What I meant was Pittman is OK. Getting over 1100 yards took him 156 targets and that was his best year. JJ made Darnold look like a HOFer. JJ with Darnold had 2 less targets than Pittman yet he had over 1500 yards and 10 TDs. Mike Evans didn’t skip a beat with Winston or Mayfield.

At pick 8, Michael Pittman results is not enough. Robbie Anderson had almost 1100 yards as WR2 with Teddy. If TMac is just Pittman, he’s a big disappointment. We need a top WR not a yardage accumulator due to large target numbers.

Darnold was more than JJ. It was O’Connell’s scheme with a solid OL and having possibly the best WR to pair with Addison was just bonus. If you are expecting JJ with every top 10 WR prepare for some disappointment. We need some franchise players to build around right now. Pittman would probably be our best WR since Smith? I mean Moose broke 1000 yards 3 out of his 14 years and he is considered our 2nd best WR. I know offenses are more pass happy now but just giving some perspective. I’ll take a young 1000 yard WR and try to put him in a consistent offense with good QB play and he should have some great production.

Winston or Mayfield would easily be the best QB Pittman has ever had. Winston can put up the numbers his issue is turnovers. Pittman has been playing with trash. I'm not saying the guy is elite. I'm just saying I'd like to see what he could do with a legit starting caliber QB.

Let me set your mind at ease then, T-Mac is that guy you've been wanting, he's going to be a stud Top 10 WR who is in the discussion as a Top 5 guy during his prime.

I'll also make this prediction, as a rookie, T-Mac will have more TDs than Pittman has had in any season in his career.  He's had 6, 4 twice, 3, and 1 TD in his 5 seasons, I think T-Mac makes a serious push for 10 as a rookie, he's going to be a redzone monster with his size and hands.

I really hope so. I really do. We need that.

For the others, I didn’t realize I posted in the Michael Pittman fan club forum. Pittman’s 17 game average is 88-974 and 4TDs on 130 targets as the WR1 for a bunch of vets and Richardson. KB’s 17 game average is 58-842 and 6TDs on 114 targets including some awful play with Buffalo and KC. Sorry, Pittman is a decent 2nd round pick but his results would be a disappointment for TMac at pick 8. Simple as that.

I see this type of sentiment often, especially in regards to Bryce.

But for the life of me, I cannot find anywhere that lists the expected statistical performances for each draft pick to be considered "worth it." I can find trade values, I can find contract values, and I can even find data that shows the chances of success for different positions taken at different times during the draft.

But I cannot find anything that states what a player should put up at the very least to be considered worth the selection.

Which also begs the question... if a player was traded up for, does the value of those picks given and the supposed statistical baseline added to where they were drafted? For example, if Chicago had drafted Bryce and his career arc was identical without trading the pick away, is there now a lower baseline for him to have to hit? Does Bryce have to do more than Cam because Cam wasn't traded up for?

I'm sure folks can point at recent stat lines and say "Better than that!" but when I've had this same convo in the past it turns into less stable fans getting nasty when they realize that there isn't really a statistical baseline that they're pounding the table for. 😛

WTF was all of this. We haven’t won more than 7 games since 2017. We are way past some sort of statistical analysis. You are thinking way too hard to try to make it seem like we’ve gotten enough out of our draft picks. If you want to bring Young into the equation, for what we have up for him, 171 yards per game (38th) and 15 TDs (23rd, only ahead of backups/injured) is not good enough. He has to reach further to have been worth it.

Amazing that it’s up for debate that we need our top 10 picks to turn into top 5/10 guys at their position in order for our talent level to get to playoff contention. It’s not rocket science to see where our bad drafting has gotten us and that our talent level needs a TMac to be a stud. I don’t want to be a mediocre team anymore. I don’t want to wonder how good a non-pro bowl level player could be for us.

So what are the statistical baselines that players need to hit based on their draft position?

I'm not debating that teams want their first round picks to make an impact. I'm just asking for simple numbers and whether or not trading up means that a player has to produce more.

The Panthers are simply not a team that drafts well overall. It's unfortunate but it's the reality we are living.

As far as trading up. That's only one layer. But expectations for the top draft slot have always been in the stratosphere. Every single first overall pick has practically had the weight of the world put on them in terms of expectations. It's always been that way. And no Bryce Young does not have to do more than Cam Newton. He does not possess the sheer phsyical talent of Cam. But he does or so we were told countless times supposedly possess the brain of a smaller Peyton Manning. Elite processing. That was supposed to be his super power. What separates him from other QB's. So far unfortunately in his third season the best we can say on that is we don't know. And that in itself is a big problem.

Hey @frankwand @Icege, how about y'all do us all a favor and put each other on ignore? Thanks.

Weird to resurrect the thread for that, but way ahead of you:

Now if somebody quotes something he posts and I think it's deserving of a poo react, then I'm going to give him a poo react rather than continuing arguments. 😛

Curious to both sides this though. I'm not going out of my way to shitpost any thread he's in nor immediately making things personal over a disagreement about the team. That's what people have been talking about in regards to mod behavior in the new reclaiming thread or whatever it's called.

“From what I’ve seen, he should have been drafted.” - #Panthers Pro Bowl CB Jaycee Horn on Corey Thornton.

I’m late, by Thornton looks like an old Seattle DB. He’s going to be a problem for the NFL. Won’t get the recognition he deserves from anyone but PFF but he’s going to have a great year. Calling it now. When Horn inevitably misses 10 games, Thornton going to come in and make Horn a trade asset.

Two true Super Processors that I know of were Andrew Luck and Luke Kuechly. I don’t think even Manning was to Luck’s level.

Let’s remember another thing, Tom Brady took Hogan, Amendola, Edelnut, and Gronkowski to a Super Bowl. Made it look like it was 1947 out there. I don’t know if he was a super processor but he was like a coach on the field.

I cannot stand the Patriots or Brady but you are correct about this.

I don't know man. Those receivers don't get enough credit. They were dawgs! All of them. All they did was be where they were supposed to be, when they were supposed to be there. And they caught the ball - every time. And Gronk may be the best TE I've ever seen. Dude was an absolute MONSTER! Couple that with a top defense and Brady was never in a bad spot. He was definitely the catalyst, but he was rarely in a bad situation.

Aaron Rodgers might be one as well.  I know he is polarizing but his mind/memory is pretty insane.  I know he had several MVP years were he lit it up with very few turnovers as well.  I think he has a photographic memory.

    • If we pay Bryce like a franchise QB we're completely and utterly buttfuged.
    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
    • If everything played out and that last thing happened, I probably just quit.
