More of the same, but with actual statistics thrown in with the film review. It's a long one

He puts blame on the offense and coaches as well, but doesn't sound too high on Bryce's ceiling. Lots of words but here's the basic summary

Young’s lack of arm strength and size creates little room for error in his play. If he takes one extra hitch or is a hair late getting rid of the football, defenders often make plays on the ball or squeeze windows even tighter. The issue is that Young constantly needs to take an extra hitch to get enough zip on the ball when throwing to the outside and he often needs to work backward in the pocket to see that target.

What does this all mean for Young going forward? Well, let’s just say it’s not exactly a rosy start to his professional career. It’s a rough statistical profile and his play wasn’t overwhelming when I studied him. Yes, former No. 1 picks like Goff and Trevor Lawrence have overcome their horrid rookie years to become viable quarterbacks, but those are the exceptions to the rule, and Lawrence showed more glimpses of high-end play during his rookie year during the Urban Meyer experience than Young did under Reich and the rest of the Panthers' funky bunch coaches. This is not to say that Young is a bust already, either. His accuracy and intelligence still translate to every offense and still give him a floor as a viable starter, and better teammates, like the newly acquired Diontae Johnson and explosive rookie wideout Xavier Legette, should help highlight those traits even more. But, you take a player No. 1 overall to move the needle, not to just get the job done.

Young has a path to be a quarterback who can keep an offense on time with some ad-libbing ability to add creativity and spice to an offense (Alex Smith, another quarterback with a rough rookie season, is a play style and career comparison I keep coming back to for Young). But to justify that 1.1 selection, Young (and Canales) have to push it even more in 2024 and beyond.

Some people are gonna be so mad with that arm strength description. I agree with it, and feel we are hamstrung by limitations and it will require much extra effort and investment to prop him up. The opposite of how he was sold by the organization and the media. 

The hitch is exactly what I saw when I looked at his film. It is right there for all to see at his pro day. Probably still online. It is just there if you look, it isn’t something I made up for some made up reason like oh that means I hate Bryce Young (people today are so freaking dramatic).

KC wasnt taking home any rings with him as their QB even with a stacked team around him. 

That kind of play can get you to the playoffs and thats about it. WC weekend going home. 

I compared him to Bridgewater before the draft and I stand by the comparison

It will never be physically imposing, for clear reasons. Nothing he can do about that, nothing he should do about that. He needs better coaching, and the weapons need to be better than they were last year. We’ll see if it translates. (if it doesn’t, he won’t get better, and we know how those stories tend to go after 25-30 starts…nature of the biz) The noise doesn’t really matter. Young has the mental make up to work through this, and to me, the goal is LESS “prove he’s a franchise quarterback” in year 2, and MORE “work the plan, harmonize w/ the new WR/TE pieces, incrementally elevate his game.”

That’s just how I’d be looking at it, but I understand it can be frustrating.

I'm sure most people would be happy to have that after all the previous years under Tepper. Five winning seasons in a row plus 4 years of playoffs is a lot better than what the Panthers have done since the last SB appearance.

It's not a good comparison though.

Teddy was ultra-hyper conservative and very rarely ever threw the ball past 10 yards ever. When he did it was accurate, but he rarely ever did it.

Bryce threw more intermediate passes (10-20 yards) in like 5 games than Teddy did all season for us.

Arm Strength is similar but that's about it.

      I definitely respect your opinion more than Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter, and Carmelo Anthony (whom I just watched on their show, all saying NOBODY wants to get the Hornets in the post-season). You win.

      For all the good feelings about Bryce Young, when you read between the lines, it's what DC says and doesn't say that makes us know that Bryce hasn't necessarily been the supercomputer that they thought he would be. This season, Bryce has to make a tangible progression on the field. "A big part of it is being able to operate at the line of scrimmage — not in the huddle — when we want to, and he’s certainly capable of that," Canales said about Young. "It’s not solely on him. It’s a group that’s pretty young. You have to trust all the guys to go up there, communicate verbally or nonverbally and execute what we’re doing. We’ve made huge strides in that regard. His ability to alter things based on what they’re giving you will give us another edge, which he’s continued to grow and had some great examples down the stretch where he identified things they were doing, got us to the right check and capitalized on some plays. Want to see him do that more when it’s appropriate. We don’t need to be changing things just to change it." The implications, perhaps insinuations, are pretty evident. Bryce is just going to have to do better. "And then for Bryce, it’s the identification of early on the cues that the defense are giving us, to be able to eliminate parts of your progression before the ball’s even snapped. That happens with time. I’ve seen quarterbacks really own and master, which allows them to play lightning fast." Obviously Bryce isn't necessarily picking things up as fast as Canales would like, and I can only assume that Canales is making comparisons to Russell Wilson, Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield. But, of course, not everyone picks things up at the same rate. Bryce's pace has left Canales wanting for more. During the coming season, I don't believe that it will be good enough for Bryce to start putting things together in December, evidence of the light switch being on is going to have to show itself in September. Basically, it's really the moment that we've all been waiting for, the one that we thought should've happened earlier, the one that brings Bryce's accountability in the spotlight. On an off note, perhaps to that end, we should consider the possible implications upon the draft, but that's another story.
