelers, would have love the move for us too but I’m not overly upset, def something I would have liked to hear us linked to

We are pretty sure Young isn't it but we know Fields isn't. That sounds like a miserable future there.

I think it'd be a good idea for a team to take a running QB who might not be good enough to be a starter and just make him a short-yardage runner and trick play specialist.

Imagine having a QB who could come in at the goal line and on 4th & short and be as effective as Cam Newton was in those situations. He could also be good for some trickery here and there.

I guess the closest thing we've seen to this would be Taysom Hill in New Orleans, but he's not nearly the short-yardage runner Cam was or Jalen Hurts or Josh Allen are at QB.

Your post had me curious so i looked up cam stats rushing compared to hill.  Couldnt find a short yardage success rate for cam found hills around 79%.  Who knows both very good at running cam def had the edge passing.

So the steelers got Mr unlimited and then traded for Justin fields to be a backup? Weird

Pickett cried when we got Wilson.  Because he wanted to be 1.... but it's strange he went to eagles to be the backup.

Pickett also stopped working with WR right after he found out we got wilson.

I'm shocked how Pickett behaved.

But with that said we had no one behind wilson. So we would have been looking at drafting in the 3rd.

So With getting fields, we're kicking the can down the field another year. As well looking at getting a comp pick for him if he goes on to be a starter for someone.

Also funny fact, fields is a year younger than Pickett.

Bears didn't get fleeced, they did Fields right. Imagine our team having respect for our players when it's time to move on. Cam, Smitty, etc all left in a shitty way

Good for Fields but this seems like PR put out by the team.  They probably got offered a better 6th by a team he preferred not to be traded to.  If a Darnold package was on the table you know they wouldn't have turned it down.

Fields has never averaged more than 200 passing yards a year....even with weapons and a good oline .  Everyone that thinks fields is awesome just learned how awesome every coach in the nfl considers him...with all that said he still would possibly be an upgrade to b young.

As a Steeler fan, I agree.  Fields had one season that looked good. But he had WR and a line that he should have had multiple seasons.

we've took mitch Trubisky and hoped it was the bears coaching who was the problem...... but we learned mitch was horrible. And he was so horrible that a #3 QB was able to take his spot.

I hope fields shows to being a #2. If he does then sign a long contract that's cheap. So then in a 2026/2027 he can start and look good...... but I think he'll hit free agency next year and someone will have him be a starter. And then we get a comp pick for him.

you know what Sam Darnold & Bryce Young have in common besides having an almost identical passer rating there first season as a starter in Carolina?

was that the Carolina Panthers thought that both of these Qbs could be fixed because Sam in NY & Bryce in his rookie season in Carolina had played behind one of the leagues worse oL & the Panthers thought well okay that's it then all we have to do is simply give these guys adequate time to throw the ball then yeah they would both look like that elite Qb who was drafted #1  & #3 overall  & begin carving up NFL defenses especially if they had elite WR's

& well we all know that the Sam Darnold project failed miserably & the jury is still out on Bryce Young &  that history repeats itself...just saying

I didnt think about the comp pic formula with fields if they could rehab his image and he signs a big money deal next season pit could make out like bandits

As much as it hurts to mention the two in the same convo given what we sacrificed to draft Bryce there are definite parallels between them.

First there's the passing completion percentage number. Bryce Young finished his rookie season with a 59.8 and Sam Darnold is at 59.7 for his career.

Then there's the ever used excuse about coaching. Adam Gase Frank Reich same poo. Sam also had a mostly awful to mediocre offensive line in NY. Same excuse was used here with Rhule. We know everything that followed. The very brief 3 game high and the factory of sadness that awaited.

Demeanor wise they both seem to generally be very friendly likeable and reasonably intelligent guys. On field though there just seems to be something missing. If you draft a QB first or top 3 you want him to show you his competiveness even if he's going down swinging. My own observation is it seems like both Sam and Bryce were just going through the motions. Like at the end of the day it's just a job not the end of the world. Hey there's nothing wrong with that for QB's who just want to fill a career bouncing around as a backup. But for at the very top of the draft you need to see a whole lot more than that.

The thing about Sam is he actually has every physical tool you could want. And even then it's still not enough. Bryce Young doesn't have that advantage and he's had really bad footwork to boot. I guess we'll have to see if the super processor smaller Payton Manning talk ever comes to fruition because he's going to need it.

I told people he would be cheap. We didn't bring him in because they know he would beat Bryce for the starting job.

IMO the Bryce bar is really low. But Canales couldn’t have gotten hired not being behind Bryce Young; there is no reason to hope for competition this year.

Theoretically though, not talking starters only. Probably half the backups (could beat him out) too. It doesn’t validate anything other than he is one notch higher than Bryce.

Then you still have a guy you have to decide on fast because of that contract. Won’t be cheap.

So if he doesn’t truly light it up, you back in the land of lukewarm conviction.

yeah I swear it feels like dejavu at times &  i cannot believe no & I mean no one else is talking about the fact that we just did this exact same thing we are doing now with Bryce Young whenever  we traded the Jets a 2nd & 4th & 6th round picks back in 2021 for Sam Darnold....just saying

    • Exactly. How would a chip in the ball know when a player was down? That element will absolutely still be a referee determination.
    • This is you, bringing Smith and Mills into the conversation about Bryce. This is you again relating those two to Bryce  You are absolutely relating these players, possibly the only one doing so, and then somehow calling other posters stupid about it. But don't let that pesky fact stop you - by all means, please continue to demean us/others in your responses.
