A number of gurus here are convinced Howell is a Pro Bowler just waiting for an opportunity. If only Roseman had an eye for talent...

Nah. We just recognize that he has more potential than Dalton or Pickett. Do I think he could come in and potentially push Bryce. Sure. Not because he's a QB god but because Bryce really is that bad as a starting QB.

He’s being paid commensurate with names such as Sam Ehlinger, Nick Mullens, Tommy Devito, and Drew Lock (who he couldn’t beat for a backup spot) to compete with Joe Milton for a chance just to hold a clipboard in Dallas. Every team who has employed him has parted with him, in all cases since Washington for less than they paid to acquire him. Sorry, but 32 teams think he is a complete scrub after multiple teams having him in their programs and giving him a chance to beat out their backups. I think most people would be fine kicking the tires for whatever, it’s just that there are a number of posters having a conniption about signing Kenny Pickett and saying the team needs to sign names such as Sam Howell or Trey Lance to prove they are serious about improving QB play. It just makes no sense.

There is one QB on the Sam Darnold track though, if there is one: Justin Fields. Top 10(ish) pick drafted to a bad situation, 3 years on the team that drafted them then traded to another bad situation, spend 2 more seasons in bad qb situations, then goes to a team with a QB guru coach and WB friendly offense to be a backup. The equivalent of Darnold’s Minnesota season would be next season for Fields. We’ll see.

People take a young guy whose team was surrounded by more talent that the opposition 95% of the time in college, put him on a bad NFL team in his early 20s, and suddenly, he sucks.  People develop at different rates.  My experience is that success is usually determined by the system of support as much as anything else.  When the coaches are desperate, the team is underqualified, and the fan base is brutally impatient and critical, I can see a player failing to reach expectations.

You think if Bryce has been drafted in the same spot as Howell he wouldn't be among those same names? The only reason he is starting right now is where he is drafted. 5th rounder. He's cut year one after that debacle. After being benched year 2, he's not getting another opportunity as a QB1, he's probably cut rather than benched. Other teams move on from QBs that produce like Bryce has. Carolina fans want to induct him into the HoF. It's mind boggling to celebrate not even reaching mediocrity.

It's the same old same old with that lot. The same people who bash Sam Howell also bashed Caleb Williams. But they'll still make excuses for their guy Bryce after 50+ career starts. Even now in year 4 there will still be people here and across the fanbase that will seek to reset the clock so to speak on Bryce between games. Just wildly hypocritical.

I genuinely do not care who is our QB as long as they are producing at a mid to upper starting NFL QB level. If we do not have that, we should be looking for it. I care about one thing, winning. And it's been 8 damn years and counting since we've had a winning season.

For those saying we did some amazing fleece job by selling off Dalton for a 7th, we had to buy that god awful QB contract first to even be able to sell him off. And it's not like it was ever a good signing anyway, because Dalton had already proved his time as a viable backup was over the year before. For all the good things Dan has done this and last off season, the moves regarding the QB room make zero sense at all.

Dalton never should have been a Panther to begin with. When the reviled Saints discarded him that should have been a glaring sign for any competent franchise but nope. And we gave him two contracts. Not even Marty Hurney would have done that ffs.

Even though Morgan is a former Panther and he's certainly a likeable guy it's quite awkward to try and reconcile his talk of wanting dawgs and also us having standards and expectations for every position except starting quarterback. The good thing is more people are starting to wake up and take notice. If our upcoming season goes down the drain due to the QB not being able to get it done then the FO deserves all the smoke.

You could just as easily turn that around. Imagine drafting a guy number 1 overall, because he surrounded by more talent than 95% of the opposition that he played in college, put him on a bad team facing opposition that is at least equal to or better than his offensive talent, and believing he is going to not only excel from day 1, but that he is going to be able to lead an offense at a top NFL level at playoff contender level. I don't think the expectations are too high. The top QB prospect should be able to at least have back to back games where he looks like a NFL QB. We haven't seen that in 3 years.

I knew I'd find a debate about Howell here, given that Andy fuging Dalton is replacing the guy that beat him out.

There's something teams do not like about Howell.  This board has always sold him as a sort of poor mans Jameis Winston, and perhaps teams are too concerned with his propensity to turn the ball over.

I wonder if he's bad in the film room or something?  Ah well, not our problem.

Potential is meaningless until it's realized. A year ago this class was supposed to be loaded. Now look at them.

Last season most of these guys that were eligible were RSOs, JRs and JRs. The unknown was who many were going back. The answer was 99%.  Could some return for '28? Sure. It won't be 99% like this time.  I think the only RSOs were Moore and Sellers.  Moore would have arguably been QB1 this time around.  No way he stays again.  Sellers could depend on how good of a season he has and his projected draft grade.  Teh rest of those guys will be coming out save a horrid season
