Yasinskas: Is Newton's Past An Issue For Panthers?

Are you going to give up on Newton if he struggles (as almost all rookie QBs do) the way you did Claussen? Then what?

Good point.

Reverse things: FWIW, if you put Newton under center with 2 rookie WRs, 3 reserve linemen blocking (2 7th rounders and an undrafted free agent), he would SUCK!! And if JC were coming out this season, he would be the TOP-RANKED QB in the draft and you all would be screaming for him.

Truth.

Plz don't draft a QB Carolina, we are just loaded at that position. We just can not possibly use anymore help there.

Please do the right thing for the long term success of the franchise, Carolina, and don't get sucked into the hype of a 1-year wonder, simple offense running, QB with more question marks than character points.

Please make sure you watch game film and not highlight reels to make your decision.

Please make sure that we don't give $55 million over 4 years to a player that we need to groom for 2 years to prepare for the NFL, only to have him go to the highest bidder in free agency in an attempt to get to a bigger market to appease his father.

or the "Pro Cam" perspective:

Please understand that $55 million will make him no longer have to attend college so there will be no need to cheat, that millions of dollars will make him ethical because rich people don't have stolen laptops, and please understand that Cam can finally pay his father the $180K he so much deserves for being such a great role model.

Please understand that controversy is free publicity, and Cam seems to have it wherever he goes. Please convert investigative reports on ESPN and other major networks and equate the air time to advertising costs. Cam will keep the Panthers logo and face on the news constantly!

I don't think it's a matter of giving up on Clausen.

It's understanding that some players have more physical gifts than others and more ability to slide and move in the pocket; bigger stature to see over the line and thus the passing lanes, a bigger arm to make tight throws. I'll take a QB in the modern league who can win with both his legs or arms over one who can just stand as a statue.

..and I am someone who liked Clausen in college...watched all the ND games, was excited to have him here. Again, I am greatly bothered that when all the stars aligned, and he had the opportunity to complete a pass, he didn't. He could not physically make the throw. That is a real concern to me as either he does not have the physical ability or the mechanics, or the confidence at the NFL level.

...as Steve Smith said, 'this isn't ND anymore'.

We do have a true QB coach now and I'm sure he and Rivera and Hurney have watch the film and I'll guarantee you the decision has been made as the tape does not lie.

I would honestly feel a lot better if Hurney were not involved...of course, he could trade the number 1 pick for the VA Tech QB as he might make a good slot receiver and we need one.

Yes - according to the majority on this board if you are not successful your first year in the NFL as a starter you are a failure. All the statistics and experts state otherwise, but they don't know anything and get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars because they don't know what they are talking about. However, most on this board that have probably never played a down in football know how to pick talent and evaluate after watching tape on you tube.

Clausen was never going to keep the Panthers from drafting Luck, so why should he keep us from drafting Newton? If he can't handle the competition, then he's not the right guy anyway. There is no law that says we can't still root for Clausen, regardless of what the Panthers do either, so for me anyway, hate has nothing to do with it.

I hope that they are doing their due diligence and turning up every stone. Before we decide whether we want to draft him, we need to know everything we can.
agreed, but they also need to really consider if the stuff that happened in florida is consistent through the rest of his life. if all of his trouble is confined to those couple years in gainesville, then they need to consider that his mistakes were confined to a small part of his life and not emblematic of the whole and it was the result of a young kid on his own for the first time making mistakes that he moved on from.

It's very possible they think Clausen has a better chance in this league than Newton (but imo kinda unlikely at this point). There is also a chance they think he would be less of an upgrade than getting one of the other top talents would be (possible). Finally, Luck was just a different sort of prospect than anyone else in this draft... or so everyone was saying.

Just say no.

how about fug no.

I would love him mid-late first and a second to go with him though.

As far as character I really don't care, I did much stupider poo. People grow up, they mature and eventually given they didn't do something sadistic you get over it. What Newton did tells me about his age and mindset but not really character.

Nobody has faced more scrutiny than Newton. If you gave the same amount of scrutiny to some of the other front runners you'll likely find more.

Newton will be top five not middle or late first, not happening. The kid is #1 on at least 6 teams boards.

I agree with this Luck and Cam are not the same prospect.

    • I had started typing my post hours ago and didn’t finish it and just came back to finish it, posted it, then saw yours and saw we were pretty much saying the same thing - even the games that stick out to us most.  I don’t think a lot of people remember that SF playoff game, but I felt like I had just got mugged in broad daylight.  I remember them calling Mitchell for unnecessary roughness, and then I remember watching Boldin take a super late cheap shot, dead in front of the ref and then showing him watching the whole thing in replay…  the refs let them have a fuging field day and didn’t do jack poo, but if we so much as breathed the wrong way it was fuging 15 yards.  Each team playing under two completely different sets of rules.  poo hurt.  I was enraged.  I’ve never went back to watch either that game or SB50 and never will.  fuging robbery.
    • I’ve said it a million times since, but it’s impossible to keep them from affecting the game.  In SB50, they literally took the game from us, and they did it early.  Cotchery’s no-catch?  The miraculous amount of times we converted for a first down only to have it suddenly called back make it a 3rd down and 15+ against the best defense in the league that specialized in rushing the passer and man coverage on the back end?  And you do that enough times, you kill the morale and confidence of the team you’re doing it against.  It’s telling the one team “you can do whatever with impunity” and the other “you can’t do whatever they’re allowed to do.”  It changes the aggression level.  It essentially neuters one team and allows the other to do whatever the fug they want.  Imagine you call the police for help and they get there and tell you to sit still while the other party beats the poo out of you and you can’t defend yourself.  That’s what the officials do.  There is no way to avoid them affecting the game.  And more often than not, it’s the most subjective calls they use to do so.  Even in SB50…  you saw the Broncos commit more egregious penalties than anything we did, and barely any of it was called.  Their OL was holding all fuging game and the refs did nothing.  We already had our work cut out for us against two future HOF edge rushers and the refs played to their advantage with that.  From what I remember, both Oher and Remmers were called for holding at various times and their hands were in the INSIDE of the defender.  It was garbage, but all by design. Also, if there is any video of it anywhere, go look at what the refs did against us back in 2013 against SF.  The fix was in there too.  They stepped in early and often and ensured we knew we were not allowed to play with the same aggression or intensity SF was.  It was disgusting as well. at this point, I hope Vince McMahon, errr, I mean Goodell just finally scripts us to win it, because this poo is not won via competition or off merit.
    • You can go back to the New York Knicks somehow getting Patrick Ewing.  I saw a story where they place the New York Knick card in the freezer right before the drawing.  It was simple.  Show everyone the cards are undetectable to the human eye.  All they had to do was grab the coldest card. IMO ever since Goodell took over the NFL it has been fishy.  Patriots winning the SB after 9/11, New Orleans after Katrina and Peyton Manning's going away gift against us. The terrible calls during that game were blatantly one sided.  New England should have been stripped of their first 3 SB when they were caught spying on the other team in their SB wins.  I think the evidence against the Patriots was so damning Goodell felt it could ruin football and they brushed it under the table.   In the 2004 SB, How did we go from practically no yards in the first Quarter to setting a record in the 3rd Qtr.  Dan Henning changes the game plan.  IMO probably the greatest half time adjustment of all time.
