Know Your Foe: New England Patriots

2002:  John Fox was the Panthers first time/first year HC where he inherited a listless Seifart 1-15 squad.  I remember him saying that he wanted to win the preseason games to gain confidence and to experience 'how to win'...even with backups.  In 2002 the Panthers went to a surprising 7-9 record, and the next year....Super Bowl.

To be fair, if it wasn't for Randy Fasani leading two fourth-quarter drives to overcome the 16-0 deficit the starters bestowed upon him, the Panthers wouldn't have won any preseason games in 2002, either. And while some extremists on here will tell you even Fasani was better than Young, he was not.

Also, losing 27-3 (field goal from a turnover) in preseason is pretty meaningless. With as many impactful guys being held out as it appears will be the case, just watch it for a bit, realize that losing these games means less than it will in a month, and pray no one is injured -- or this is an 0-17 outfit for sure.

Predictions?

-Final score doesn’t break 20 points.

-Plummer does better than expected (Which isn’t much at all)

-Multiple bad snaps during the game.

-Panthers D gets a minimum 2 turnovers.

-Somebody will make a play you’ve never heard of and you’ll have to look them up during the game.

I don’t know much about Plummer, just based on his highlight tape from last year he does look downfield though.

downfield QBs are at least entertaining one way or the other

    • I don't really care as much about athleticism and arm strength.  While Murray might be better in that regard, I think Bryce has enough of both to do well in the NFL. The main reason this trade reference is silly is the money and the fact that Murray has been around a long while and hasn't proven that he can perform consistently when the game is on the line.  Bryce has shown that he can play well in the clutch (in the few opportunities he has had).
    • If Bryce can continue the level of play he showed after the benching, then there's a good shot we at least compete to win the division. Tampa is a solid team but even last year in our week division they went 10-7 and will be on their 4th OC in as many years. The Saints are a mess and are in a mist of a half rebuild half still trying to compete mode and will probably be starting a rookie QB. The Falcons are a wild card as they have a really good offense but are we really crowning Michael Penix as a franchise QB after just 3 games?  The only thing I want out of this season is for Bryce to come out and without a shadow of a doubt prove he's our franchise QB. If that happens then most of the fanbase would be happy and I believe we'd be in a good place record wise at the end of the season. Maybe falling just short of winning the division with a chance to sneak in as a wild card team.
