ESPN's Benjamin Solak on Panthers QB situation

His biggest problem was he was a one system, one year starting RSO at powerhouse DII school before declaring for the draft.  All of that worked to his disadvantage.  No idea how to work in a different system, started just one season (plus one more game) for ND St. who steamrolled over all the competition. While he was blowing out teams, it was DII talent after all.

He honestly had zero business declaring for the draft.  He clearly was not even close to being ready for the NFL, let alone a NFL blueblood like the 49ers with an offensive minded HC expecting nothing but excellence out of his QBs.  To top it off, he got hurt early in the season and struggled to get healthy.  So yeah, he got a raw deal, but I'm willing to bet the QB he is now is not remotely the QB the 49ers kicked to the curb so early in his career.

I mean he fits a profile. Can’t be that expensive. I am open to possibilities.  Just don’t make him the ONE possibility and I would have no issue with seeing what we can see.

I get it, turn over every rock.  I'm just saying out of the usual suspects like Garner Minshew, look at a dude that most people have turned the page on already.

That is where you could find a ton of value. Guys that people gave up on early. It wasn’t 40 fuging games early. They got very few games - or practices some of them. Oops  like when Decca records told the Beatles no, that “guitar bands are going out of style” lol.

Johnny Unitas. Look up his history. And it was much simpler back then. The history is a great story and plenty of others have similar ones.

I read that writer’s take after Bryce was benched last year and he was slamming the team for Bryce’s trouble.
That didn’t age well at all IMO. First he claimed it was over here and proceeded to lambast Tepper. Of course it isn’t Bryce not taking the coaching (footwork, 123 plant throw in 2.7 secs, etc). Never that. Last year and in 2023.

We hash out mo better insight right here than these national writers. But it was interesting to see.

.

That's because the national guys pay less attention to the team than the half checked out Panthers fans. Sounds like some David Newton quality content right there.

100% Trey Lance is exactly who I would go after and bring in to compete with Bryce in the offseason.

He would flat out beat Bryce out for the starting spot.  Not a doubt in my mind.

I don’t want anyone to compete with Bryce. I want Bryce gone from here, never to drag down our offense again. I can’t take another season of him on this team.

I get it but I doubt they are going to trade him this offseason.  I want him gone as well.  Just rip the band aid off.

The fact that anyone in our fan base had this thought is exhibit A of just how bad our QB situation is.

We're spitballing in the cruddy muck.  I'm throwing out names like Stetson Bennett, Jarrett Stidham, lol, you've got Lance, Levis talk, Davis Mills, etc. etc.

We're truly scraping anywhere and everywhere for ideas.

A crazy indictment for how truly bad he's been.

exchange one midget for the other...makes sense.  5'10 qbs don't make it in the nfl... number one analytic..doug flutie was the best....and hes doing testosterone commercials now...

Don't forget Drew Brees. He was the exception to the rule.

Listened to Brugler a bit this morning on tAFS who always has a bit of tea with midseason scouting.

Scouts are viewing 2026 as a 2 QB class right now - Simpson & Mendoza

Other notes:

  • Sellers is this lingering "TBD" that could go top-20, but could also stay in school for more NIL..he has options.  More refined than AR coming in, but could benefit him to wait.
  • Dante Moore sounds very likely to return to school
  • Stock on Pause: Leavitt and Mateer's injuries put a pause on their assessments
  • Stock Down: Nuss & Allar have fallen off radars with their seasons. Nuss was high on scout lists but things really took a dive this season.
  • Watch for: Jayden Maiava who could be a 2nd type & Brendan Sorsby 3rd/4th (& rising) but he could go back to school and transfer

With CLE, NYJ, NO & LVR ahead of us (for now), not likely we land one in R1.

Probably looking the vet route and a mid-round flier IMO.

I know his stock is down, but id still take a flier on Nuss in the 2nd or 3rd. He has the traits and has shown he can play. Not sure what happened this year.

    • This is huge may not be a trap game but this plays a major part in what they want to do. If we can get some pressure on Sam we know what he does with pressure coming hit and heavy. Also we may be able to take the top off their defense a backup safety trying to stop TMac or Cooker over the top or forcing him to play the backend should allow us to run the ball somewhat effectively. Either they allow some runs or we take some shots and if Bryce and whoever can connect deep we’ll be in business for another big time win against a top notch opponent. Might not be a trap game but health travel game plans all play a major role in each weeks game plan and this week might be leaving our way. We’re missing some replaceable pieces they’re missing key anchors to the offense and defense major difference time to solidly ourselves at one of the top teams in the nfc tomorrow fellas buckle up.
    • Yes.  If I am not mistaken, we need to sign Coker to the ERFA tender and insist that XL spends his spring and summer at a WR camp and not Coon huntin on his four wheeler.  XL was raw when we picked him--which is why I wanted to go another direction--and we are seeing how raw.  He is basically learning a position.     The Panthers will make their move in 2026 to be an NFL powerhouse behind Bryce.  Bryce needs intelligent WRs who catch the ball.  That said, we need a solid #2 to challenge XL and make cutting him easy, if necessary.  A #2 WR (intented to be a #1 by now) with under 400 yards is embarrassing.   On offense, you have to ask, "Where can we get better?"  In my view, #2 WR, TE (although they are improving) and maybe C (again, if we re-sign Mays, he is trending up and at 26, entering his prime--I say stay with him and find competition later in the draft (not good for C).  OL depth maybe?  In other words, XL is a glaring weak spot.
