Rapid Reports: Panthers have interviewed Skipper

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I think this was a "well, we tried" move just to show the guys that they tried. I think they want to move in a new direction. its been evident for a while now.

yea but he's got a very good resume for training running backs that goes way beyond his tenure here

of course leave it to fox to want to hire him to do something else lol just roflmfao

Something to think about...

The original impression everyone had was that team officials - primarily Marty Hurney - would be closely overseeing the interview process. Some even speculated that Rivera might not get his choice of hires.

But now, Marty Hurney is in Alabama and Ron Rivera is doing his own interviewing.

So has Rivera already earned the team's trust?

The Panthers are expected to hire position coaches for running backs, receivers, tight ends, defensive line and linebackers, and are expected to add a few lower-level assistants, including an assistant offensive line coach.

Man.....I'm glad Rivera is doing his own interviews on one hand. On the other hand, Hurney is down in Alabama on his own? Any 1-AA project converts we should be aware of?

Could be Fontenot, maybe Harold Goodwin, maybe someone else...

should be noted Gantt has been saying all along Skipper isn't coming back... so not surprised he is saying it's unlikely.

too bad though.

I'm not expecting it, but in fairness there were rumblings that we shouldn't expect to get Chudzinski either.

Perhaps they let Chico interview Skip since they know him already and he could make his own assessment? Or perhaps Hurney was just going to oversee the big jobs like coordinators? Good insight as usual Mr.Scot.

From the Observer...

Rivera is expected to conduct a few more staff interviews Tuesday before joining general manager Marty Hurney in Mobile, Ala. for Senior Bowl practices.

The Panthers are expected to hire position coaches for running backs, receivers, tight ends, defensive line and linebackers, and are expected to add a few lower-level assistants, including an assistant offensive line coach.

Sounds to me like he's on his own. And I'm actually fairly happy with that.

I'd agree it might come down to the final decision on Skipper being in his hands. And worth noting that even if we offer, Skipper might not take it.

I think, from reading the Observer article, that Rivera just wanted to pick his brain. Skipper was the asst. head coach and obviously knew the run of the place. Good move by Rivera just to talk to him. I'm sure the RB's were happy to hear he was getting interviewed but from the article it doesn't look like he's coming back.

Edit - Think this says it all:

Skipper said Monday afternoon he thought the meeting with Rivera went well, as they spent "a good bit of time," going over the team's personnel and scheme. However, a league source said the Panthers have planned more interviews for the vacant position, and that the Panthers gave Skipper little indication he was a legitimate candidate for the job.
