Any UNC fans care to give an analysis on Coples?

Whitney Mercilus will be three times better. Bank.

Mercilus has a lot of limitations to his game and needs a ton of polish. He just goes wild and doesn't show any care for technique.

He lacks NFL DE muscle definition and bulk, Fantastic first step, but is very limited in his lateral movement ability, doesn't excel at playing the edge in the run game and has trouble locating the football when being blocked. Also doesn't have typical DE strength. His numbers (first season as a starter) are widely believed to be a product of the system that Vic Koenning runs (4-2-5, which really plays more like a 4-4/3-4 hybrid placement wise, just with smaller, faster players) Will end up being a 2nd round pick because he doesn't pass the eyeball test.

While for Coples

Shows good first step and burst with good lateral agility, explosive strength. Already posses good NFL technique with multiple pass rush moves, sometimes plays the run high, but his strength allows him to beat the block anyways. Plays the run as well as the pass. There seriously isn't but two negatives with Coples talent and technique wise (elite speed and plays high playing at the DT position, that's it.)

Butch mostly recruited prima donnas who were more concerned with themselves than anything else.

QFT. A high school teammate, top 10 ILB in the country class of '11, went there so I would know.

I saw Coples against Georgia Tech and he did not look like he had it in him to play every down.

let me say this about his heart....his junior year at Carolina, he switched into the DT position to help the team....was such a beast he was considered a top 3 pick. He moved back to DE for his senior season....and his coach was fired right before training camp...that move ripped the heart out of most of the UNC players. I don't blame him for protecting himself if that's what he did.

However, last summer he was rated by far the best Defensive prospect. He was gameplanned around and double teamed while the team was in chaos with an interim coach and a lameduck staff.

I'm not saying he won't be a bust, but he is seriously worth a look.

done this before will do this again

Talent wise he is a top 10 pick. He played both DE and DL at UNC. Very versatile. Good at getting to the qb at BOTH positions.

My main concern is he didn't produce this year against average to great teams consistently. Sure he padded his stats with some good games against some no name schools, but I'm wary that against the elite talent he won't produce.

Has the potential to be a great player, very worried about his drive though. I don't think your first and early round picks should be home run swings unless you need to dramatically change your organization (ie Cam), but solid picks and then swing for the fences in the later rounds.

I'd rather take a risk on Brockers at DT, because we have one awesome DE and another young one that could develop. We have nothing at DT.

Fug the eye ball test, unlike Couples who has little drive and takes plays off, Mercilus has a drive to continue to improve. Couples padded his stats against weak opponents this year while Mercilus was unblock able the whole season in the Big 10. Mercilus carried that Illini defense and showed great leadership skills and simply doesn't take plays off. His motor is always running.

AS a Tar Heel fan, I'm not sold on Coples. Like most have said he showed no heart this year. That being said I'm not going to flip out if we draft him either. Maybe all the off field problems at UNC killed his motivation. I know a few players had problems with the staff last year. If drafted I hope high motor players like Cam, Smitty, and Beason can keep him motivated. That and all the money.
