No 51?

it's retired so it's not even an option. I think other franchises have un-retired numbers, a practice I don't necessarily agree with.

or 90, our other gold jacket legend

I have less of an issue with 90 being used since Peppers left on his own and spent almost half his career playing for other teams.  He "only" had 81 sacks here before he left for Chicago, and yes I know he came back to add 16 more in those final two years, but he's not a HOFer if you remove his Chicago and GB years.

Luke played his entire HOF career here and then retired, Cam and Smitty were cut after long HOF caliber careers here despite neither wanting to leave.

And while I know you can use my same argument against Peppers against Smitty, as he wouldn't eventually end up in the HOF (and he will) without his stats from his Baltimore years, again, we forced him out when he didn't want to leave and his stats in those years were the icing on the HOF cake he baked while in Carolina.

Probably unpopular but I’m honestly not a fan of retiring numbers.  Although I guess players have more to choose from now with the restrictions lifted.

Me too, position groups can already only pick in certain ranges and people just rolled out 5 numbers that shouldn't be allowed.  It wouldn't take long before there aren't enough numbers.

Yankees and Celtics are extreme examples, but I don't think you can be a single digit Yankee anymore.

I liked teppers question about how many Pittsburg Steelers have their numbers retired.....

Im old school about numbers, 33 on an edge pass rusher should be a arrestable offence...

The policy has changed consistently through time. Originally linebackers could wear any number because they typically played offense and defense.

So this is old school AF

huh?

They mostly eliminated position groups needing to pick certain numbers a few years ago.

OL and maybe QB's are the only ones who need to have numbers in a certain range now, everyone else can take whatever number they want except I think the 60's and 70's which are only allowed for linemen.

Which then certainly makes it easier for teams to have a handful of numbers retired without causing any issues.

So still to me... 1, 59, and 89 should never be worn again and then I like the idea someone else had in the thread where 58 is now a LB only number and needs TD's approval for them to wear, but I'd like to see it become a Panthers tradition for great LB's to wear 58 and pass it along.

Good point, I overlooked the old old old school.

    • I did not want to start or even think about *if* BY reverts back to pre-non last 9 games.   There is a lane in which Panthers are looking QB after this season, I feel its higher than most will realize. I mean....not kidding... has any team ever traded up to 1st overall twice in the teams history? I don't even want to think within 3 years, just foresee Tepper squeezing Dans and Brandts sacs to the point were they are forced to trade up for a another savior.....   The kicker is I feel this way with BY playing good-great..... I think there with be non-fixable problems for contract negotiations between BY&reps vs Panthers org on the whole. You can not pay 50+ million per over few years with 70% guarantees for 3,303 yards 15 TDs and 9 INTs......Cursed I tell you....
    • It's not surprising, but it's still surprising that many of these guys don't manage their money in such a way that provides them and their families a better lifestyle than most for the rest of their lives without even working a nine-to-five. I can't imagine making over a 100 mil for a decade and ultimately ruminating about supporting my family due to financial issues.
    • That why i mentioned the KC dynasty. Those three different playoff loses were not Allens fault, in fact 1-2 plays and Bills win. KC just have better players and better coaches and more luck.  Defense-wise, Bills have been trying to crack the Reid-Halhomes magic. Its near impossible with rules and KC home field advantage. Spags has started to force the league in naming him the best DC in NFL history. I agree if you take away Bill bielacheat.... Add in Andy Reid the best QB coach and brilliant play designer/play-caller, I mean that's too much for one QB to over-come on his own.  Just trolling or not, bad is bad scot. Allen is legit as any one QB has ever been.
