Luck or AJ Green?

So my friend and I got into a heated argument during the panthers game today about who we should take should we get the first overall pick. I was in Luck's corner, and he in AJ's.

He said that Green is the clear choice for our team because Clausen is our future, he will be great, he just needs a good supporting cast around him. I argued that he already has a good supporting cast, the offense just looks like poo due to bad play calling and clausen looks like a deer in headlights under center. He then claimed that AJ Green was a once in a lifetime talent at WR and we need a WR more than a QB so heat can be taken off smith. I said that we drafted 3 already this past draft so it seems unnecessary to take another. He said it was unnecessary to take another QB then.

The entire argument seemed like he was being a huge homer, specifically when he claimed that luck is only a decent Pac-10 QB, and won't be an elite one in the NFL because he only plays in the Pac-10, but Clausen will... I called him a retard then named every good QB to ever come out of the Pac-10 in the history of the NFL.

but anyway, who do you think we need more and why, and who do you think the panthers will actually take if given the chance?

AJ Green should not be the #1, or #2 pick in my opinion, but I know he's good. Depends on what our new coach wants really. I would probably take luck if Clausen doesn't explode the rest of the year. I do not think we need Green and tbh I think we would be better off taking someone on the D end if not Luck

Your friend is a dumbass, by the way.

I think we're fine at WR, so I'd pass on Green. Being honest, I really really want Luck on this team. He just seems like the franchise QB that this team has been longing for, and I think he'd be too good to just pass up if we're given the opportunity to draft him. I'm tired of the mediocre, "game manager" QB that we're so used to. I want a guy like P Manning, Brady, or Rodgers, and I think Luck can be that guy. Plus, I'm not sold on Jimmy Checkdown.

Neither.

Theres not enough great O Linemen in this draft, so I wouldn't go there either.

I know our defense is light years ahead of the O at this point but I don't think that's really because of lack of personnel on offense. With a new coordinator they will be better. We have to take a DT(Dareus) or get Peterson and tell Marshall to F himself. He has not produced this year after all that whining he did in the offseason.

How many people are gonna make the same f**king thread?

in the last week, the need to get even younger in the passing game has taken precedence. I'm sure fans that make posts about next April's draft will have a lot of patience with even more players at the two positions least likely to pay off up front.

Ok, IMO here's the thing, do you think Clausen can be our Franchise QB?, right now I will say no, but with that said he could also turn out to be that QB. here's the thing, if we get a Franchise QB we are good for the next 10+ years. having a good QB can go a long way and is the most important player on the field whether you believe that or not, he makes the offenses world go round, look at both Mannings, Tom Brady, Big Ben, ect. those teams are contenders year in and year out in large part because of the QB.

that's why if you think you have a shot at a Franchise QB you take it, but with that said do you think Luck is the guy that can do it or is he just Alex Smith V2.0 where he's more thought of being the best QB in the draft instead of actually being worth the 1st pick? because honestly I don't watch a lot of College Football(in large part due to my Job, and the fact that I'm in Australia at the moment) but I never even heard of Luck till this season, so is he the real deal or just the best of what there is? now if you think he's the real deal, we take luck and trade Clausen for whatever we can get, some times there is a point were you cut your losses and go straight for what you need.

Now if you don't think that Luck is the Franchise player we are looking for then I think it's gotta be A.J Green we need a WR bad, Smith isn't getting any younger and honestly he's getting close to the age where he will nolonger be a true 1st option, so right now AJ Green is the player I want, not because I don't think we need a QB, just because I don't think Luck is the Answer.

now with all of that said, this is basically because I knew who AJ Green was last year and I didn't know who Luck was till this season. and I don't like chasing players with high picks that I didn't even know existed till a month and a half ago.

    • You absolutely can have hope. You can’t convert people though; making advocacy posts are kind of … not reading the room.   I had a small hope that he would be able to at least manage some games and that they could make it work in some kind of no fun to watch fashion.  But honestly I had 100% determined he was not NFL starter material, and I had conviction. So to root for him to marginally succeed goes against the best interest of the Panthers long term, according to my beliefs. I wanted him gone the minute he got here if I am honest. It was up to him to prove otherwise.  He has rarely shown me anything to think I was wrong on his ceiling.  He did show me some courage last year, standing in the pocket and stepping into his throw in the face of pressure - but that has gone somewhere. He made some nice throws last year in places too, but they invested in him on the level of the Atlanta game should be his norm. Good luck seeing that again on Sunday. Still, he did it once, so technically it could happen again.
    • Damn that was a longer post than I intended, Maybe I should have started a new thread.
    • On that TD, he sure didn't get any help from Scott at FS! While we're pointing out Blue Chips...Horn has proven to be a lock-down, (dare I say)elite CB and DB is one of the best at DT. Which brings me to a topic that has unfortunately been much on my mind lately...2026. Our important (IMO) FAs are: Rico Dowdle - As you pointed out, Etienne is developing nicely and Brooks is still untested potential, so not a big loss. Cade Mays and Brady Christensen - I think we can keep both without breaking the bank. BC tested the market this year and it was all but non-existent. He's a solid backup, but backup linemen don't get paid. Mayes is our only starter on the line who's a FA and he's technically not a starter. Corbett is a FA, but good riddance as far as I'm concerned. He stays hurt and can't snap the damn ball when he is healthy. Hunter Renfrow signed a 1 -year prove it deal, and will resign a team friendly deal again I think. He has repeatedly said that he only wants to play here and is Coker's backup anyway. DJ Wonnum - Solid mid-tier guy that I would like back, but is easily replaceable. I will not cry if he walks. Every other FA is bottom of the barrel roster fillers. As it stands now, we need (in order); QB, ILB, OL/DL depth, secondary depth. If we resign Mays, OL is in tact again and still pretty darned good. Horne, Jackson, and Smith-Wade are solid starters as are T-mac and Coker. We have some promising young WRs in Tremayne and Horn. I see us trying to get a FA Chain mover and/or resign Renfrow. RB room looks really good. TE is a conundrum, Tremble will never be a great pass catcher and Sanders will never be a great blocker. Evans is starting to show signs of life, but not enough to tell yet. This could be another spot we try to upgrade via free agency, having a proven TE could really help our rookie QB.
