I'd agree both Moore and Clausen are question marks, but so are the potential draftees.

I don't want to add any more question marks into the mix. We've got enough punctuation as it is.

Adding billy volek or anystop gap at this point will add the same question marks. Volek hasn't proven he's a starter, who knows what palmers got let in the tank. You can basically apply either of those negatives to any vet we can aquire.

I'd rather go with a "potential" franchise quarterback over waiting on the next perfect quarterback to fall into our lap. I don't see how drafting anything on defense helps us win "next year". And unless we have the number one pick next year we won't be any closer to andrew luck or insert your idea of the perfect QB prospect.

you don't always get the perfect pitch and you don't hit homeruns without swinging.

While I am not one to usually support what I call a John Gruden tactic and stock piling QBs, I think this year I am okay with it. I am pretty sure that Newton and Gabbert are for real just don't know when they will turn the corner but I doubt it is 2011. A guy like Palmer or Volek is really a one year deal or two. We still need a guy for the future. Moore has a better track record than Clausen but honestly I was really negatively surprised at how poorly he played so his stock went down in my book. And really Clausen was the most disappointing. While the book isn't totally written on him yet it wasn't the rookie mistakes so much as the lack of leadership and intangibles which I think you either have or you don't. He doesn't.

I understand your stance and you are surely not alone in feeling that way. I think Hurney agrees with you.

But the reason I am in favor of drafting Gabbert or Newton is that they both would be a serious upgrade at QB and I think we have to find our guy. Between all of them we will find our franchise guy and be set for the next decade. Seems a small price to pay.

Most of the discussion seems about whether to take a veteran or a draft pick if we go quarterback. Frankly if we can find a vet that we can afford we need to consider both a vet and a draft pick. One for 2011 and the other for down the road. Until we find our franchise guy we need to make sure we do everything we can to have more than 1 legitimate choice or even two. No Pike isn't a choice and Moore and Clausen are both big question marks.

I think with the absence of a CBA in place we will be more likely to draft a QB and sign a stop gap qb like Voleck. If you take Hurney at his word stating the QB is our greatest need our options are slim without a CBA in place. The real question is do they feel they can develope Newton or Gabbert over the course of a year or do they think they can develope Clausen or Moore? My gut feeling is the longer the CBA drags out the more likely they will draft a QB with the 1st pick.I do not see a real vote of confidense in Clausen as being the guy they feel they can develope to lead the team. The players have to have confidense in the QB and throwing Clausen to the wolves may have ruined his chances of commanding respect.

The big question mark with drafting a QB is what do we do with Pike? I know this seems like a forgone conclusion, but he is a very talented QB who was a little unlucky in not being able to attend offseason workouts and what not, so his first snaps under center were pretty much at training camp. That being said it looks like QB is a better option than anyone not named Dareus.

It is hard to comment on Pike because he was not even given an opportunity. With new coaches and a lack of a CBA I am afraid he will be overlooked. With all new coaches coupled with the CBA not in place I am afraid that alot of young talent will be overlooked.Even if they draft a qb I think they release Pike in favor of a Vet like Voleck.

I know it appeared Moore and Clausen looked really bad but how much of that had to do with poor coaching,a one dimentional offense, and a banged up OL? I wish I had the answer.

From the meetings so far one could assume the franchise is considering a quarterback very seriously and isn't content with clausen.

If that's how you choose to look at it. They've never done what looked to be obvious in te draft, QB looks obvious now, so I doubt we take one. I really think we're pushing for a possible trade.

The other reality is that the players that the local media and national media are most interested in are the quarterbacks.

I suspect we'll get Dareus in and Fairley as well.

we've heard between 7 and 9 players being considered. We've had 5 workouts suggested so far (Bowers, Gabbert, Peterson, Newton, Mallett) with more likely. They're just doing their due diligence, and I wouldn't read too much into the QBs just yet.

Word via The Red Zone that we worked out a small college safety named Ron Parker (link)

The 6-foot, 200-pound All-American selection and South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year ran the 40-yard dash in 4.36, 4.40 and 4.11.

Parker bench pressed 225 pounds 14 times and posted a 4.18 short shuttle, a 6.71 three-cone drill and a 9-7 broad jump.

Per a source, Parker displayed sound range and football skills during the workout.

Pretty sure the 4.11 is a misprint (more likely 4.41). Either that or he's the fastest safety in history :sosp:
