McShay's Mock 4.0 has us taking Dareus...

Carolina Panthers

Record: 2-14 | Top needs: DT, QB, CB, OLB, DE

Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

I would think long and hard about passing on Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert with this pick, but general manager Marty Hurney drafted Jimmy Clausen last year and signed Matt Moore in 2007 so there might not be as much support in Carolina for drafting a quarterback as there's rumored to be. Dareus, CB Patrick Peterson and OLB Von Miller are the cleanest of the elite prospects in the 2011 class and defensive tackle is Carolina's top need so Dareus appears to be the most logical choice with his size, quickness and versatility.

Dareus is the best option at this point. I know Peterson is a popular pick too, not that I would mind him, but we need a, well I don't want to say stud and get the Bull's horn's, but we do need a DT that can rain down havoc. I know we need QB, and CB, but I'd like to think we can get decent FA help in those area's once this CBA mess is over. Cam, Gabbert, Mallett, and Locker just don't seem to fit the situation the Panthers are in. How would another rookie QB fix the mess were in at that position. Did Fox think Delhomme would never age or get hurt? I'am not bashing Jake, just don't know why Fox and Hurney let the QB position get so bad.

Thank's JOAT, but I don't want guy's to think I'am saying those QB's I mentioned are bad, but our situation is, and Jimmy NEVER shoud have been put in that position. Maybe with Rivera at the Helm Jimmy might, I say might show some promise. It could be that we will need A vet. free agent. It was'nt that long ago I thought Cam was a sure #1 pick. After a closer look, I'd be floored if they pick ANY of the QB's in this class. Maybe Moore can get back to his 09 form, that would be sweet too.

It's about time he got it somewhat right lol. I ahve my opinions on who the panthers to take but I'm less critical of mocks. Still, when someone says that we should pick Bowers/Quinn with our top pick... for months on end nonetheless... yeah that pisses me off.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
