ESPN's Benjamin Solak on Panthers QB situation

Recommended Posts

Carolina will almost certainly pursue a quarterback alternative this offseason. It probably won't fully punt on Young, as he's still on a cheap contract and not prohibitively bad at the position, as shown by the Panthers' 5-5 record this season. (Dave Canales really is doing a wonderful coaching job, if you ask me.)

I don't think you'll get Trevor Lawrence out of Jacksonville, but the idea of a veteran retread for Carolina is extremely attractive to me. As was well covered when he was hired, Canales was part of Geno Smith's rehabilitation in Seattle and Baker Mayfield's in Tampa Bay. This offense is plug-and-play ready for a functional veteran, with a strong offensive line and a budding elite receiver in Tetairoa McMillan.

Kyler Murray is the obvious name for this upcoming offseason, as his time in Arizona seems all but over. You know who loves to funnel targets to a star No. 1 receiver and has the sort of pocket fearlessness that Smith and Mayfield both displayed? Mac Jones.

Is he under contract with the 49ers in 2026? Yes. But we'll cross that bridge when we get there. He would be a good fit.

Not taking anyone seriously that leans into Murray being a fix. Mac Jones would be fine in free agency but not in a trade IMO.

I just want to see who is available and what Young does once they tell him mm they aren't picking up his 5th year option. Im still hoping he ask for a trade and we can all close out that chapter of pain.

Tell me you don’t watch the Panthers yet have to churn out content.

Bryce not that bad….because Carolina has managed to win a couple really odd ball games where he was largely a spectator?

Still intrigued about giving Trey Lance a shot.  He will be a FA and not too expensive.

See that sounds a lot more approachable. Still not sold on him but taking a long look should absolutely be on the table. I also think he will do another prove it deal to earn a spot

    • The answer is simple and there for anyone who has actually been realistically assessing the situation from the jump. So look you have to start at the beginning. Bryce Young in college made plays yes. But he also played for Alabama under the modern GOAT coach. And even there when they were destroying smaller schools ultimately Bryce Young did not establish a consistent and successful deep passing game. Between him Tua and Mac Jones he had a drastically inferior deep ball. Fast forward to the NFL. He's had some nice throws here and there virtually all of them have been within the intermediate range. But he has not at any point showcased an ability to consistently go deep let alone become one of the better QB's at it which should be expected for his draft slot. And even those games at the end of last year his best game was against Atlanta where he did most of his work with his legs and he actually had several rushing touchdowns in that stretch of games. All of which opened a door for me IMO to question the sustainability of it. We drafted him to be a passer. We need him to win as a passer and more often than not that is what is going to be required of him. Now here we are reaching the midway point of his third season and he is now at 39 or 40 games and there are people who supposedly have functioning brains that are acting as if Canales is the one intentionally eliminating half the field. Yes he deserves criticism for different things but come on. We said all these things about Frank Reich too. Once you get to coaching staff number two it's time to say okay if it looks like a duck quacks like a duck and walks like a duck. It's a motherfưcking duck alright? The worst thing the Panthers staff and FO can do is continue going around like Helen fưcking Keller acting as if acknowledging the elephant in the room which is the reality that Bryce Young is not a franchise QB and not the answer and never will be will end in the universe swallowing itself and ending humanity. Nut up swallow that lump in your throat and put one foot in front of the other.
    • Two nights ago the Canes were second behind NJD in points, tied in point percentage. Right now before the game they are still second behind NJD in points (a game behind) and ahead in point percentage. Tonight can make Canes the point leader in the Metro, which was my point. .;)
