Reason to be Optimistic about Re-Signing Our Players - Thomas Davis Story/Quote

Well, may have debunked my idea of letting all these guys walk to keep cutting costs, if so, I'm excited...

The Panthers aren't commenting on any negotiations with players who might hit the market next year, in part because of the uncertainty over CBA negotiations and what conditions might exist on the other side. But general manager Marty Hurney has said repeatedly he's maintained communications with the agents for players in those positions.

Davis grinned when asked what he's heard from the team.

"I've had some talks with people that I would say are very high up in the organization," he said with a giggle. "I feel pretty confident about me finishing my career as a Panther, but at the end of the day this is still a business."

This is a good thing for Davis. Of all the players going into a contract year, he was in the most precarious situation given his injuries over the past 2 seasons. I would have bet the Panthers let him walk since he'd been hurt and no one knows strong how he'll come back after not playing for 2 years. But if he stays and the Panthers can put him on the field, mo' better.

So he has spent about a year on IR from two leg injuries and he is hopeful about a contract extension?

Stop the presses.

Truth is he will be lucky to play anywhere.

Would you be after a LB that just spent a year on IR from two ACL tears? Nope.

He needs to resign at a reasonable contract with incentives. He is not worth top money at this point.

Yeah, I don't have a problem with giving him the incentive laden deal at all. It's in the team's best interest, especially if he comes back 100%.

I was just saying, I'm optimistic that they're continuing discussions with him about re-signing, b/c I was beginning to think that we were just going to let all of these top-level guys on expirings (DWill, Kalil, Marshall, TD) walk. Glad we're at least entertaining keeping them.

I would like the same question asked to who would be a heavily sought after free agent. I am not sure the review of the Panthers front office would be the same. TD knows his stock has fallen greatly. He is kissing the ass of the front office, is what it sounds like to me.

I'm hoping that Davis comes back but Dan Connor and James Anderson have given us a lot of leverage in that negotiation. We can either have the best 3 LBs and move Beason back to the middle or we can have a trio of really good LBs and keep it like it is...

Who knows though with the new coach we could be running a completely different scheme.

We should resign him but if he doesn't get back on the field this year...it's a big risk. Honestly with the play of James Anderson, give him the money and Davis can accept a low-ball or walk. Could be a bad move for us, but we really can't get any worse.

If Davis can come back 100% and a new Coach coming in next season we would be set in running a 3-4 defense next year. Connor and Beason in the middle and Anderson and Davis on the edges. Charles Johnson would excel as a DE in a 3-4 scheme. Hardy would need to put on a little more muscle and pounds to get the other DE spot. Brayton would be a great fit as well but he is getting older. Need to draft a big NT or find someone in free agency. Norewood would be a nice backup as an OLB. Everette Brown would be the odd man out. Not sure where he fit in a 3-4 defense. Not big enough as 3-4 DE and no coverage skills as an OLB.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
