Grading our Recent Draft History

Yall grading XL on not getting the guy you wanted.  His rookie season was about a B in reality and you can build on it

Coker is an UNDRAFTED free agent and shouldn't be counted as a draft pick. You have to include him with Hunt and Lewis. 

I honestly think this will eventually turn into a solid draft. But it really could have been better. In a vacuum, I'd give the draft a C+. Given the guys they passed on, I'd give it a solid D-. Maybe an F.

Funny, Smith-Wade was the only pick I liked out of our entire class.  Things that make you go hmmm...

Yep, you never know but I’d hope they would have “tried” the approach to maximize the pick. That said, outside of McCarthy who we didn’t see, this class appears to be a solid QB year. 4 of them were solid starters (remember still rookies) and Penix barely played.

His stats were decent but that’s not surprising given the fact that Legette led the team in WR snaps (50% more than Coker and Thielen) and led the team in targets, 84 compared to 46 and 62.

He was not nearly as effective as Coker and Thielen. He had 5.9 yards per target to their 10.4 and 9.9. The only WR he was more effective than was Mingo.

Again, as a rookie, you expect some of that but I think the disappointment was from the key drops and his body catching. He needs to improve on that and hopefully he can but McConkey had no concerns about his hands and quickness/separation. Legette was a little disappointing and McConkey was exactly what his draft fans were hoping he would be, a QBs best friend. Based on watching the Texans-Chargers game, I highly doubt the Chargers make the playoffs if MConkey isn’t their pick.

that was a foolish gamble. could have lost him. surprised he passed waivers.

The panthers have a "type" of wr they tend to fall in love with, and this trend has transcended different coaching staffs, regimes, gms, and even owners. They love the big ass project dudes that they think they can mold into DK Metcalf of AJ Brown. They usually don't seem to be interested in wrs that are already polished with hands and route running abilities that may have less than ideal height/weight/athleticism that the panthers always seem to be looking for. .

They literally drafted a wr in r1 or r2 in three out of the last four drafts and they are STILL LOOKING for a #1 WR. If that isn't a huge indictment on their ability to evaluate wr talent from college, idk what is.

Only good thing is I think Morgan fired alot of the previous scouts iirc. Maybe that'll help. .

I personally think they need to take their medicine this off season and keep their hands off wrs until r3 at minimum.  Stop wasting draft picks in r1 and r2 on wrs that don't work out. Rebuild the defense instead. 

We haven't had a defensive first Rounder in multiple years which is wild.

Honestly, they could probably find their #1WR in round 3 if they picked the right one. That #1 might not be an X, but he could be the guy other teams plan for. Gotta give up on this idea that a prototypical outside receiver is needed. What's weird is this organization's best X was a 5'9" 180lbs receiver. Arguably the best player we've ever had.

Considering Fitterer probably didn't have that much to do with the first class after he arrived, the guy really sucked as a GM.

As a first round draft pick, I expected much more from XL. Brooks was a second round pick they lit on fire. Finding Coker undrafted is the lightning this team lucks its way in to from time to time (Luvu, Smitty in the third, Norwell in FA, Jake, etc). I like smith-Wade and really like Sanders. 

so I’ll give this draft a D unless they find a way to parlay Brooks in to a decent draft pick from another team. I don’t think he plays a meaningful down here. No draft where first and second round picks are wiffs get better than a D. 

Teams that whiff repeatedly on first and/or second round picks … (like this team does)… they suck. And they stay awful until they accept just how devoid they are of real talent. At that point a new, smart, GM comes in and in 2 drafts, picking in the top 5, choosing the OBVIOUS BPA PICK… they now have legit, young, blue chip talent raising the level of play of the entire team. I can see how selling an owner on a BPA strategy would be hard to do.

Yep, and everyone saw that coming except the Panthers who traded away the future the year before.
