Skins release DT Anthony Montgomery...

I agree and disagree. Agree on the "budget", Fox has even said so. The guy got cut so, I don't think he can ask for too much.

I disagree that the FO will even look at him because in a snipet I read somewhere, part of the youth movement is molding players into the Panthers' scheme and not re-teaching FA players from other systems.

wouldn't you think if this were true we would have drafted a DT that fits the scheme instead of having a bunch a FA DT from other systems..lol

I like Meek's system but the small DT really only work if you have Peyton and the boys putting up 30 points and teams having too be in pass mode and shutting down the run. We still need 1 more big body so we can be prepared too shut down the run & the pass. We don't have the offense yet too make teams stop running on us.

All of those DTs were from last year. Even the LB in the Harris trade is from a Tampa 2 system in Chicago. I don't think Washington runs a Tampa 2, thus, we probably won't look at Montgomery.

Tampa 2 emphasizes pressure. Montgomery shows a knack for getting a significant push up the middle when given the opportunity, thus allowing the linebackers and DEs to attack. I think it would be a good fit.

hmm anyone else remember who exactly the skins brought in this year to replace him: ma'ake kemoeatu. this guy is taller but not better than kemo in the skins eyes (and most ever rational persons eyes). monty is a rotational guy at best right now, and a spot starter if leonard goes down and landri doesnt pan out. personally i would pass and keep looking. actually not surprised the skins would release a big bodied NT with kemo and haynesworth manning the NT spot. he was the odd man out for a few reasons ($ being one).

also the skins brought in adam carriker DE/DT, so again this guy was so highly though of the team got a lot of guys to push him out. not that he must be bad b/c of it, but i dont see the role for him other than a backup if poo hits the fan.

He's the odd man out because he's another DT like Haynesworth that doesn't really fit in a 3-4 scheme.

Our whole season depends on Louis Leonard, Ed Johnson, Tank Tyler, Nick Hayden and Corvey Irvin... I'd really like to see us bring in another guy like Montgomery to compete for a starting role.

people also tend to ignore Meeks literally had the best pass rushing DE (Freeney) in the NFL on his DL that didn't need much help from the DT spot. Pretty legit DE playing opposite him. That, combined w/ a higher powered pass offense makes it work.

Foxball is what goes on here. DL needs to be built like it always has for the most part here.

they were going to be moving montgomery to DE instead of having him play 3-4 NT.

him playing DE is a bit of a stretch but that is what they said they were going to do. he's just one of those guys that are a casualty of a 3-4 that we are going to be benefiting from (that is if he gets picked up). the more people you have competing for spots, the better the interior line will be.

i just wonder if the FO feels they have enough to work with. i hope not. after hearing what was going on with ed johnson i wouldn't be surprised for them to pick up a couple extra.

Dont see us picking up anybody. You can watch the guys get cut by other teams but we aren't going to add anyone unless we get into preseason and find we are getting gashed in the run or that our DTs suck. Otherwise who we have is who we are going with for better or worse. We wont be taking on any big salaries and yeah anything over a million bucks is a big salary for us.

Given who our DC is, I think there's a pretty decent chance of that happening.

As much as we cut this season, you would hope that we would have the permission to sign a few guys under a budget that is reasonable. Ant. Mont. would be great here and it would seem if this was last season we would sign him. He is younger, stronger and faster than Hollis Thomas who came in and really brought our run D together.

Oh well JR has to champion the "woes us our money is all gone"...part of the collective bargaining agreement.

I don't understand where people are getting the idea that Meeks is bringing in undersized DT's here. Louis Leonard is about 330lbs and Tank Tyler is listed at 6'2" and 306lbs. To put that in perspective, Meeks actually had a couple of DT's that were in the 270lb range at Indy. This is not the Colts defense and John Fox is not about to change his philosophy of stopping the run first.

Also, when the Panthers were getting gashed by the run early last season, it very well could have been more because they were still trying to learn the new defense (and several players mentioned this more than once) than any lack of size up front, although they did get better when Hollis Thomas came on board.
