mcdermott was a little overrated, esp. by us around here. only reason we had this guy so high up was because of what the eagles did to us on opening day in '09.

truth was, that wasn't his defense that did it. it was johnson's. as time went on, it became more mcdermott's defense and that is why you saw the fall.

I'm not a fan of McDermott's, never have been. Haven't really liked what I've seen his defenses do since he took over while Johnson was in the hospital. All this "he's a Jim Johnson disciple!" talk is meaningless, just because someone coached under someone good doesn't make them a good coach too. Look at all the failures who have come from the "Belichick tree".

With that said, as long as he's not a full time DC, meaning RR still controls it on game day with McD being more of an assistant DC, then sure bring him on. I'm sure he has SOMETHING to contribute. But I don't want him as a full DC.

McDermott does need work but not in learning the scheme of Jim Johnson. He needs work in tweeking the system to the personnel he has from year to year. In the games I watched Philly this year versus last, they played alot more cover 2 and zone versus the man aggressive scheme they ran in 2009. I think the personnel was not as good this year and he didn't make the adjustments.

Part of being a great DC is not Xs and Os so much as judging talent, moving things around and getting a feel for what to do when. I didn't see the Jim Johnson defense this year and I suspect it was because he didn't think this team could execute it well.

With that said I would hope he would open to making a switch and learning from one of the best. McDermott could be great in our system if given some direction and talented players. Our defensive talent right now especially at linebacker is much better than Philly right now.

bet Chargers fans are pissed they replaced Rivera already.

Nope, I loved the Manusky hire, it's been 4 years coming. Besides, I'm not sure how McD would convert to 3-4. Rivera at least had Cottrell to learn from.

Re: that tweet - 2 words: Ron Rivera. If McD doesn't mind Rivera having his hand in things early, then it might be a smart move. Defer to him early, but once things get going, take over more of the DC responsibility. And for the love of Zod, if he gets hired, don't go crazy and start putting Mc's in your screen name. Denver message boards are still recovering from the McDaniels fall out.

PFT reprinted some stuff from Mortensen on the topic.

Per Andy Reid, McDermott was essentially fired for not being Jim Johnson.

Reid said Johnson's shadow was "too large".

In response, McDermott reportedly said no one's shadow was larger than Reid's.

(not really, but that's probably what I would have said)
