3rd and long efficiency

Yeah, on D, no pass rush makes that almost inevitable.  It doesn't matter how good the back side of the D is. Almost any QB in the league can find a rcvr if he's not pressured.  Hopefully, that will be Priority One this offseason and we'll also see progress from last year's draft picks.

On O, it does seem that we almost don't have a plan when we get behind schedule.  I know sacks and penalties derail many drives for all teams, but it seems like getting behind the sticks is almost a guarantee that on 3rd down we'll need 11 yards and do a check down pass to get 3 of them.  So, what's the solution?

Yeah 3rd down in general for this team on both sides of the ball is an absolute house of horrors.

And if our offense is on the field and it's anything more than a 3rd and 5 forget it.

This would be way more meaningful if it included only the games in which the panthers played.  It's a cool graph but it includes too much data to make anything other than general conclusions about a single team.

Example :  Our defense failure rate (38%) is higher than the best offenses (SF) win rate (37%).

Seems like it's a bad thing if your defense fails more than even the best offense succeeds.

True! I think this is why we didn’t let them get to a 3rd down on our final defensive stand. 😀

Yep, being the team that goes for it on 4th down the most is NOT a good stat. Good teams seldom get to 4th down.

All year long it reminded me of Washington last year. Constantly going for it (and getting it) on 4th down.  It worked...until it didn't this year and Jayden was hurt. Washington got exposed for being a bad team that got lucky this year.

That...does not make me feel good going into next year unless we see some changes.

I don't think the "good teams don't go for it on 4th down" is ALWAYS accurate. Some of this is newer football philosophical changes. Look at the Lions, for instance. They are always in the top 10 for most 4th down attempts under Dan Campbell.

I will say that it does say a lot that the Panthers have been inside the top 10 in 4th down attempts every year except 2018 and 2021 since Tepper has been the owner. All losing seasons......
