Veteran QBs: Picking the right one

I think Moore is the backup plan if we can't sign who we want. But neither he or Pike will be here if we can find a veteran to come in and as DeAngelo said teach Newton the tricks. Given Moore hasn't worked with any of the coaches, he isn't the guy. But he could be the backup plan unless he gets an offer elsewhere and forces the Panthers hand. We have to flip or fly and make a choice,

Watched DeAngelo's U-Stream live tonight and he "threw us a bone" about the veteran quaterback. He said "This is all I'm going to tell you guys, and I'm not going to re-visit it so listen."

And then he went on to give a few clues about who we might bring in.

--We are definitely bringing in a vet to mentor Cam (he mentioned Cam specifically, and not Clausen)

--He said it's going to be/got to be a quarterback familiar with the offensive system, so think of Chud and the offense we'll be running.

--He then said that two guys' names should come to mind and that neither one of them is necessarily a high-profile guy. I don't know which two in particular he was talking about, though. And he wouldn't elaborate.

DeAngelo was suprised when people asked him about Jake coming back. He said "where is all this stuff about Jake coming from?" and people explained that Ryan Kalil started it on Twitter, but based on DeAngelo's reaction alone, I'm not convinced that Jake is one of the vets he has in mind.

Take it FWIW.

But from the info DeAngelo was giving out, I think he's either talking to people in the organization (but he outright said he's not becuase they aren't allowed to and it's against the law) or he's just talking out of his ass.

Moore is not a veteran and also has not been successful. Why on Earth do you want him as a tutor for Cam? I don't want a young back-up because 99% of the young QBs still think they have a chance to start. I would rather have an old dude that is happy playing back-up and has had success as a starter but is at the end of his career.

Someone mentioned Pennington and that would be perfect. I know he said he was taking a year off (I believe) but someone that can come in and play a couple games if you need him and has been successful would be ideal.

Okay...Okay... I'll play you guys' silly little game. I thought about making this a thread just to piss people off but I'll just post it on here. I'm sure it's already been mentioned. To tell the truth I don't think it has and I just woke up and am too lazy to do a search...

Say it is Derek Anderson... If it is, then you have to believe that he would probably lobby to bring in Braylon Edwards... I don't think that would be a stretch at all either. Chud would support it. What do u all think? Might as well stir the pot... Ain't shyit else going on.

Many times a quarterback's physical skills start to wane just as their understanding of the game and defenses expands. They know exactly what to do the ball but can't always make the throws or stay healthy. Their value to a team is more in what they know than whether or not they can be a long term starter. To that end both Volek and Anderson would be very valuable to the organization and not a distraction as Newton develops. Just watching film together and pointing out the nuances of the game will be invaluable to Newton over time. Neither Volek or Anderson would be valuable as long-term starters but they surely would be valuable to our franchise over the next season or two.

Admittedly neither of them have much to merit them as a starter and there are other guys I like better but given the lack of time to learn Chud's system we likely need someone who can come in right away and play.

    • I agree Tepper completely bumbled everything after purchasing the Panthers. Kept Rivera and Hurney too long, including letting Hurney last into Matt Rhule’s tenure instead of hiring a GM to hire the head coach, and then hiring Matt Rhule and giving him way too much power, then keeping him into year 3. For all the reputation Tepper has as having too quick of a trigger finger with coaches/GMs, it is entirely unwarranted. 2 out of 3 head coaches and GMs he kept too long. That being said, it would have all probably ended up fine if Matt Rhule had not been a complete egotistical idiot who felt the need to piss all over everything about the franchise to mark his territory. All he had to do was keep Cam on the last year of his contract, listen to 1st round draft genius Marty Hurney and go up and get Justin Herbert, and not trade for reclamation project QBs every year. And now hearing poo like this, how about not run your star RB in goal line drills his first practice back from injury. I wish Matt Rhule nothing but the worst in his coaching career because it was his hubris and arrogance that led to all of this.
    • Chris Paul Jr should be high on the list. He might be able to start by mid-season (time to pick up the defense). He's already better at beating/shedding blocks than any other ILB on the roster.  So tired of watching guys run into OGs and play push with them. Beat the friggin block so you can make a friggin tackle!------- Please!
    • Sir, the Panthers are not going to have a winning season this year. They're too young/inexperienced at the skill positions. I'd say 2026 is the season for winning expectations. This year is for development.
