You are aware I am very bearish on the QB position as it stands now but I also think there are bones there for a good offense. I am sure you are also aware that I also think we have one of the worst OC's in the NFL, so that is a limiting factor too.

If TMac continues to develop, the sky is the limit. He could be a Hopkins/Fitzgerald type of player for us.

Coker has a much lower ceiling but let's say it peaks at(who I think is an excellent comp) Jacobi Meyers. A crafty, excellent route running possession WR that will be a dependable option on 3rd downs and be enough of a threat to allow your deep threats to run free.

I do think we should continue to try to upgrade the WR corps. Tremayne and Horn Jr. could be something but having a true #2 or #3 guy could elevate us to a top 10 WR corps for a long time. This should be something we should be pursuing in the draft/free agency over the next couple of offseasons.

Another reason I dislike Canales. His personnel management makes me miss Ron Rivera and his awful roster management.

Yeah I'm still not sure about Canales' play calling but I'll give him another season.

Still can't quite figure out why you think Young won't work out. His numbers with Theilen are as good as any QB Theien's ever had - including the three games he has started with Rogers this year. Cokers' numbers are as good as Theilens and he is an UDFA and TMac is in the run for ORTY with Young as his QB. Young's throwing more accurately now (from 21.5% in 23 to 16.5% this year) and he has shown he can make the throws in clutch moments. If you take into account he was saddled with XL, Chark, Mingo and Johnson for receivers at one point, had a coaching staff his first year that didn't want him and a current coach who is suspect at play calling, I'm not sure he has been as bad as people here say. I know he has had terrible moments/games but most qb's still on their rookie contract will.

Anyway, had to give my weekly BY plug. Guess I thought this was the perfect time lol.

what are they gonna get?  a 2048 7th rounder?

Just keep him, hes cheap, maybe he can become something.  Prob not but they are not gonna get anything for him so might as well be patient and see if the light comes on.  Sometimes WRs to figure it out in year 3.

Yeah he is sunk cost. No point in not seeing if he can be of help. I think he can be.
If he wasn’t aware of his weak hold on the starting spot, he is now
Competition for snaps is what we need to have in all the rooms.

Bro if there is one thing we know for sure its that his awareness is nonexistent.  I feel bad for him.  Has all the tools except the one that matters most... a brain.

He got the wake-up call. We’ll see if he can answer.

I fear that he won’t but we need depth and backups too. He can do that.
He can have a good game we have seen it.

Good to see merit winning out here.

Maybe XL roars back or finds him a place in the third WR spot.

He's got some serious competition for it though with Horn, Jr. and Tremayne. And you can't tell me that David Moore doesn't know how to fight and compete for a roster spot.

Work, man. Woulda been easier for him out of the gate rather than here at the end of the season.

If Moore is back, XL will drop to 4th and backup to Coker. Probably best for now that'll give him favorable match ups inside the numbers. Keep that dude away from the sidelines.

Coker is our new Moose.

Reliable, chain mover that can put up yards and get in the end zone. Not going to be a WR1 nor blow your doors off with speed, but a steady force that will make defenses pay if given targets.

If we view him as our WR2 in the draft of 2024and XL as the “other” WR, it’s a little less painful how poorly XL has fallen short of expectations.

Hell, I hope Horn Jr gets in on XL’s target share too. Maybe XL comes into camp next year with a chip on his shoulder…..AJ Brown took a couple years to figure it out. I hope XL does and it’s here, not elsewhere.

I really, really agree with this. Why do you have a big, athletic guy with reach competing with the sidelines when he could do a better job in the center of the field or running the opposite seam to the TE?

That and a lack of situational awareness there. He's just better when he has room to operate and not have to think about too many things at once. Catch the ball, then run to daylight. Keep it simple and plain.

Fuchess 2.0

Mingo 2.0

It’s like these two had a baby and it was XL.

You know how smitty played much bigger than he actually was? Funchess is the smallest 6’4” wr that’s ever put on a uniform. Zero ball skills. Zero ability to catch a contested catch. I still remember that saints game that he lost for us by jumping to try and catch a ball that was chest high.

