Moose didn’t show much in college until his 4th year and even then it was less than half the stats/production XL just showed.

lot of players just had one legit year of college play.  Not sure the reasons why matter that much.  What matters most is the type player you are as you enter the NFL.

i remember a certain QB who only had one year of NCAA starting experience getting drafted early and he did alright.

Joe Burrow didn't really do anything until his 5th year in college football.  Couldn't even break a depth chart and had to transfer to play.  I little his 4th.  Guess he should of been a 7th rounder.

I mean, Jonathan Brooks had 1 year of college production.   No one cares about that.  I just don't see the reason mattering.  Not doing is not doing.   XL had a dominant season out of the SEC on a meh offense where everyone knew he was the dude to get the ball.  Mingo had several decent seasons.  I'd take the dominant guy at the end over consistently okay.

Only knock I got Leggette, is I'm not sure Bryce is the style of QB to really get the most out of what he offers.

Completely different position and not a 5th year starter lol. Let’s not be disingenuous now. Early breakout age is one of the best predictive metrics for wr success in the nfl. 5th year breakouts are already rare as it is and even more rare are ones that pan out in the league. You can like XL while acknowledging his success would be a massive outlier

Does this point to the staff not being tied to Bryce past this year, and so they aren't necessarily drafting to suit his play style, or does it point to the staff believing that they can get Bryce up to a level where he can maximize XL's abilities?

Again different position and I think you already know this so idk why I’m wasting my time responding but there’s 2-3 starting wrs and only 1 starting rb. Brooks just turned 21 and was stuck behind a top 10 rb on the depth chart. Why you’re comparing a 5th year breakout wr szn to a 3rd year breakout rb szn I have no idea

And there is the concern. Im just thinking the staff drafted XL because they think he is built for the NFL period. If Bryce cant work with him then they will find somebody who can.

i know, but to a degree to can still apply, imo.

yes, the guy is a unicorn. crazy circumstances and situations i think kept him away from opportunity to prove themselves for a longer period of time. and in that he and cam are similar. cam took a couple years before he was put in a situation to show what he could do given then opportunity. same wit XL. different circumstances, for sure, but really they were drafted based on one one year of production where they looked dominant. does that mean he's going to be the cam newton of WRS? probably not.

one of the arguments against cam was that he had only one year of "real" production at a high level and those arguments were furthered by the lack of people who had transitioned into a legit starter after so little starting experience.

they were/are both unicorns.

That is a great question. I could be the latter with knowing they have plan B at the ready.

The impatient boss selects the instant payoff over the long term (we have seen how that works). A wise boss is not impatient.

If they are smart they aren’t going to build something they can’t use with the next guy, until they know they don’t need a next guy.

edit: do people think that they see Young as cemented in place as that guy?

again, I care about what type of player you are was you enter the draft.   I mean, that's what you are for the most part.

QB, RB, WR, TE, OL  I  mean you can find dudes that really only shined one year at different spots for an assortment of different reasons.  In the end, what type player you are you enter the league is all that matters.   Hell, some dudes come into the NFL and have never played the NFL position they are about to play.....

one year of great play is one year of good play.   And that one year of great play is right before coming into the league.  That's the comparable.  Everyone's path is different.  It's not like there isn't a story on Leggette's journey.  Played QB his senior year of HS, COVID, Gamecocks literally went into seasons without a QB and pulled staff to play, etc.  You think that type team is going to chucking it to Leggette or dink it off to Shi Smith....and by the time they actually got a functional QB, not even a good one, Leggette blew up.  You just choose to ignore that for Leggette.....but acknowledge why others only had 1 great year.

and again, I'm a well documented Gamecock hater.  Leggette is a better prospect coming in than Mingo.  He enters the league playing at a higher level than Mingo ever showed capable with better tools.

Dude on fnz who calls the gamecocks radio went into it hard how in the offseason XL went heavy on nutrition and weight lifting to get to where he is.  Thinks that is a big reason and also he was the only wr and he raved how good rattler was.

based on what we know from David Tepper and how he handles his football team, soccer team and building plans in the community? No one really in the NFL quits and changes things faster than David Tepper.

If Bryce doesn't give them something to legitimately be excited about? They move on.  That's what Tepper has pretty much unquestionably proven.   Bryce gets this year.  He has to perform and prove he is worth something outside of this season.

    • The ceiling for this team feels like a 2020 type season where they play tough competitive games and still lose most of them. Thats 5-6 wins. If Bryce is as bad as last year they’re back to a 2 win type team.
