Clausen not rolling over on being the starter

That is true but first you must speak it and then follow up with actions consistent with those words. So far he has done everything right. If he keeps it up and there is no reason to believe he won't, it should be a matter of when it happens not if it happens. It might not be this year but it should be soon.

The lockout needs to end so we can all stop speculating and start witnessing.

Anyone who thinks that Newton is going to come in and play lights out is going to be disappointed. Other than Roethlisburger, almost all rookies come in and struggle unless the system is a great one.

So I think you will see some flashes of his potential like you did with Freeman his rookie year. But Freeman looked pretty bad other times like his five interception game against us. So I don't know what you intend to witness but I would be shocked if there weren't lots of bumps along the road.

I think he will be better than Freeman was his rookie year. This is the same guy that won the heisman, nat championship, jr nat championship, and finished undefeated in the toughest conference in football.

Problem is that all those awards won't help him pick up defenses in the NFL and make quick decisions. That comes from practice, repetition and countless hours watching film. How you do in college doesn't really relate to how you will do as a pro.

I hope you are right but think that folks that have too high expectations are the ones who are going to sour on him and give up way too early.

yeah, you can't judge Cam on wins and losses......

you judge him the same why you did Clausen.....you judge him on the potential he shows that can be developed and improved.

For me I judged Cam on his physical skills and athleticism which can't be coached. You can train to get stronger or run faster to a point but atleticism you are born with. Next I looked at his desire to win, intangibles, leadership capacity, etc. By all accounts he was off the charts on all of these. Finally I looked at his desire to win and get better no matter what it takes. Did he have the drive to win and has he always settled for being great or was good okay.

When I compare that to Clausen they are very different. Clausen had things handed to him, didn't have to work hard and is largely entitled. He came here expecting people to give him respect without having to earn it. I think he worked fairly hard but the reports he was frequently overwhelmed and shell shocked throughout the season suggests he was often unprepared and didn't put in the work. And then I saw that Clausen was not that athletic or fit and didn't work on changing his mechanics.

So for me they are like night and day.

oh, I agree...they are like night and day to me entering the NFL.

I am just saying I will judge Cam's rookie year just like I did Clausen. I don't care about wins or losses......Cam needs to show glimpses he can be a successful NFL QB down the road. He needs to show many glimpses of the QB he can become if he gets the game reps Clausen did.

totally agree. In other words he will miss some wide open receivers, make some bad reads, and throw too many picks. But I also expect him to throw some great deep balls, run out of trouble and scramble for first downs, and keep the play alive and make some great playground plays (get open and I will throw you the ball). Enough to think that when he gets the playbook and defenses figured out, he will be a franchise guy down the road.

I hope Clausen comes in and wins the job, which would let Cam sit and learn more about the system and pro game. If Clausen does well, trade his ass for a 2nd and put the QB of the future in for his sophomore campaign.

Rather Matt Moore, Clausen is not bringing this team down again.

If Clausen improves in 2011, he will probably improve again in 2012. He would be a cheap backup QB if that is the case--Do not trade him, not yet. Wait until he has played 3 years and trade him--you get better return, your backup is easy on the cap, and it gives you time to look for another backup. What are you going to do, trade a backup making $1 million per year and whose stock is rising so you can sign over-the-hill veteran for $2 million?
