ESPN's Benjamin Solak on Panthers QB situation

He's started 5 games guys...FIVE! Spot duty in another 8.  How in the world can anyone definitely say he sucks?  Just because 49ers fans soured on him and said he sucks after an injury riddled rookie season and being behind the learning curve.

The dude has been in the League 4 years and is 25-years old!  He's Penix age now when Penix was a rookie.  He's been in multiple systems now, healthy and obviously has a better feel for the Pro game than he did as a super-raw rookie.

According to both Lynch and Shanahan. Both men said Trey Lance expressed his desire for a fresh start and a better opportunity elsewhere. Just 2 1/2 years after the 49ers made a huge investment in Lance, the Cowboys acquired him for, comparatively, a minimal commitment.

Trey Lance, like most NFL QB's, wants to be a starter and in my opinion is better than a whole lot of NFL QB's that are starting now.

Lance has the misfortune to be placed behind high salary, good QB's that  the team desires to stick with. If the Panthers are smart enough to obtain him, he can replace Bryce Young and take the Panthers to a much higher level ( Think Playoffs ) than Young ever could.

I'll sign two vets ala what the Giants did have a honest assessment and competition ala Indy witn Jones and Richardson and let the best man win.

My picks Howell, Hineke, Brisset, Bridgewater, Mac Jones, Winston

Trey Lance beat out Taylor Heinicke  for the L.A. Chargers back up QB postion behind Justin Herbert during the preseason. Trey is only 25 and would be better, in my opinion,  than Brisset, Bridgewater, Mac Jones or Winston.

Lance would be an interesting pick up.  After being a backup for several years he's probably matured.  It's just a matter of whether he can lead a team without terrible mistakes that he had with the 49ers.

Heinicke to me falls into the gamer/gameday category.  The type that looks better on gameday than in a practice week.

Dudes just going to find a way to make some random plays.  The every day consistency or in game consistency just isn't going to be there.

Listened to Brugler a bit this morning on tAFS who always has a bit of tea with midseason scouting.

Scouts are viewing 2026 as a 2 QB class right now - Simpson & Mendoza

Other notes:

  • Sellers is this lingering "TBD" that could go top-20, but could also stay in school for more NIL..he has options.  More refined than AR coming in, but could benefit him to wait.
  • Dante Moore sounds very likely to return to school
  • Stock on Pause: Leavitt and Mateer's injuries put a pause on their assessments
  • Stock Down: Nuss & Allar have fallen off radars with their seasons. Nuss was high on scout lists but things really took a dive this season.
  • Watch for: Jayden Maiava who could be a 2nd type & Brendan Sorsby 3rd/4th (& rising) but he could go back to school and transfer

With CLE, NYJ, NO & LVR ahead of us (for now), not likely we land one in R1.

Probably looking the vet route and a mid-round flier IMO.

I'd take nuss in the second and not look back.  Kelly really effed this season up not nuss

Mistakes? He barely played?

I would be fine with Trey Lance and a rookie QB. That we are to the point of welcoming Trey Lance with open arms and all but offering him a key to the city shows just how downbad the Panthers front office has made this fanbase that has already suffered through going on what will likely be 8 consecutive losing seasons. Unforgivable.

I would honestly love to see what Dave could do with Trey Lance.

Trey Lance is an upcoming free agent, I will lose all cnfidence in the Panthers if they don't sign him and sign him quickly.

Trey Lance's draft projection was No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, a projection that was met with near-unanimous agreement among analysts. He was the third quarterback taken in the first round, after Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson, and was considered a top-five prospect with the potential for a high ceiling.
  • Draft position: Selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
  • Overall ranking: Considered a top-five prospect and one of the best quarterbacks in the highly-touted 2021 draft class.
  • Strengths: Praised for his size, arm strength, and mobility, with analysts noting his high ceiling as a player.
  • Areas for growth: Identified as a raw talent with limited starting experience, suggesting a need for development and time to acclimate to the NFL.

    • Absent proof that he absolutely  concurred 100% with his superior, there is nothing that can change my opinion.  Also, I would appreciate it if you would not lay the motivation for that opinion on wanting Morgan to succeed because he is an ex Panther. I do want hi. To succeed because of that and just because he is the GM of my favorite team, but I have enough independent thinking ability to separate my feelings down what Insee.    I said many times before Morgan ever made GM or before Bryce was chosen that I could not believe and ex player could endorse that decision. I was speaking of Reich but also a MLB? Really? I feel like any ex high level defensive guy would be salivating at the prospect  of facing a Bryce in a game.   Whether an ex Panther, a Giant, a Buc, whatever jersey they wore.
    • Years ago there use to be a website called Cold Hard Football Facts.com. I used to hang out there to read the articles and their interpretation of the football data. After the midseason point, when teams had generated enough data to set trends, these guys could predict the winner of game 75% of the time using nothing but statistical data. They said the single most important piece of data for passing efficiency is Yards per attempt. "I think" they said any team at 7.0 yds/attempt or higher would usually be among the top 10 teams in the NFL year in and year out if even if they only had an average defense. The lower the number, the least successful the team. https://www.espn.com/nfl/stats/team/_/view/offense/stat/passing/table/passing/sort/yardsPerPassAttempt/dir/desc If you toggle the column and arrange it from best to worst the data clearly proves their point. Nearly every team above 7.0 this season (16 in all)  has a strong chance of making the playoffs with the possible exceptions of Washington and Dallas. Washington has been decimated by injuries this year and Dak's excellent season is being overlooked because the Cowboy defense can't stop anyone in 2025. The teams below 7.0 are clearly the tier 2 and tier 3 teams in the NFL with the exception of Denver which is currently sitting atop the AFC West at 8-2.
