There is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the top pick and in reality the Panthers themselves may not know who they are going to take until shortly before draft day. However, the quarterback talk seems to be gaining a lot of momentum and if history is any indication that is the direction they may ultimately go. The opportunity to nab a potential franchise signal caller doesn't come along every year so if Carolina has any doubts about Jimmy Clausen's ability to be that type of player they must grab Missouri's Blaine Gabbert at #1. Gabbert isn't a finished product and will have to adjust to a pro style system but he has all the physical tools and intangibles that you look for. Some feel Gabbert has come out of nowhere and is only being mentioned as a potential top overall pick because there isn't a true stud quarterback prospect in this class. However, Gabbert has always been a very highly regarded pro prospect and the only reason he was flying under the radar is because few expected him to come out early. Auburn's Cam Newton is also in the mix but keep in mind that Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has shied away from guys who make headlines off the field for the wrong reasons. Others under consideration include Alabama DT Marcell Dareus, Clemson DE Da'Quan Bowers and LSU CB Patrick Peterson. Keep in mind that new head coach Ron Rivera is a defensive-minded guy and may push for a [sic] impact talent on that side of the ball, especially up front.

Gabbert is surging up to #1 across a TON of mocks. I've been tracking it from a mock draft compilation JOAT shared. It's crazy.

With Gabbert's recent #1s, he has held the lead in #1 forecasts to us roughly since his Pro Day.

According to the above link, in the month of March, Cam Newton has had 43 mocks place him at #1, Gabbert has had 37 (almost all in the last few weeks), Fairley has had 25 (almost all of them earlier in the month), Bowers has had 36 (ALL of them at the start of the month), and 29 for Dareus who has surged as the other big pick other than Gabbert.

Many of these mocks are updating more than once a month now. heh.

    • damn I wish somebody would sign him. This has been going on for weeks.    I think if the team wanted to sign him we probably would have heard something about interest on our part.    Or any TE. It looks like they have set that room. And we have taken guys two years running, a guy like this would be blocking them. We need to see if they have it or not. And we should see if Tremble is gonna ever do anything.      In general, with the TEs
    • Dude, there aren’t rose colored glasses big enough for you to call this “not a bad draft.” BC was not a good pick. He was taken with the 6th pick in round 3 and he’s been a backup OL. Tremble also wasn’t a win. Another 3rd rounder who’s easily replaced. Only reason either of them started games is because of injuries or a lack of a better starter. Chuba’s got heart but he’s had one solid year behind a solid run blocking unit. Other than that he’s underwhelmed and like we saw with Dowdle and Foreman, it’s not hard to find cheap pickups who perform as well. Horn has been a good starter but honestly that draft had so many solid starters we could have taken. With as many picks as we had, him and Chuba is absolutely a bad draft. We needed OL and BC and Brown was a terrible effort. You clearly didn’t watch the Senior Bowl if you thought Brown had a chance in the NFL. The huddle draft folks wanted Humphrey and Smith and instead we got crap and Mahomes was the winner.
