sleeper who is getting some buzz....

Fernando Mendoza  QB   Indiana
Height: 6 - 5 |Weight: 225 lbs |RAS: N/A

Fernando Mendoza could be a potential first overall pick in waiting, and the leap could be coming at Indiana. At 6'5", 225 pounds, Mendoza has the ideal prototypical frame, along with quick feet, nimble pocket mobility, and understated creation capacity and off-script feel. He's a crisp rotational and consistent areal thrower who flashes high-end situational precision and layering ability. Even beyond that, he has the rifle arm strength and keen anticipation to make NFL-level throws. There's a definite degree of arm arrogance in Mendoza's game that he'll have to tamp down, in order to minimize unnecessary risks and forced throws. Nevertheless, he has all the physical and mental tools to catalyze a rise as a franchise QB candidate.

McShay loves this kid. I've already looked at some of his tape.  He's got all the tools, but not elite...yet.  One thing he has you can't coach is size.  He's still young and developing.  Indiana has a tall order in the Big 10 this season, so there should be a lot of tape on him in the coming months against some really good teams.

None of them seem to be a sure fire number one at this time. That worries me to no end. Landing on qb or really any position is so hit/miss. Problem is unlike most positions you cant really fix this problem with free agency. The other issue is you cant afford to wait because without a qb, a season is pointless.

See the game yesterday?  Dude is talented, but dude is VERY raw.  Struggled against a small program.  He either needs to stay in school or sit a year in the NFL.

I'd be fully on board with drafting Sellers and sitting him for a year if necessary. Get a veteran who can start during his rookie year and let him learn. He's got elite potential.

This mock draft has us picking Sellers

5. Carolina Panthers: LaNorris Sellers, QB, South Carolina, 6-3, 240

Bryce Young could still turn things around and guide the Panthers to a respectable season, but an ugly Week 1 loss to Jacksonville hardly inspires confidence. Sellers would be a popular local pick, and he offers a tantalizing combination of size, arm and mobility that could have Panthers fans (and scouts) remembering Cam Newton’s glory days.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
