Adam Schefter: Panthers getting trade calls for Andy Dalton

I'm shocked. Didn't see this coming.

Tough day for the "nothing will ever change Morgan is a moron" crowd.  Morgan sees what we see.  Dalton is out, a higher quality vet will be signed and a development rookie drafted late or UDFA in April.  Stuck with Bryce for 2 seasons, unless 1 of the TBD vet or rookie stands out and Bryce is "hurt" before then.

Franchise QB swing in 28.

We need to hope they don’t wait. Lot of guys hitting the draft for 2027. You give them a year behind Bryce who can either become the bridge or he can hold out, whatever.

A lot depends on Bryce and what he can do with year 4. If he doesn’t provide definitive beyond a doubt notice that he is the guy, you can’t just keep on with giving him the next year.

They could absolutely pull the trigger on the future in 27. My point is I believe Dan is looking to upgrade when the time is right, and the thought we'll give Bryce a max contract after year 5 because Tepper told him to is stupid.

Well as one of his biggest and longest non believers (pun intended), he has risen to a level that is acceptable if he can roll that out every week. But it only happened infrequently. And I am still not in love with it, he is limited physically and will always be limited. Acceptable though.

A duffer can go out and golf on Saturday is likely to have a few really good shots. So why can’t all his shots be good? It is hard.
It isn’t that hard to have some success in spurts. The trick is keeping it going.

How many good games would he have to turn in to earn an extension? I would have a hard time coming up with 6 that meet a high standard from 2025.

So, 8? I am no. Don’t have three more years for him to figure out how to get to 12 or 13.

Double them? I might bite. Depending on the insanity of the annual pay.

And then I thought about it. 12 games is only 2/3rds. I believe I would want more for an extension that paid him market value.

ESPN’s David Newton reports the Panthers “plan” to move on from Andy Dalton
Newton adds “even if it means releasing Dalton and leaving $3.83 million in dead cap money.” Things really crashed down hard from the Andy Dalton Combine “getting calls” experience. Dalton, who turns 39 in October, likely proved that he just wasn’t a good enough backup last year in his start against the Bills to keep paying a premium on. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Panthers cut him.

Andy Dalton is a nice guy... But we aren't running a charity here. It's about damn time!

Here's a VERY fun thread to revisit.

On a rookie contract? Sure. Paying him $50M+ a year? That'd be a noose around our neck.

However, those numbers aren't exactly stellar by NFL quarterbacking standards. Even though the Panthers backdoored their way into the postseason in 2025 as NFC South champions with an 8-9 record, Young's performance was up-and-down.