I wear the term "WR extremist" with (perhaps a perverse) pride ever since @tiger7_88 called me that, so it didn't escape me that you left out day 1, but just like with T-mac, all I can say is "BPA," brother. I kinda hope it's a legit pass rusher, but if not, then I will not be mad at a WR (or pass catching TE).

I am not ruling it out in a Day 1 scenario but it would have to be a BPA thing and a lot closer to a sure thing/TMac than XL. Especially when the type of player we are talking about is often found outside Day 1.

    • If we pay Bryce like a franchise QB we're completely and utterly buttfuged.
    • In my view, the realistic expectation for this team to compete will start 2027.  At that time, I think we could be looking at the following (this is HIGHLY speculative):   QB:  You know, Bryce.  I am not a fan, but they don't ask me.  But there is reason for hope--and here it is.  Bryce will be entering his prime.  Since we are likely to pay him, there will be changes that I include throughout this exercise--I realistically speculate on what they are going to do with Bryce and then I realistically speculate on what means in terms of the cap and other positions. Bryce HAS IMPROVED.  The idea is that if you give him more weapons and protection, that will continue.  His career:   At this rate, if his growth continues, by 2027 we should expect nearly 30 TDs and about 12 Interceptions and a Rating of about 98.  His completion percentage should settle at 65-66% or so.  If that happens, you can win with it. The following stats demonstrate how the Panthers will be able to afford it (and re-sign Ickey) My guess is they will require about $60m per year. This is why rookies who can play are important.  It also helps us see the blueprint.  You may disagree, but this is the cruel realities of the salary cap. Robert Hunt:  Cut post June 1 and save $19m.  Who do you replace him with?  Ickey. Tershawn Wharton:  Cutting him saves nearly $15m.  We should all hope to see Aaron Hall (UDFA) make the roster and play well.  Regardless, this is a position we would likely have to address in the next draft. Trevin Moehrig:  Cutting Moehrig as the starting SS saves this team $16.5m.   Ransom will be on year 3 of a cheap rookie deal and should be more than ready to take the reins.  their styles are similar.  Furthermore, FS Wheatley (R, 4th round) will be starting. Taylor Moton:  So much depends on his knee, but I have an idea that he can play another 3 years.  extending him could save the team about $5m per year.  Cutting him outright would save the team about $21m. In the most drastic situation, we have to cut Moton and the other three players mentioned.   We would need (in all likelihood) a starting DT and RT.  It is possible that the DE would be addressed, but Wharton's production (so far) could be equaled by a rookie.  Look for a cut free agent and a 2027 draft pick here.  If you cut Moton, you save $21m, and that would be the only big hole to fill.  Having Ickey at RG gives you some depth at T, and Ickey could be the guy.  T could be pick in the 2027 draft (first round), fwiw.  It saves you $21m while costing you $5m, for example. We get younger, creating a core of Freeling, Hecht, and the RT first rounder in 2027) along with Ekownu (second contract in the $15m range, and Lewis, whose contract would be in the $16m range if not extended.)  The OL cuts (Hunt, Moton) would save $40m.  The OL would get younger and still solid with veterans at G.   By cutting Wharton (no brainer if his play stays the same) and Moehrig (good player--but we have Ransom on a rookie contract who would not be that much of a drop off--if any) in addition to Hunt and Moton, we would save over $70m in cap room. We would be able to give Bryce bag  and we would have enough to re-sign Ickey (if the knee is not too risky) to a Guard contract (probably at a discount, coming off that injury).  Furthermore, we could add a RT in the draft (or a RG if Ickey moves to RT) and that would be the only large hole to fill. Correct my logic if you see issues-- On defense, in addition to the aforementioned, Scott ($2m contract) is out, replaced by a 4th round rookie contract. CB Jackson's contract ($7.8m) expires and he is (possibly) replaced by a rookie contract.  At Edge, patrick Jones II's $10m contract expires and he is likely a reserve, and his role is absorbed by Phillips, Scourton, Princely, and possible an UDFA like Isaiah Smith or a 2027 draft pick.   These productive developmental players over the past 2 drafts will pay huge dividends.  On paper, I see the team getting much younger and possibly better while cutting nearly $100m and reallocating that money to get more production.
    • If everything played out and that last thing happened, I probably just quit.
