How I play the team rebuild and Bryce Young if I was the GM

1) The biggest elephant in the room is Bryce Young. Even if he turns it around the second half of the season, I don't think you can waste another year on him. He would absolutely have to show out and I still wouldn't pick up his 5th year. That being said, I would sign a vet who can run the full Canales offense and draft someone in the 1st. My picks here are Jamies cheap from the Giants, do it before the trade deadline when other teams have their guys go down. In the draft I'm looking at Nussmier. He has one of the best arms in CFB, can make every throw, and is a "gun slinger" type. If he was not injured he is going top 3 this year, I think with his injury and down year we could get him around 7-10 where we most likely are picking. His injury is seriously impacting his ability downfield to make those great deep shots he hit regularly last year. Everything I know about an ab/obllique injury is you can play through it and it is not a serious or lingering issue. There are other QBs here I like as well but think will be gone by the time we pick, I don't expect us to be picking top 5 this year. Jameis/Nuss lets Canales run his full playbook and neither of those guys are scared to throw interceptions and will push throws where they are supposed to go. Probably would be frustrating with growing pains, but the polar opposite of the last 3 years.

2) Go find the best ex HC as your next DC. There has been a trend the past few years of defensive HC's getting fired and going on to be super star DCs. Saleh this year and he's killing it for the 49ers with no Bosa and a bunch of young guys (and older Warner). Candidates this year that are realistic and few but I think Aaron Glenn and Jonathan Gannon are both potential options. Glenn prob gets a second year unless they go 0-17 but Gannon has been there 3 years and would be a great get for us. Extreme longshot could be Ryans but I think is extremely unlikely he gets let go with 1 bad season unless CJ just regresses again exponentially this year. Tepper will need to open the checkbook here, which he has shown he doesn't hesitate to do.

3) Draft PFF again. I know PFF get's a lot of hate on here but I can't remember a draft we have gotten so much NFL level production on returns this early. TMac and Scourton both look to be the real deal. Princely is flashing (think he has our 1 sack?) and needs to get bigger to play the run. Etienne, Ransom, and Evans are all contributing where I would deem above their draft grade. Jackson doesn't show up on the stat sheets and JHJ haven't played yet but those late draft guys are more flyers than anything. I'm going QB first round, MLB, S, or OLB second round, and then BPA the remaining players based on the PFF scoring. I think QB and one more piece on D that is a plug and play starter we need to reach, but the rest of the roster needs so many upgrades just get BPA.

4) Sign one more starting WR and starting OL. Yes, putting more into the WR group will suck but it's clear XL won't be the WR2 we hoped. Coker is iffy with constant injuries. Moore is probably gone and JHJ/Renfrow aren't #2s. If we are going to invest in another 1st round QB, surround him with talent from the beginning. TMac + an avg FA #2 vet + Coker/Renfrow/JHJ is an okay room. Same applies to OL. T- lose Nijman, resign Brady, Moton isn't going anywhere, pay Ickey. Lose Zavala, Hunt and Lewis aren't going anywhere. You need at least 1 more NFL quality guard, pay the money and find one. We STILL won't be paying QB anything so just pony up and protect your next guy.

If this draft class turns out to be decent. Dan should get canned and Tillis promoted. (since no real GMs would be likely to interview here.)

Is he a personnel guy? That would be interesting to try

Switch back to the 4-3. If for no other reason than historically we have been better able to find players that fit the scheme more ideally.

Build the lines on both sides. Yes, taking O and D linemen is not splashy. It pays off in the long run.

If there is not a qb that has the potential to be the one, don't spend premium picks just to say we drafted a franchise qb.

Bring in a vet qb that is capable and ready to play on day 1. Doesn't matter if Young is being kept, or there is a rookie being drafted. No more Daltons.

Develop a team identity, culture and recognize there is a timeline and plan to getting back on track. Don't be fooled into thinking a good start or a better than expected year means we are 1 player away. We are not 1 player away. Patience, and stick to the plan.

Be judicious on trading picks. Teams that are contenders can trade picks around, because they are good enough to absorb the loss of potential players for immediate gain. That is not us.

    • okay I found this and it sounds like my hopes for the first surgery being not such a great job seems like it could be actual reality.  I only hoped because that would give a better chance for recovery and ia a possible scenario so I just thought it could be possible. Had no real evidence of it. But I’ll be damned.    This is a detailed report of Brooks’ surgery and the condition of his knee after the failed repair.     https://x.com/jmthrivept/status/2055743129408704806?s= Sparked by some very good questions by @CoachspeakIndex, here’s some info on Jonathon Brooks: 1. Speculation that the first graft/ACLR by Dr. Cooper didn’t “take” or at least was too lax, leading to failure and re-tear. Brooks dealt with issues cutting, progressing in his rehab into the early stages of 2024 and then re-tore it late 2024, requiring a second ACLR in January 2025 (essentially revision). Notably, CAR prolonged Brooks’ rehab process through Sept-Oct due to issues progressing into the next stages of rehab. 2. Second surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, who has extensive experience with revisions. He did a double bundle technique, harvesting graft from Brooks’ left patellar tendon and a strip of his right IT Band (his right patellar tendon had been utilized for the prior graft in 2023. The double bundle technique significantly increases rotational stability of the knee, leading to a stronger and more secure graft/reconstruction. Also to note, Brooks’ surgery wasn’t significantly delayed, meaning that the tunnels from his prior ACLR were in good shape and they didn’t need to perform bone grafts to fill in (would have delayed 2nd surgery by 5-6 months). Essentially, reading the tea leaves tells me that everything else except for the graft itself was still in good quality within his knee. Good sign for future.  3. Typically, you see a performance increase anywhere from 16-20 months post-revision. Brooks will be ~21 months out from his second surgery by the time Week 1 hits. His knee should be more stable and stronger this time around, with adequate time for healing and return to all movement patterns. I’m not viewing this situation as a typical “Player __ had TWO ACL tears, he’s cooked” situation. Rather, I’m viewing it as the first procedure failed, but the second procedure is significantly stronger and should allow him to return to form this time around. I don’t know why it posted as a link but there it is.
    • Jackie, any more reps tomorrow, or is that it for this session?  thanks for the work
    • How can you say they aren’t trying to win now with all the moves made in free agency? Or is trading first round picks the only way to be win now? I’d be fine never trading another first round pick again, win now be damned.
