Meditation: Reading Morgan,Reasons to bypass Edge and More

Relax. Burn some lilac and honeysuckle incense sticks--waft them.  Breathe deeply. Sit with your legs crossed and hold your hands away from your bodies and open them while connecting your thumbs and middle fingers.  Close your eyes, then open them to read this.

Some random, radical thoughts that may contradict your calcifying opinions of what the Panthers need to do--No.  do not lock in.  Not yet.  As birds know when to migrate to more hospitable climates, you will know when it is time to start thinking that your opinion is all that matters and anyone who disagrees with you is stupid.  Avoid that pitfall for now.

MORGAN'S APPROACH TO THIS ROSTER RIGHT NOW.  Morgan's strategy for re-signing our free agents is clear.  "If you love something, set it free..." Morgan is letting Mays, Rozeboom, Nijman, Rico, Wonnum, etc. enter free agency.  If they return, they do so on team-friendly deals.

Edge is not as big a need as we think. WHAT? AM I CRAZY? Clear your minds of it.  Scourton and Princely will no longer be rookies.  Our starting Edge players (Wonnum and Jones LL) missed a combined 22 games in 2025--of course we struggled to pressure the passer.  Secondly, we did not have LBs that were a real threat to blitz.  Rozeboom?  Wallace?  Puhleeze. More importantly, Wharton, the 5 tech who was supposed to pressure the passer from the inside, sucked a lot.  Our two top DTs were not really known for rushing the passer (A'shawn had 5 sacks in 2014, but for his career, averaged 1.5 per season.  Brown has averaged about 2 sacks per season).  Wharton was supposed to bring pressure from the DT position after sacking the QB 6.5 times for KC in 2024.  So maybe another edge is not the best way to address the problem.  SUMMARY:  improve the ILB play, improve pressure at DT, get a veteran back from IR, and allow your 2025 rookies to improve.  Here is my idea:

  • Move up in round 2 and draft Jake Golday (Cincinnati, 6'3", 240 lbs): A flexible defender with experience as a pass-rushing defensive end, capable of filling hybrid roles.  (If Golday can slide out and rush the passer from a 9 tech or provide pressure from the 5 to free the nine from the WILL LB position, we could take a lot of pressure off the edges)

OT:  There are five I would take (realistically after the top 10 run is over) so move back in round 1 and up in round 2:  Proctor (I am warming up to him), Lomu (going to be good), Freeling (this should be the guy we target), and Iheanachor--all project to be solid starters in the NFL--trade back and take the best of these.

We KNOW we need a starting SAFETY. The draft seems loaded at S in terms of talent.  Working with Jackson and Horn (CB) and Moehrig (SS), I think FS is the missing piece.

So, based on my mood now:

  • 1st TACKLE Trade back and take an OT--sign Nijman or a vet tackle to take the pressure off, but these OTs can start in a pinch.
  • 2nd:  LINEBACKER Trade up and take Golday OLB--if we can't trade back in round 1, and this is my plan, I might take Golday at 19 and hope one of the OTs falls to 51--hope not, but you never know.
  • 3rd:  SAFETY Free Safety:  I think we can take a player like LSU's Haulcy (who will drop to the third, imo) or Clark (who might even be there in the fourth) who can start.
  • 4th:  QUARTERBACK: There could be some hidden, depressed talent to open day 3.  If you get rid of Dalton, or not, here is where you grab some fallen, unloved stock.
  • 5th: WIDE RECEIVER--Pretty deep. Give XL a last chance but groom his replacement.
  • 6th:  CENTER--there are some solid OTs whose arms were too short.  They can be coverted to centers and have superior athleticism.  Find a smart one and take him to groom.
  • 7th: BPA
  • FREE AGENCY:  INSIDE LB, CENTER, Depth

If they are going to trade up let it be in the 2nd round for Hill. But I don't like that idea either. What I would selfishly like to see happen is they take the Oregon safety in the 1st over the 3rd or 4th best ILB or OLB. Then see how round 2 shakes out. Take the linebacker with the 70's mustache in the 3rd and go from there. Production is the word you are looking for.

If his approach to Mays and Nijman specifically means we will be using those resources to go hard on the defense then I am for it. But we cannot revert back to treating Center as an afterthought again otherwise he is going to find out the hard way the same as Fitterer did and Dan was here by his side to see that unfold firsthand.

Plotting out a draft plan to take specific positions by round sounds like some fever dream perfect poo storm of past Panthers GMs.

Tells me, after watching Morgan, that we will see a very active FA period trying to get us to taking BPA. At the very least day 1.

edit: Dan doesn’t seem to be too worried about the cap. I believe a direct quote from McAfee is “you can always make money” when asked about the available cap.

Cap keeps going up every year. A salary now that is very high will probably be average in three to four years so I won’t sweat that stuff too much.

I like the idea that if we have an opportunity to trade back due to a QB or maybe a really good WR falling that we do it and get some better value a little lower and at the same time have ammo to move up in the second. I don’t like where we are sitting there.
I’d at least like to move ahead of Atlanta and TB in round 2. If we could swing it.

The cost would be too much to jump Atl and TB so just stay put. The LB class is deep this year so I'm not worried so much in that regard. We will just have to see how it shakes out. We will have a shot at a good player in my view but it all depends on what position starts a run on players. It will not be qb this year. My fear it will be defensive players this year after what Seattle was able to accomplish with their last 2 drafts. That will limit our options in the 1st round if it were to play out that way. Let all pray for a wr run before our pick.

According to the trade value chart I looked at 51 is 390. 100 gets you to 41. Even ahead of NO.

19 is worth 875. We could pick up 95 points going from 19 to just 22.

Math isn’t my strong point but that says, think again.

Happy to consult another chart I know they vary.

We have free agency coming up that will shape draft needs. The brunt of their draft work is just beginning.

Well we don’t have anything to talk about so…..

Combine and free agency are front and center. Just hard to get too serious about predicting  the draft before those things are wrapped up and we see what they are doing in terms of visits.

Read what you wrote again.
The combine is all about the players who will be in the draft. It is going to generate draft talk by its very nature.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
